(Part 22) History of the Tyendinaga Mohawks (continued) Christ Church “Her Majesty's Mohawk Chapel": Royal gifts and honors were bestowed upon the Chapel of the Mohawks because of their ancestor's active military service in the interests of the British Crown. It is one of two Chapel Royals that exist outside of Britain, In 1798, King George Ill presented to the chapel a royal coat of arms, bell, and triptych written in the Mohawk language. The orginal coat of afms was destroyed but later replaced in the early 1900's by King George V. In 1842, Queen Victoria presented a Bible which is still on display in the church today. Octosen 2016 THe MoonuGHTER Politios: ‘The Clan Mothers were prominent authoritative figures in the original Mohawk political system. The Clan Mothers are women chosen by the band members on the basis of their inteligence and other charismatic qualities. Their main responsibility was to appoint a Chief and Council to act as. representatives of the Reserve, These appointed members would continue to serve so long as the Clan Mothers. considered them worthy of this position - in some cases, the rest of their lives. If they felt the Chief could no longer govem the reserve effectively, he would be immediately replaced by ‘another. ‘i 1870, the traditional way of appointing chiefs was ended with the election of Sampson Green, Since then, life-time Chiefs have become nonexistent because elections are held every two years. The reserve voling system is done the same ‘35 any municipality. Native people are nominated to hold the position of either Chief or Councilor and after two weeks of campaigning, they are voted on by secret ballat to decide the candidate. ‘There are two political parties on the reserve: the Mohawk People's Party and the Progressive Party. Voting is done by those who are 21 and over and who reside on the reserve. Chief and Council meet every month to discuss and resolve any problems that may have atisen in regards to the Reserve. ‘The Reserve Today; ‘Tyendinaga Reserve is located about six miles east of Belleville and 35 miles west of Kingston, The anginal 92,000 ‘acre land grant has been reduced to a mere 17,000 acres. ‘This substantia land loss can be attributed to a series of land surrenders that began in the 1630's and have continued down to this century. The reserve is criss-crossed by 45 miles of roads, the main ones being the Ridge, York, and Slash, ‘Tyendinaga is about three miles wide and seven miles long, ‘The Mohawk Administration Office was builtin the early 1950's. Until 1974, the building served as Quinte Mohawk School. From thera, it became housing for several offices in which the business and administrative affairs of the reserve ‘ate managed. Teachers, custodians, day care workers and road crew all became employed thraugh the Band Office. The office itself employs 4 staff which includes Band Manager, Land Researcher, Social Counselor, Health and Welfare ‘Administrator and an Economic Development Officer. ‘Tyendinaga has their police force which also works out of the Band Office. As | reminisce about the days of my youth in Catatonk, recalling wonderful memories, it came to me that everyane and everything has a past. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes happy, sometimes sad. | wondered about this settiement’s past. What was it like before my time? My research produced some very Interesting facts. This little berg once had a hotel, a dance hall, and a saloon. The hotel was located in the old section of the building now housing Hollenbeck’s Mill, the saloon was a building In front of the mill, on Route 96, where a store used to. stand and was known as the toughest place around. Local young people ware mostly not allowed to go near that part of the settlement after dark. Three VanDuzer brothers — Jerry, Martin and Hank - who lived out past the mill in the home last accupied by the Truman Anderson family, built a water-operated sawmill located behind the mill. They were also emplayed as bouncers for the saloon. Dances were also held on the second floor of a bullding just south of the store. When the floor became too weak for the crowd, the neighbors got together and built the community hall in 1922. The conerete blocks for the building were manufactured by a local farmer, Fred Kyle, whose farm was located where the Halstead family now resides. He also supplied milk for many of the neighbors, This was non-pasteurized milk, which was common in days gone by, but would be frowned on today, There were two ather dance halls in the area. One on Campbell Hill, known as ‘Arbies Rock’ and the other in the first house just north of the Catatank Cemetery, at the time owned by Ed Storm. The upstairs was a large hall and music was provided by a local band with Flayd Richards as its