Argumentative Essay: Kamali: English 10

Directions: Write a _________ ____________ argumentative essay, following the outline given.
You may choose any topic so long as it is not an expression of _____________ ____________,
it is _______________, and it is ________________ for school. Last year in Freshman English
you wrote an essay just like this- those topics are off the table. An argumentative claim (thesis)
must seek to convince an audience to do or believe (or to stop doing or believing) something. A
key word in ensuring that your claim is an argumentative one instead of just a statement of
opinion is the word ____________. Once you have a topic approved, it will be yours; no one
else can have the same topic.
Research and Citations: For this essay you must have at least ________ sources. Use the SIRS
database on the ____________ ___________. If you access this at home, you have the password
in your _____________.
You should also check out this website to help you find a topic:

UNRELIABLE sources that cloud the internet, including (but not limited to) wikipedia,
about.com, yahoo.answers, individual blog sites, etc. are not acceptable for this assignment.
You must seek out reputable news organizations instead.
You will also be required to include a Works Cited page. Feel free to use easybib.com.

Paragraph 1: Introduction with Claim:

Hook (2-3 sentences)
Not a question, not a quote, not imaginebegin by describing a specific scene that is
relevant to your topic. Include sensory details (sight, smell, hear, touch, taste).

Bridge (1-2 sentences)

Transition from your imagery above into your claim. This is just a sentence or two to
smoothly get to your topic.

Claim (1 sentence thesis)

Opposing viewpoint first, then people (individuals, students etc) should or should not +
your topic.

Example: Walking through the hallways, there is a blur of khaki and white. Sure, there is the
expected mix height, size and hair, but the monochromatic wave of this passing period sounds
quiet and uninspired.(hook-used sight and sound). With over 1,000 students in school uniform,
there is little room to be decked out in gold tights and green wigs for school spirit; there is no
exception for a tie-dye t-shirt made at home, and Giants apparel is off limits even if they did just
win the World Series. (bridge) Even though uniforms can eliminate inappropriate outfits
(opposing viewpoint), students should be given the freedom to choose their own apparel for
reasons of comfort and expression. (thesis)

Paragraph 5: Concluding Paragraph

After careful consideration of ________________________________________ , (reason 1)
_____________________________ (reason 2)and __________________________(reason3)
one can conclude that__________________________________________________. (claim)

Revisit your original hook image:

Example: After careful consideration of the benefits of comfort and self expression, one can
conclude that school uniforms are not the answer to bullying and inappropriate clothing.
Uniforms will not change the climate of the school in a positive way because there should always
be room for personal expression and personal preference. That blur of khaki and white should
instead be dappled with Sharks jerseys, Cal Poly sweatshirts and even and even an occasion
sequin dress. (back to hook image)
