HEALTH TEACHINGS

Primary:
Intstruct the patient to have a sufficient rest.
Instruct the patient not to overexert and put a strain on the lower abdominal region
while coughing.
Encourage frequent position changes early in the postoperative period to stimulate
circulation.
Instruct the patient to perform hand washing before and after touching the wound.
Assist patient to return to normal dietary intake gradually at a pace set by patient
(liquids rst, then soft foods, such as gelatin, junket, custard, milk, and creamed
soups, are added gradually, then solid food).
Secondary:
Orient the patients family about the patients condition and necessary
information/treatment and recovery process.
Instruct the family to remain at patients side to give physical support and
encouragement.
Teach significant others to assisst the patient always in a comfortable position.
Instruct significant others to wash hands before and after contact with patient.
Intruct the family to maintain the environment of the patient safe and clean at all
times.
Tertiary:
Intruct patient and family to report any unusialities.
Intruct the patient to take the medications prescribed by the physician.
Encourange patient to consult with a dietitian to plan appealing, high-protein meals
that provide sufcient ber, and calories.
Instruct patient to take multivitamins, iron, and vitamin C supplements
postoperatively if prescribed.