leader. Catatonk also had a Grist Mill, a Blacksmith Shop, located in the side yard af the home | grew up in, and I never knew it until naw. A Tannery, a Post Office, a Milk Station, 3 Rallroad Station - there were six trains a day going through the settlement, a pumping station for Standard Gil in the building now housing the County Garage, and two one-room schaol houses. The first schoo! house stood where Hills Repair Shop is located, but burned in 1882, and a new one was built just up the road, which is now a residence. Octoser 201% ‘THE MooNUGHTER |. ___. He had been a farmer until that time, When he bought the mill, it had the only electricity in the area using its own water-powered generator. In 1935 he built the new addition. There was a railroad siding at the mill for delivery of cow feed and other agriculture supplies. Catatonk even has a criminal history. Someone made counterfeit half dallars in the field where Pebble Hill Mobile Park is now located. Later a local farmer working the field dragged out an old iron kettle full of those coins. In later years a farmer across fram the Owego Heights Park also found several of the coins while dismantling a bullding on his property. Another interesting fact | learned is that Route 96 in Catatonk was once a toll road. Farmers not wanting to keep paying the toll built a road next to the hill parallel to Route 96, from Catatonk Hill Road to GlenMary Drive, which for years was called “The Shunpike Road’ and later just ‘The Back Road.” Now it has the interesting name of ‘Swamp Road,’ The first telephone system was built and maintained by local farmers. The wires were strung on fence posts, and powered by wet batteries made of bottles. + That mode Bud the first dog to cross ‘the United States by car. At the ‘time, the outomobile was still in its infancy, meaning that driving wes neither safe nar fun. It was part of a triangle of strongpoints setup by the Japanese defenders designed to delay and damage the attacking American forces. The struggle for Sugar Loaf lasted 10 days; it was fought under the worst possible conditions - a driving rain that never seemed to slacken, day or night. Newsweek called Sugar Loaf “'the mast critical local battle of the war."" Time described a company of Marines - 270 men - assaulting the hill. They failed; fewer than 30 returned, Fletcher Pratt, the military historian, wrote that the battle was unmatched in the Pacific war for "closeness and desperation.” Casualties were almost unbelievable. In the 22nd and 29th Marine regiments, two out of every three men fell, The struggle for the dominance of Sugar Loaf was probably the costliest engagement in the history of the Marine Corps. But by early evening on May 18, as night thickened aver the embattled armies, the 29th Marines had taken Sugar Loaf, this time for keeps. When Sugar Loaf was finally secured on May 18, it had cost 2,600 Marine and about 2,500 Japanese dead, SUGAR LOAF HILL (Part 5) The Killing Ground on Okinawa, Japan (1945) [Printed with permission from the author, wha wishes ta remain anonymous) More shots were followad by shouts. Milly replied, "| know a story | can tell about twin sisters, They really laved each other, but had opposite personalities. Maria was always the good one, but Melissa ran with bad company...drinking too much and doing drugs. One evening while Melissa was out to a bar with har companions, Maria walked in and went right to the back booth where “Mel” and her friends were hanging out. Melissa looked up at Maria. “What are you doing here?” she asked scomfully, One of Met's friends noticed Maria and asked Melissa if something was wrong with Maria (she looked sick). Maria instructed Melissa to go home ~ that if Mel ever wanted to be close as sisters should be, Mel had better stop her foolish ways, because they were hurting Mel and keeping them apart. Melissa was annoyed and snapped "What do you know, you're just @ goody-two-shoes, and don’t be telling me what to do!” Maria locked directly into Melissa’s eyes and said, "Goodbye and | love you,” As Maria turned to leave, Mel glanced at the clock. Turning to her friends she said, “It’s almost ten o'clock. | guess I'll head home. Miss Maria will probably be waiting to give me a good night lecture.” When Mel arrived home, her parents were at the door with tear-stained faces. We've been waiting for you, Mel, We have bad news. Maria was out walking tonight and was killed by a drunk driver, It happened at about 8:20. Millie told Joan that after Maria died, Melissa completely changed her lifestyle. She gave up drinking and drugs and straightened herself out. She wanted Maria to be proud of her. “So you see, loan,” Millie said sadly, “Good won out ‘over evil, but at a terrible price.” Joan studied Millie: with a dawning of recognition. “That's