GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
First Semester 2016-2017

I.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course deals with the study of political systems and key political institutions in the development of the Southeast
Asian nations. Specifically, it deals with the countries in Southeast Asia examining political science theories about State
formation, democratic transition and consolidation, economic development, nationalism and civil conflict. The diversities
across and within the countries on Southeast Asia allow for revelations through the comparative method about the way in
which politics operates and produces particular social and economic outcomes.

II.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Have a general awareness of all the countries of Southeast Asia: their recent histories, political systems, levels of
economic development and defining characteristics.
2. Develop skills for making informed comparisons across the countries of Southeast Asia and between those
countries and others elsewhere in the world; in particular, students should understand the political and economic
institutions in Southeast Asia and be able to distinguish these institutions from those in other regions of the world.
3. Build skills for understanding the presentation of causal relationships and the (graphical) presentation of data
4. Think about pressing global issues economic development; terrorism; democratic consolidation in the context of
Southeast Asia and hold informed policy views on these topics.

COMPUTATION OF GRADES:
Prelim Grade + Midterm Grade + Pre-Final Grade + Final Grade

CLASSROOM POLICIES
1. All students are required to regularly and promptly attend all class sessions. Attendance policy as stipulated in the
student manual (page 15, II) will be implemented.
2. Absences are counted starting from the first day of class of the semester. A student who is absent beyond 20% of the
total number of class periods will be given a grade of 5.00.
3. There are four major examinations; Prelim, Midterm, Pre-Final and Final Examinations. Student should take the exams on
the scheduled date. Special examination will be given upon presenting a letter of excuse signed by the parent/guardian,
noted by the Dean. In cases of sickness, medical certificate is required.
4. Use of laptops and tablets are allowed in class only if it contains the discussion or lecture notes. Browsing through social
media sites is not allowed.
5. The final grade of students will be posted online. If there is query about the grade, the student should meet with the
faculty with regard to the computation of grades.
