Overview
With the application of spread spectrum and orthogonal coding technologies, the
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mobile communications technology makes
more mobile terminals able to share radio spectrum resources and fully enjoy the
network advantages of high capacity, high spectrum efficiency, crystal-clear voice
and low power consumption.

On the basis of CDMA international specifications like TIA/EIA, ZTE has

successfully developed CDMA2000 1x/EV-DO Packet Data Switching System
(ZXPDSS). ZTE ZXPDSS is the core entity to enable the packet data switching at
the cdma2000 1X stage. It allows cdma2000 1X/EV-DO mobile subscriber to have
radio packet data access to Internet/Intranet and provides the packet data access
service of Simple IP and Mobile IP.

10

In the design of the ZXPDSS (V3.0) cdma2000 1X/EV-DO Packet Data Switching
System, requirements for high reliability, high availability and data consistency have
been taken into consideration. Furthermore, the latest network processor technology
adopted has significantly improved the processing capability of the data stream.
Moreover, ZXPDSS provides GUI (Graphic User Interface) operation, maintenance
and administration functions, personalized packet service, flexible charging policy
and customized solution to meet customers requirements and network features.

Station (MS)

MS is the device that can be directly operated by trunking subscriber. For cdma2000
packet data service, the MS refers to handset mobile station, vehicle mounted
station, fixed station, laptop and PC with the cdma2000 packet data service
capability.
Base Station Subsystem (BSS)

10

The BSS and PCF constitute the Radio Access Network (RAN), fulfilling access to
various services such as plain old telephone service (POTS) and data service.
PCF is involved in the entire control process of packet data calls, such as the
establishment of a communication link during origination of a packet data call and
the release of the communication link during release or hard handoff of a packet data
call.

15

20

Mobile Switching Subsystem (MSS)

The MSS consists of Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Home Location Register
(HLR), Visitor Location Register (VLR) and Authentication Center (AUC), which
provides Circuit Switched (CS) voice call control and provisioning of radio service
channel for packet service and is also the connection device for interconnection
between trunking service network and other public network over plain old telephone
service.
Packet Data Switching Subsystem (PDSS)

25

The PDSS consists of PDSN, AAA, AN-AAA and HA, which is the access gateway
between the radio network and packet data network and provides high-rate packet
data service for subscribers.
To support short message service, packet dispatching service, location service and
Intelligent Network (IN) service, the system can be added with short message
subsystem, dispatching service subsystem, mobile location subsystem and IN
subsystem.

1.3

Functional Entities
ZTE ZXPDSS is the core entity to enable the packet data switching at the cdma2000
1X stage. It allows cdma2000 1X/EV-DO mobile subscriber to have radio packet
data access to Internet/Intranet and provides the packet data access service of Simple
IP and Mobile IP.

The functions of core entities are described below.

1.3.1

PDSN
PDSN, serving as the access gateway of radio packet data between radio network
and packet data network, provides Simple IP and Mobile IP access to enable
cdma2000 mobile stations to access Internet or Intranet.

10

Maintain and manage R-P session and PPP session and realize the access
control and mobility management over radio subscribers
Act as AAA client to complete AAA function
For Simple IP service, act as network access server to allocate IP addresses
for subscribers (AAA can also be required to allocate IP addressed for
subscribers)

15

For Mobile IP service, act as Foreign Agent (FA) to provide mobile station
with IP care-of-address and IP routing service
Support mobile data VPN, play the role of L2TP Access Concentrator (LAC)
and provide packet transmission bearer for the remote access of enterprise
user to internal LNS of enterprise

20

Support postpaid and prepaid access, monitor the used quota of prepaid user
and update the user quota online and retrieve resources
Support data monitoring, reporting the relevant activities of controlled
subscriber in real-time manner and browsing information

25

Support routing function ,such as OSPF, RIP, and BGP4.

For 1X subscribers, PDSN provides an access rate of up to 153.6kbps. For EV-DO
subscribers, PDSN provides an access rate of up to 2Mbps.

1.3.2

HA
The HA is a router in the MS home network for maintaining the current location
information of the MS and establishing the correspondence between the MSs IP
address and the MSs care-of-address. When the MS leaves the registration network,
it needs to register to the HA. After it receives the packets destined to the MS, the
HA forwards them to the care-of-address of the MS through the tunnel between HA
and FA. The care-of-address then decapsulates the packets and sends them to the
MS, hence completing the mobile IP function.

30

35

HA is not needed for Simple IP but needed for Mobile IP services.

1.3.3
40

AAA
AAA adopts the RADIUS server mode at present. It authenticates the script file
information of the subscribers, authorizes data services, and completes accounting
function. Meanwhile, AAA implements account-opening management of data
services for subscribers.

ZTE Confidential Proprietary

Product Descriptionl of ZXPDSS(V3.0)

Besides supporting 1X and EV-DO subscribers, ZXPDSS AAA also supports AAA
function of WLAN subscriber to facilitate unified deployment and management of
WLAN+1X service. It also supports featured functions such as packet prepayment,
multi-ISP access, data monitoring, WAP gateway agent, static IP address binding
and DNS dynamic update.

1.3.4

AN-AAA
AN-AAA, as the AN authentication server, implements the access authentication
function at the AN-Level and fulfills the identity validity check and authorization
function of EV-DO subscriber.

