INVISIBLE CITIES

ARMILLA 2

ABOUT ARMILLA 2

Many years ago a natural disaster struck the city of Armilla, it cleared everything
that makes a city, a city. Humans left and all that remained was plumbing, doors
and windows.
Despite the humans abandoning Armilla, new inhabitants came. From the rain,
plants began to grow - on their own and up the pipes. The baths, sinks, the pools
that were once there began to collect water and over flow into the plumbing
below like fountains. Lilies grew, frogs came and soon after their tadpoles. Birds
like herons would fly over and drop their fish into the pools and baths where they
began to breed attracting more birds, flamingos flocked to the pools and lakes,
(the lakes that formed when it rained). Foxes took shelter in the sewage pipes
with their off spring. Rats also scavenged through whatever remained which was
nothing really, they live in the minutest bits of brickwork left from a house.
Armilla isnt a desert, it has soil/clay for land. I imagine it to be like the settings in
Michael Jacksons Earth Song music video, nothing except trees and little
wreckage. The toilets and baths I imagine to be like the ones on the Titanic this
present day but not as rotten.

BASIC THUMBNAILS

Bottom thumbnail is of sewer pipes.

The new idea for Armilla is a forest of
pipes, pipes that rise and intersect to
look like trees and giant sewer pipes
that emerge from the ground where
time, erosion and an earthquake has
removed the ground that once hid it.
On the end of the branches of these
trees are porcelain baths, toilets, sinks
etc like late fruit hanging from the
boughs. So basically a plumbing forest
(instead of a fruit forest). Also in the
mist of it all are damaged doors and
windows that just about survived along
with the plumbing.

KEY THUMBNAILS

Top, Exterior Shot: Forest of pipes with

baths, taps, sinks, showers etc deforming
the original pipes shape.
Left, Interior shot, looking up at a tree from
the ground next to the trunk, (point of view
is sheltered which makes it interior as
Calvino describes the city with no ceiling or
walls so the whole city is completely
outside).

the pipe trees in the forest.
Final concept art will be work
of surrealism.