a true story, isn’tit..and you're Melissa.” +. Newark Valley's one and only article on the story ends with a bit of self-deprecation, but includes the fact that Wilcox was not the only one who saw strange objects in the sky, UFO LANDING IN NEWARK VALLEY. NY (part 6) April 1966 In the village there was hardly any other topic of conversation for days. There were believers and unbelievers, a surprising number of the former. As the story spread It inevitably grew. There were stories that others had seen similar objects in the past in this area, but were too awed to tell about it. This is likely to be the last visit of Martians to Tioga County we fear, and the Herald will probably never get another chance to redeem itself as.a news media. Exactly what papers carried the story outside of Tioga and Broome Counties has yet to be determined. Radio and television accounts, likewise, have not been documented. The following year, another journalist paid Wilcox a visit. His reaction was not as accommodating. Mr. Wilcox did not seem particularly happy to see a reporter show up on his farm, Two staries did appear in the Binghamton papers abcut this time. They were the typical follow-up stories for an event of this magnitude. Stout a Recently | was working on my own lttie survey, sinoe | was hearing $0 many talking about it, and out of about 25 people, | did't ind anyone who knows who thay are going to vote for in November for our next president. Of course | won't repeat some of the comments from the political ads being shoved down our throat. Everyone keeps pointing out the same fact; none of the candidates are telling us what they stand for or now thay feel on the issues: they are toa busy attacking each other. They are not the only politicians doing that, but it stil eaves the voler frustrated as to who they want in the position. Currently most of the people | talked with don’t trust or like the Democrat and Republican candidates, and don't really know any of the others running. It has newer been too clear to me why the others running are never inckided in any debates, | do ;now some who just vole thelr party but even those folks are feeling shaky this year. Because of the indecisiveness ona wonders if voter tumout will ne down, Oo our votes really count anyway? | hear a lot of young people ask that question and | have to be honest... am not sure. It's all confusing and kind of scary; | mean how did we get this point? If I don't vote it feels like taxation without representation, but do thay really count in the federal elections? Do the parties decide more than the common man? Many are saying we need to take back our government. Its sad that in the last few elections many said they voted far, in heir opinion, the lesser of two evils. | remember making decisions and voting but can't remember the last one | was jeally crazy about; and even thaugh | am registared | don't just vole my party, | try to laarn about them and make a decision hat way, but even now; how do we know what to believe and not believe? Being inundated with information, ike on the internet, is good and bad; it's hard to know what the truth is do believe we need fo limit how long our congress people are serving, and allow no further benefits when their term is up. How many jabs do the ordinary people walk away from, nol retire, or get laid off - and keep the benefits? Another issue is: the politicians (local, stata, federal) are elecied by the public, supposedly, so why do | observe them, 2ver al the local level ignoring their public. We are the people they promised to serve, so our ideas and opinions should be istened to and taken into consideration, but they're not. Once someone takes an office, does the power go to their haad? | did not write this for any responses from anyone; you vote for who you want and | wil figure aut who | am wating for. Virtually all living organisms can digest sugar easily. So why isn’t sugar prone to the same infestation as flour or other kitchen staples? Because sugar has an extremely low moisture content — it dehydrates microorganisms that might cause mold, Water molecules diffuse or migrate out of the microorganism at a faster rate than they diffuse into it. Eventually, the microorganism dies due toa lack of moisture within it. Sugar’s low moisture level impedes chemical changes that could cause spoilage. However, if sugar is dissolved in water, the more likely it is that yeasts and molds will thrive in it. Even exposure to high humidity for a few days will allow sugar to absorb enough moisture to promote spoilage and mold. Storing sugar in an airtight container will retard the absorption of moisture even in humid conditions. If stored in an atmosphere unaffected by swings in temperature and humidity, sugar has an unlimited shelf life.
