Introducing the G-TAP

This guide describes how to install and connect G-TAP modules.
Gigamons G-TAP modules are passive, optical splitter taps for
common optical media and speeds. You can install up to four G-TAP
modules in a single, 1/2U TAP-200 system chassis. Each G-TAP
module can tap two separate full-duplex links, allowing you to tap
eight separate optical links with a single chassis.

G-TAP Specifications
Gigamon recommends the following split ratios for G-TAPs
used with GigaVUE nodes:
50/50 and 60/40 G-TAPs can be used with 10G or 1G links.
70/30 G-TAPs on 850nm fiber (TAP-271 and TAP-272) are not
recommended for 10G links.
The TAP-453 is the only G-TAP tested for HighFlow 40G/100G links.

Installing G-TAP Modules in the Chassis

Install a G-TAP module in the TAP-200 chassis as follows:
1. Select an open bay from one of the four bays in the front of
the TAP-200 chassis and remove its protective slot cover.
2. Gently slide the module into the target slot until the faceplate
is flush with the chassis.
3. Tighten the thumbscrews on the module faceplate.

G-TAP Features
The G-TAP has the following features:
Offers completely passive full-duplex monitoring.
Requires no external power.
Features dual LC connectors for network links.
Allows different tap media types in a single chassis.
Provides absolute fault-tolerance.
Integrates with GigaVUE data access switches for maximum flexibility.

Tap a link with the G-TAP by disconnecting an existing link

between two network devices (for example, the connection
between an access switch and a distribution network) and
reconnecting the link so that network data flows through the tap.
1. Start by selecting which pair of X/Y ports to use on
the G-TAP. The two pairs on the tap are indicated with
silkscreened brackets between the ports on the taps
faceplate.
2. Connect the dual fiber cable from one network device to the
X IN/OUT dual LC connectors on the tap. LC connectors are
keyed and will only fit in one direction.
3. Connect another dual fiber cable from the second network
device to the Y IN/OUT dual LC connectors on the tap.
4. Connect separate single fiber cables from the XOUT and
YOUT ports to separate network ports on the GigaVUE data
access switch.
Light arriving at the X IN port is tapped and sent out XOUT
Light arriving at the Y IN port is tapped and sent out YOUT
Do NOT connect a dual fiber cable from XOUT/YOUT to a
single port on the GigaVUE. This will send light back into the
G-TAP, potentially causing link issues.
5. When you connect the single fiber cable to the GigaVUE,
make sure you only connect to the IN half of the network
port. Leave the OUT half of the port unconnected. The
transceiver has arrows on the latch showing you which half
of the port is IN and which half is OUT.

G-TAP Data Flow

Light arriving at IN ports is tapped and sent both to the
opposite OUT port and the corresponding analyzer port
(XOUT and YOUT).
10G links require G-TAPs with a 50/50 or 60/40 split ratio;
1G links can use 70/30, 50/50, or 60/40 split ratios.

Connect the XOUT and YOUT ports to separate

GigaVUE network ports with a single fiber
cable for each.
Make sure you only connect to the IN half of
the GigaVUE network ports and leave the OUT
half unconnected. SFP transceivers have
arrows on the latch indicating direction.
For Dual LC connectors with the SFP latch up
when closed (top row of a GigaPORT module),
In (Rx) is on the right and Out (Tx) is on the
left. The latch faces down when closed on
the bottom row of a GigaPORT module, so In
is on the left.

Do NOT use a duplex patch cable

to connect the XOUT and YOUT ports to
a single GigaVUE port.
Because GigaVUE network ports
transmit light out the OUT half of
the port, this would send light back
into the G-TAP, potentially causing
link issues.
