Student Cheating Behavior As a Factor of Workplace Deviance
Cheating is a large problem that it can be considered a worldwide issue and/or as a common
phenomenon in some societies. Cheating can be defined as academic dishonesty. It includes
many behaviors such as a crib notes on an exam, copying answers from another students
paper, letting others copy a homework paper, plagiarizing and ghostwriting, to name just a
few. These types of behavior can be traced in history through thousands of years (Desalegn
and Asres, 2014; Bushway and Nash, 1977). It is stated from well-known documented
research it is evident that cheating has increased at least three fold over the last 65 years.
As alarming as this is, the numbers have more or less stabilized over the past 25 years at 70
to 75% (Graves,2011). Thus different studies were conducted about this matter if it has
effect or relation as predictor of workplace deviance (Desalegn and Asres, 2014; Bratton and
Strittmatter, 2013; Graves, 2011; Bushway and Nash,1977).
Cheating as factor or predictor of workplace deviance may lead a professional or nonprofessional individuals or groups to a poor quality of working ethics. As a study conducted
in Hawassa University College of Medicine and Health Science on how does cheating affect
the students future a medical professional, it stated that it it has serious consequences for
human life, social values, and the economy.
(Desalegn and Asres, 2014). As well as cademic honesty was positively related to business
ethics, was supported. Consistent with past research ,this hypothesis was supported. There
is a strong positive relationship between student attitudes toward academic honesty and
business ethics (Bratton and Strittmatter,2013)
A cross sectional study was conducted. As part of the study an independent variables are
identified included sex, age, cultural background, parents education level, religious belief,
cumulative GPA, workload of students, the experience of cheating at high school, type of
high school attended, perception of peers to cheating, competition with peers, social drug
use, class size and year of study. (Desalegn and Asres ,2014). According to Desalegn and
Asres (2013) as one of the results, greater number of females than males reported cheating
in high school and university in contrast with Bushway and Nash (1977) that concerning the
relationship of sex of the students and incidence of cheating, the findings seem to indicate
(with a few exceptions) that the amount of cheating among females is somewhat less than
the cheating engaged in by males.

Studies concerning the factors influenced or results cheating, most of it has similarities such
as pressure in school environment including teachers, parents, classmate, peers, courses as
well as high school behavior toward cheating can be brought up to universities are stated
(Desalegn and Asres, 2014; Bratton and Strittmatter, 2013; Bushway and Nash,1977).
Cornehlsen (1965) findings result that any kind of pressure from administrator, teachers,
and/or parents frequently influenced cheating. Steigninger, Johnson and Kirts (1964) found a
definite relationship between lack of meaningfulness courses and cheating.
From this characteristics and/or factors and behaviors of cheating the has been practiced by
students and from different studies conducted we can tell that there are chances that this
matter can be a predictor of a workplace deviance. The studys findings are similar to those of
other studies focusing on the relationship between cheating and unethical behavior in the workplace.
Students who cheat on tests and/or homework in high school and/or college are more likely to engage
in property- and production-deviant activities than their counterparts who do not cheat. However,
this study indicates that high school cheating habits are a better indicator of a persons deviant behavior
in the workplace (Graves, 2011).