10

15

20

Different from cdma 2000 1X network, the standard cdma2000 EV-DO network
does not have the CS core network device, namely, the MSS. The validity of
subscriber terminal identity is checked by AN-AAA.
In order to access the service without changing UIM card in dual-mode
terminal(cdma 1x and EV-DO), China Unicom, Qualcomm, ZTE and Samsung
jointly work out the dual-mode authentication scheme based on the CAVE
algorithm. It introduces CS interface between AN-AAA and HLR and is adopted as
international standard by 3GPP2. ZTE AN-AAA supports the dual-mode
authentication of HRPD and CAVE algorithm.
ZXPDSS AN-AAA supports separate or integrated configuration with ZXPDSS
AAA.

SERVICES AND FUNCTIONS

3.1

System Service Capabilities

ZXPDSS supports Simple IP access and Mobile IP access, providing two kinds of
universal radio packet data access service:
Access to the local and public IP networks

Subscribers can access public IP resources through ZXPDSS and use the services
and resources provided by Internet.
Access to the private (dedicated) IP networks
The access function of private IP network is called data Virtual Private Network
(VPN) service function. With the access capability of ZXPDSS, IP tunnel
technology and IP security technology, enterprise users can access the private IP
network of the enterprise remotely and use the internal server of the enterprise, like
directly connecting the server of the enterprise. Subscribers can use services and
resources provided by the server securely and reliably, composing the data VPN of
the enterprise. The data VPN share network resources are independent of each other
in work.

10

15

3.2

System Functions
The ZXPDSS (V3.0) cdma2000 1X Packet Data Switching System contains the
following functions:

20

25

1. Supporting Simple IP and Mobile IP access modes

Simple IP
Simple IP is similar to the network access through dialing modem on the fixed
telephone. The IP address assigned for MS each time is dynamic and changeable.
Simple IP can only implement the data communication with the MS as the calling
party. Also, the data communications will be interrupted for inter-PDSN handoff
and will not be resumed until the call is initiated again.
Mobile IP

30

Mobile IP is the solution based on the RFC2002 protocol for providing mobile
functions over the worldwide Internet. It has good scalability, high reliability and
security. In addition, it keeps normal communications when MS switches PPP links
(inter-PDSN).
Mobile IP provides an IP routing mechanism, which makes it possible for the MS to
access any IP public or private network with a permanent IP address. Thus mobile
IP implements data communications with MS serving as the called party.

35

2. Supporting the access of 1X subscriber and EV-DO subscriber

Access of 1X subscriber
It supports the access of cdma2000 1X subscriber and provides the 1X subscriber
with the radio data service capability at a rate of up to 153.6kbps.
Access of EV-DO subscriber

40

It supports the access of cdma2000 EV-DO subscriber and provides the EV-DO
subscriber with the radio data service capability at a rate of up to 2Mbps.

3. Supporting mobile data VPN

Data VPN service uses the access capability of the system, bearer capability and IP
tunnel technology of packet network and IP security technology to provide packet
subscriber with the capability of remote access to the internal server of enterprise.
The subscribers seem to be directly connected to the server to access various data
services which constitute data VPN of the enterprise. The data VPNs can share
network resources and are independent of each other in work.

As shown in Fig. 2, the VPN access scheme of L2TP is described below:

1)

15

20

25

PDSN implements the LAC function. LNS is the access server placed in the
enterprise.
2) PPP session is terminated at MS and LNS. After the PPP packet is sent to LAC
from MS, the LAC will send it to LNS through L2TP tunnel.
3) Operator AAA makes the first authentication for the subscriber, judges the
subscribers right to access the private network of the enterprise, obtains the LNS
related information and returns it to PDSN/LAN. The enterprise AAA is
responsible for the second authentication and IP address allocation.
4. Supporting multiple ISPs to access the system
When deploying the packet data service, operator can introduce multiple ISPs for
cooperation besides providing subscribers with public IP network resource.
Different subscribers can access different ISPs. Thus the services provided for
subscribers are diversified and the industry chain of operator is expanded.
ZXPDSS provides multi-ISP access support by providing the ISP selection
information mode, with the network structure shown in Fig. 3.

3)

ISP network

It is the network that provides ISP service, and is provided by ISP. Multiple-ISP
networks can access the system.
15

20

The ISP has access to the system in the same way as to data VPN. PDSN
implements the LAC function and ISP is responsible for providing LNS. According
to the ISP information in the subscription information, the system uses the L2TP
mode to make the subscriber access the LNS of the corresponding ISP. Where, the
home location AAA of operator implements the access authentication to subscriber
and the AAA of ISP is responsible for the second authentication of subscriber.
The ZXPDSS system supports the access of multiple ISPs and provides three ISP
access schemes for selection:

subscriber
Making ISP judgment and authorization according to the Domain of subscriber
Making ISP identification and authentication according to the Realm domain
information in the NAI accessed by subscriber
Operator AAA has the subscribers information and executes authentication.
Operator AAA does not have the subscribers information. The AAA Server
of ISP makes authentication and checks the validity of subscriber.

30

5. Supporting packet data prepaid and postpaid subscribers

The packet prepaid function makes real-time accounting for the packet data service
of mobile subscribers. It controls the data service of subscribers according to the
actual account balance of subscribers to ensure the benefits of operator. The prepaid

function is mainly implemented by the Prepaid Server (PPS). The prepaid client
(PPC) delivers the prepaid data service to mobile subscribers according to the
control of PPS.
The packet prepaid functional entities include:
AAA Server: Implement the authentication, authorization and accounting
functions of mobile subscribers as well as the prepaid function and control
authorization of packet prepaid subscriber.

PPS: Implement the control over the data service of prepaid subscriber.
PPC: Realize the data service of prepaid subscriber according to the control
policy of PPS. It refers to PDSN and HA in the CDMA network. Where,
the PPC of Simple IP subscriber is called PDSN and the PPC of Mobile IP
subscriber is called HA or PDSN.
