Functional Benefic & Malefic Planets For Each Ascendant

Natural benefic planets cannot be considered benefic for all the ascendants. In Indian
Astrology, the benefic or malefic result of planets has been categorized according to the
Ascendant. As Such, Jupiter, Moon and Venus which are considered natural benefic
planets can play role of malefic planets and Sun, Mars and Saturn known otherwise
malefic can give positive results.
Rahu and Ketu always act as functional malefic for all the ascendants.
The principle governing functional benefic or functional malefic planets for a particular
ascendant can be analyzed as under:
Functional benefic planets rule the ownership of trikona house for that ascendant, i.e.
fifth and ninth house but at the same time such planet should not have its mooltrikona
sign in 6th, 8th or 12th house. Planets which are friendly to ascendant should also be
considered functional benefic.
Similarly, planet should be considered Functional malefic only when he occupies the
ownership of 6th, 8th and 12th house.
Lord of Ascendant is always considered to be the most functional benefic planet even
though the other sign of ascendant is placed in 6th or 8th house as in the case Aries,
Scorpio, Taurus and Libra Ascendants. Aries and Libra ascendants have their
moontrikona sign in first house of chart. As such for these ascendants Mars and Venus
should be considered more auspicious.
Placement and strength of planet should also be taken care of before arriving at final
decision.

For Aries Ascendant

Functional Benefic: Mars, Sun, Jupiter and Moon are functional benefic. Jupiter is the
most benefic being the lord of trikona. Mars is benefic being the lord of ascendant. Sun,
being lord of trikona i.e. fifth house and also Moon, being lord of Kendra who is friendly
with Ascendant Lord.
Functional Malefic: Rahu, Ketu and Mercury. Mercury is most malefic, being the lord of
3rd and 6th house.
Neutral: Venus and Saturn

For Taurus Ascendant

Functional Benefic: Saturn is the most functional benefic planet for Taurus ascendant as
he governs two auspicious house of the chart i.e. ninth and tenth house- one trikona and
one Kendra. As such Saturn can be considered as Rajyogkarak for Taurus Ascendant. In
order, Venus and Mercury are next benefic planets but these two planets do not provide as
much good result as Saturn does.
Functional Malefic: Rahu, Ketu, Moon, Mars and Jupite are functional malefic. Jupiter
is most malefic planet as he owns eighth house and has its mooltrikona sign placed
therein.
Neutral: Sun

For Gemini Ascendant

Functional Benefic: Venus is the most benefic planet for Gemini Ascendant as he is the
lord of trikona and friendly with the ascendant lord. Saturn is another functional benefic
as he owns ninth house and is placed in his mooltrikona sign.
Functional Malefic: Rahu, Ketu, Mars, Jupiter and Sun are functional malefic planets for
Gemini Ascendant. Amongst all these, Mars is the most malefic being lord of eighth and
eleventh house.
Neutral: Mercury and Moon. Though Mercury is ascendant lord, but due to
kendraadhipati dosha, he should be considered as neutral.

For Cancer Ascendant

Functional Benefic: Moon and Mars are very auspicious and most functional benefic
planets for Cancer Ascendant. Moon is lord of Ascendant and Mars is lord of fifth and
tenth house I.e. one trikona and one Kendra.
Functional Malefic: Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury are malefic functional planets. Jupiter
has its mool trikona sigtn in sixth house; Saturn in eighth house and Mercury in twelfth
house.
