CTL 7071 Teaching & Learning Portfolio Entry #4/Art Education

Self-Assessing your Clay Relief Tile

Remembering:

What was your

intention or big idea
for this artwork, and
how did you realize
it?

My intention or big idea for this artwork was

identity/inclusion. I realized that my artwork
reflected identity/inclusion because of the symbols
that I used in my artwork. I realized that my artwork
was about identity because I used tools to imprint
OM letters and a symbol. The OM symbol
represented my religion which is apart of my
identity. Also, I created a heart because this
represented that my identity is important to me. I
realized that it is important to respect students
individual identities in a classroom and it is
important to include all students in the classroom.
Prior to creating a clay relief tile I thought about
making my big idea equity because this is a huge
belief that I had as a future educator. However, after
experimenting, using techniques and using tools I
decided to change my big idea to
identity/inclusion. This is an important big idea
because every student has their own identity in the
classroom which makes them unique and students
should feel a sense of belonging regardless of who
they are or where their from. Big ideas foster an
inquiry based approach because it gives students an
opportunity to state their ideas and interests about
a certain topic.

Understanding:
What did you learn
about working with
clay (or about artmaking?)

Applying:
What skills or
knowledge did you
apply in creating this
artwork?

I learned that it is important to think about an idea

before creating an object with clay. The reason that
this is important is because it prepares an individual
to consider what to do before sculpting the clay. I
learned throughout the process that if I made a
mistake it was extremely easy to fix because I was
able to roll the clay back into a ball and flatten it
with a rolling pin. Afterwards, the clay was back to
its previous state and I was able to sculpt, imprint
or create a three dimensional object with the clay.
Thats the reason why I did not have to be perfect
and I was able to make mistakes throughout the
process of working with clay. Also, I learned that
3dimensional objects stick onto the clay piece when
I used water and dig the surface. I did not realize
that I needed to dig the surface and use water in
order to stick my 3Dimensional object on the clay
piece at first. I realized this after Hilary mentioned it
in class and I decided to try it out.
Skills or knowledge that I applied in order to create
this artwork was imprinting by placing the letters
OM onto the clay. Secondly, I created three
dimensional objects and used the scratch and water
technique in order to stick it to the surface. This
worked very well because all of my 3Dimensional
objects stayed in place. I gained this knowledge
prior to using the clay. Thirdly, I constructed my
entire artwork by using a variety of different steps. I
followed the three skills of imprinting, 3Dimensional
and constructing. When I received the clay it was in
a square so I decided to press it onto the table
several times in order to make it flat. Afterwards, I
used my hand in order to roll the clay into a huge
ball, and I flattened the clay by using a rolling pin
tool. I found that the tools provided in class were
very helpful throughout the process. Next, I used a
pointy wooden tool that allowed me to cut the clay
into a square shape. I realized that I didnt want a
square shape so I decided to use the tool in order to
cut out a circle in the clay. Afterwards, I used the
pieces that I cut out in order to create three
dimensional objects by rolling objects into a ball. I
imprinted letters and I used the pointy wooden tool
in order to carve out visuals in my clay.

Analyzing:
What stages of the
creative process (as
detailed in the MOEs
Arts document) did
you go through in
making this?

While I created my artwork using clay I went

through most of the stages of the creative process.
Firstly, I went through the Challenging/Inspiring
stage because I made a choice about focusing on
the big idea identity/inclusion. I determined that
my goal was to construct an artwork that
represented my own identity. Secondly, I went
through the Imagining/Generating stage because I
brainstormed ideas about identity prior to working
with clay. Also, I thought about possible objects that
I could create which represented my identity.
Thirdly, I went through the Planning/Focusing stage
because I thought about the tools that I wanted to
use in order to create my clay artwork. I gathered
tools and materials such as clay, rolling pin, letters,
wooden stick, and water. I thought about strategies
and elements that I wanted to incorporate to make
the process easier. For instance, I used strategies
such as scratching the surface and using water.
Also, using my fingers in order roll the clay and
create three dimensional objects. Fourthly, I went
through the Exploring/Experimenting stage
because I explored different techniques such as
using my hands in order to create three dimensional
objects with the clay. Also, using different tools in
order to cut out, press and scratch the clay. I used
different tools in order to create imprints and
designs in my clay artwork. I incorporated the
elements of art by using lines within my letters and I
used shape because I created a heart. Also, I used
space by creating three dimensional objects and
texture by creating a smooth texture. I was inspired
to use techniques as Hilary discussed them during
class and I seen other individuals using them as
well. Fifthly, I went through the Producing
Preliminary work stage by making meaning and
connections to my artwork. Lastly, I went through
the Revising/Refining stage because I added final
details to my artwork. Also, I had a discussion with
other individuals in my group. I made revisions by
adding elements such as extra shapes and building
on strengths that I already included.

Evaluating:
How successful was
your work in
communicating your
big idea? Is there
anything you would
change about it?

Creating:
This work shows my
growth as an artist
by:

I believe that I successfully communicated my big

idea. I incorporated a range of visuals on my clay
artwork that demonstrated my identity which was
my big idea. I realized that individuals may not
understand that my artwork represents
identity/inclusion unless they are familiar with the
religious symbols that I used in my artwork. I could
communicate my big idea by adding more pictures
on my clay artwork to represent identity next time.
For instance, including different religious symbols
and other aspects of my identity. Perhaps, next time
I can include a three dimensional image on my clay
artwork of children holding hands in order to
represent identity/inclusion. In order to demonstrate
that everyone should be included regardless of their
identity. Something else that I would change is the
design of my clay artwork. I would do this by adding
more imprints and elements. Overall, I want to add
more images to represent my identity.
This work shows my growth as an artist because I
never had the opportunity to work with clay and
develop techniques. Throughout the process I used
different tools and techniques for the very first time.
If I had an opportunity to explore with tools and
techniques prior to creating a clay artwork I feel as
if I would have done a better job. I feel as if I was
experimenting because I never worked with clay
before or used these tools/techniques before. I was
very proud that I was able to use imprints, three
dimensional and constructing in my artwork. Also, I
am very proud that my artwork represents identity
which was my big idea. Lastly, this artwork shows
my growth as an artist because I went through
different stages of the creative process. Also, I used
different elements of art in my clay artwork.
