ASSIGNMENT 1 : BWM12603

1. (a) Give brief explanation on:

(i) Physical quantities,
(ii) Dimension of physical quantities and
(iii) Inertial reference frame.
(b) Write the dimension and the SI units of the following quantities:
(i) Angular velocity,
(ii) Moment of force or torque,
(iii) Modulus of elasticity which is defined as (stress)/(strain).
(c) Picul is local old unit of weights. 1 Picul = 100 gins, 1 gins =100 tahil, 1
tahil = 10 chees and 1 chee = 10 hoons. The weight of 1 hoon corresponds to
a mass of 0.3779 g. A pack of rubber has weight 28.9 Piculs. What is the
mass of the rubber in kilograms?
2. (a) A swimmer is capable of swimming 1.00 m/s in still water. (i) If he aims
his body directly across a 75 m- wide river whose current is 0.80 m/s, how far
down stream (from a point opposite his starting point) will he land? (ii) How
long will take his to reach the other side?
(b) Find the magnitude and the direction of the resultant force of the given
set of forces as shown in Figure 2(b).

(c) Figure (2) (c) shows a traction for hanging M2. Assuming the pulleys are
weightless and smooth determine: (i) the horizontal pull, P on M 2. (ii) the
resultant force exerted by the system on M2.
Q3 (a) A plank AB, shown in Figure 3 (a) weighs 100 N. Find the least force F
required to prevent the
plank overturning.
(b) A uniform rod as shown in Figure 3 (b) with weight and length 100 N and L m
respectively, rests
on smooth support at B and hinged at A. The support at B exerts a force 50
N. Find distance AB.

Q4

A car of mass 2000 kg pulls a caravan of mass 400 kg. The resistance to
motion of the car is 1000 N and the resistance to motion of the caravan is
100 N. Find the acceleration of the car and the caravan at the instant when
their speed is 40 kmh-1 with the power output of the engine equal to 100 kW.
Find also the tension in the coupling between the car and the caravan at this
instant.

Q5 (a) A stationary object is released from A, down to the point at B through a rough
surface as shown in Figure 5 (a). If it arrives at B with a speed of 5 m/s, find the
percentage loss in initial total mechanical energy of the object due to friction.

(b) A car of mass of 800 kg starts to accelerate from rest at constant rate. It
reaches a speed of 12 m/s in 10 s. Determine:
(i) The work done on the car in this time interval.
(ii) The average power of the cars engine.

Q6 (a) Four particles of mass 3, 2, 5 and 1 kg are at the points A, B, C, D whose

position vectors are
2i j, 3i + 5j, -2i j, I 3j. Find:
(i) The position vector of the center of mass of the particle.
(ii) The position vector of the centroid of the points A, B, C, D.
(b) Find the position of the center of gravity of each uniform lamina as shown in
figure 6.
