Showcase Your Expertise with a Certification as a

Building Energy Modeling Professional

Energy modeling software simplifies the task of improving your buildings
energy efficiency by integrating modeling into the design process
As a certified Building Energy Modeling Professional
(BEMP), you can:
Rise in a Rising Field. The demand for quality building energy modeling is
growing rapidly, driven by rising energy prices and breakthroughs in energy
efficiency technology. Certification as a BEMP shows you have the necessary
experience, knowledge, and aptitude.
Distinguish Yourself. Using your designation on your business cards, letterhead,
email auto signatures, and proposals gives you a definite competitive edge. This is
a great way to enhance your professional reputation.
Let ASHRAE Promote Your Services. ASHRAE lists BEMP certificants and
contact information on its website, in ASHRAE Insights and in ASHRAE press
releases. This list puts you right in front of people looking for your services.

In a recent survey of
ASHRAE members, 65%
of respondents considered
ASHRAE certifications

high industry standards

What is the Purpose

of the BEMP
Certification?
Building energy modeling
demands certified professionals.
The purpose is to assess individuals ability to evaluate, choose,
use, calibrate, and interpret
the results of energy modeling
software when applied to building
and systems energy performance
and economics and to certify
individuals competence to model
new and existing buildings and
systems with their full range
of physics.

Conduct Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) Analysis and Submit bEQ

Workbooks. Only BEMPs can conduct the As Designed rating process and deliver
an analysis of a buildings as-built conditions. A standardized model is used that
neutralizes operating conditions and allows the energy efficiency of different buildings
to be compared without the effects of the current occupancy and operation. Because
the model is developed by a certified BEMP, the building owner receives professional
guidance on how the modeling results apply to their building.
Certification Documents Competence. BEMP certification verifies that the
professional understands the methodology of software choice, modeling energy
performance, troubleshooting of simulation results and analysis of modeling results
that can reduce HVAC&R energy consumption and lower utility bills.

What are the benefits of a BEMP Certification?

For Certified Professionals
Enhance your credibility
Expand your industry knowledge
Demonstrates commitment to improving yourself, your work product, and the industry
Improve your options for being hired or promoted and to generate new business
For Employers
Demonstrate corporate commitment to excellence by employing qualified engineers
Improve morale by supporting professional advancement
Distinguish your firm from the competition by employing ASHRAE-certified engineers
Provide guidance for hiring, promotion and assigning significant projects
For Consumers
Gain confidence that energy modeling software is chosen and interpreted by a
competent professional
Attract and keep satisfied tenants
Receive guidance for lowering energy costs
Develop a business relationship with a BEMP whose concern is your building
energy performance only BEMPs can perform the As Designed rating of bEQ

Add bEQ to Your Services Portfolio

bEQ is a technically sound, yet easily understood, building energy rating system. The bEQ As Designed
rating evaluates the energy efficiency of a buildings physical characteristics and major systems
independent of the operating and occupational factors which provides the building owner or tenant
a clear picture of the buildings estimated potential energy efficiency. The rating is based on a model
of the buildings standardized energy use using a specified set of operating assumptions and modeling
inputs. Because it does not require 12 months of operating data, the As Designed rating can be used for
buildings less than one year old. This rating must be conducted by a certified Building Energy Modeling
Professional (BEMP).
Developed by a team of leading building design and systems engineers, Building Energy Quotient
(bEQ) is administered by ASHRAE. bEQ lets commercial building owners zero in on opportunities
to lower building operating costs and make informed decisions to increase value.
To ensure the credibility and consistency of bEQ, only individuals certified as Building Energy Modeling
Professionals may submit bEQ As Designed Workbooks to earn a label.
The building owner receives:
An on-site visit by a certified Building Energy Modeling Professional to confirm that the
modeling inputs are consistent with the building as constructed
bEQ As Designed Workbook of the complete building rating information (reviewed and
verified by ASHRAE, a not-for-profit organization with over 55,000 members worldwide)
bEQ Certificate, presenting key building performance factors and for compliance with
disclosure laws

Building energy modeling is becoming pretty standard on large commercial

projects, and its important to our clients to have a way to assess skill levels
of energy modelers to include on a design team. The ASHRAE Building Energy
Modeling Professional certification is really the first certification that lets new
clients know that I have a strong set of both engineering and modeling skills,
as well as a good amount of modeling experience; it sets me apart from a lot
of competition. As the BEMP certification becomes more and more well-known,
I think it will really be necessary for anyone doing professional energy modeling.
There are already some organizations who are requiring it for engineers doing
modeling work for their programs.

How Do I Get Certified as a BEMP?

Although you must meet certain eligibility criteria before being allowed
to participate, the actual certification process is straightforward and
involves four easy steps:
1. Read the Candidate Guidebook
Visit www.ashrae.org/BEMP and download the guidebook
for the BEMP program.
2. Complete the Application
Fill out the online application and submit electronically.
3. Schedule an Examination
BEMP examinations are offered at nearly 200 conveniently
located testing centers worldwide. Candidates may schedule
an appointment online or by telephone.
4. Review Available Resources
The Candidate Guidebook identifies available resources to help
candidates hone their understanding of the body of knowledge
tested on the exam. Purchase of books or course registrations
is not a prerequisite.

How Much Does the Certification Exam Cost?

ASHRAE member rate: $295
(non-member fee: $415).

Renewal/Recertification Requirements
The BEMP certification is renewable every three years. To retain
certification, each certificant must earn 45 PDHs during the three
year period following initial certification or the last renewal.
