Mega earthquake of 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April creating large scale damage
and loss of human lives. The earthquake has caused a number of landslides and avalanches. Strong
aftershocks, including a 6.7 magnitude quake on 26 April, continue to threaten the lives of thousands
of people and to further damage buildings and infrastructures. According to initial estimations and
based on the latest earthquake intensity mapping, over 8 million people are affected in 39 of 75
districts. Over 2 million people live in the 14 most critically hit districts. The Central and Western
Region, including the Kathmandu Valley districts, are the worst affected with large impact of the
earthquake in mountainous and hilly districts Dhading, Gorkha, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk,
Kavre, Nuwakot, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur and Ramechhap. Secondary data analysis
and earthquake intensity mapping suggest that over 600,000 houses have been damaged and that
2.8 million people have been displaced. To response to the current situation in Nepal, UN-Habitat is in
the process to supporting in selected areas of 5 earthquake affect districts Sindhupalchowk,
Dolakha, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur to support affected families in constructing temporary
shelter, establishing resource centers to provide information and education, training and technical
guidance to construct safer shelters and to provide adequate Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
As part of UN-Habitats assistance to the affected families and communities in acquiring access to
safer shelter and WASH, we are we are looking for qualified candidates for various positions in its
Kathmandu Office and in field offices of Sindupalchowk and Dolakha.
Senior Engineer

The Senior Engineer (SE) in close consultation with and guidance from the Team Leader shall be
required to support in planning, implementing and managing the Temporary shelter in earthquake
affected areas. The SE will support developing implementation plans of the programme, supervision
to programme staff, and for liaising with government, and NGO partners, beneficiaries and
community organizations.
