Putting a fresh
spin on tradition

An interview with...

Jessica Decker

The former industrial seamstress giving cross stitch a

graphic, supersized makeover tells us about her design inspiration
Interview by Jessica Bateman

eight years ago when a friend bought

me the book Subversive Cross Stitch by
Julie Jackson. Soon after, my friend
Erin and I started doing a craft night
every week where we would get
together and cross stitch. This led to
a collaboration for an art battle, where
we scaled up a pattern to make a 9x9ft
cross stitched piece, which we made
in front of a crowd. Ever since then,
Ive only worked on large-scale pieces.

designs that are bold,
fresh and contemporary! The
creative talent whos putting this
exciting twist on our favourite craft
is graphic designer and art director
Jessica Decker. Originally from
Detroit and now living in Brooklyn,
she worked as an industrial
seamstress during college, sewing
large graphics and fabric elements
for exhibits. Fusing these sewing
skills with her design know-how
eventually resulted in her unique
stitched pieces. We caught up with
Jessica to talk about her inspirations.

the 50s. I still have the machine its

one of my favourite possessions.

Whats your earliest craft memory?

My grandma, Marvel, taught me to

craft when I was very young the
earliest memory I have is her teaching
me to sew on her vintage Singer from

22

JANUARY 2014

What inspired you to try giant

cross stitching?

For the art battle piece, I wanted to

create something that was modern,
graphic and captivating to watch
being made. My industrial seamstress
experience helped me take a traditional
craft and scale it up in a modern way.

How did you discover cross stitch,

and why do you like it?

Describe your creative process.

My grandma also taught me to cross

stitch, but I lost interest in it until about

I sketch out my designs on grid

Sometimes, if theyre very detailed,

I work in Illustrator software. I look
for inspiration everywhere vintage
signage, Japanese cross stitch patterns,
70s craft magazines, colourful
packaging and hand-drawn
typography, to name a few. Usually
it takes me about two or three
nights to nish a piece, depending
on the number of stitches involved
and the size.

Who are your creative heroes

and why do you admire them?

First, product designers Somethings

Hiding in Here (www.somethings
hidinginhere.typepad.com). They
sell adorable hand-made items, such
as gingham bow ties and wooden
rings. I also love Margaret Kilgallen,
who created hand-painted large-scale
type. I like the scale of her murals,
along with her subdued colour palette.
In terms of heroes that relate to my day
job, I admire editorial stylist Randi
Brookman Harris. She has a great eye
and I adore her simple and colourful
still-life set-ups.

Whats your favourite music

to craft to?

I usually prefer to listen to energetic

music when crafting. Some of my
current favourites are Dale Earnhardt
Jr. Jr., M.I.A., Ke$ha, Phoenix, The
Cool Kids and Lorde.

WorldMags.net

Describe a typical day in your life.

Im a deputy art director on a magazine,

so during the day I work on page
layouts, come up with concepts for
photo shoots or work on location at
shoots. Some days I go to kickboxing
or boot camp after work, then I craft
in the evenings. Its refreshing to work
on handmade pieces after sitting at a
computer all day. If Im not working
on orders for my Etsy shop or creating
custom pieces, Im coming up with
new designs and working on other
types of large-scale needle art Ive
recently started working on some
bigger embroidery projects. At
weekends, Im either busy crafting
or exploring my new neighbourhood
of Brooklyn, New York.
Whats next for you and
your business?

I plan to continue selling cross stitch

and embroidery pieces on Etsy, and
Id like to keep making custom work
for people. Eventually, Id love to
work on a DIY book of giant cross
stitch patterns. For now, you can nd
my patterns for making your own
giant cross stitch over at Kollabora.

Make a notebook cover

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

TRIM your stitching to 25x25cm,

leaving only 4cm of space beyond
the left stitched edge. Place the
contrast fabric over your stitching,
right sides together. Align the fabrics
and machine stitch only along the
left edge of your piece.

OPEN out and press the seam at.

Hand sew or glue your length of ribbon
on the front, next to the seam. Place
your backing fabric over your stitched
piece, right sides together. Pin and sew
along three sides, leaving one short
side open for turning.

TURN your piece right side out and

press the raw edges under. Topstitch
along the opening. Fold the right- and
left-hand sides toward the middle,
creating pockets. Hand sew the top
and bottom of each pocket, being
careful to only sew through the lining.

TRAILING THREADS
Its best to avoid carrying threads across
areas that are free from stitching. Trailing
threads can cause shadows on the front
of the nished piece, so try working each
area individually and weaving the threads
through the back of your stitches.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

TRIM around the edges of your

stitching, leaving 1.5cm of fabric
outside each edge for seam
allowances. Cut your wadding,
lining and backing pieces to the
same size and shape as your
stitched piece.

MEASURE the side length of

your bag frame. Mark 11mm
longer than your measurement
along the angled edge of each
side of your fabric. Cut a notch
in the seam allowance at the
points you just marked.

LAY the backing over your

stitching and sandwich
between wadding. Sew the
bottom half between the two
notches. Repeat with lining.
Turn your stitching right side
out and place the lining inside.

SEW the outer and lining

pieces together across the
top of each ap, between the
notches. Glue each ap into
the bag frame following your
line of stitching. Push the full
seam allowance into the frame.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

WRAP your strip of fabric

around the white cord and
pin the long edges of the
strip together. If you dont
have a long-enough strip,
cut several strips of fabric
and sew them together into
one extended piece.

SWITCH to a machine zipper

foot, which allows you to sew
closer to the piping cord than
a traditional foot. Sew up to
the edge of the piping cord,
without sewing over it. The
piping should look like the
above image once nished.

TRIM your stitching to

40x23cm. Pin your piping
cord in place on the cushion
front, easing it into a curve at
the corners. Trim the piping
away from the overlap end
and nest the fabric over the
other end.

PLACE your stitching

between two pieces of
backing fabric and pin.
Machine sew as close to the
piping as possible. Leave an
opening for turning. Turn,

stitch closed.

KREINIK THREADS

Genevieve Brading

Kreiniks braid is non divisible and

should be used singly in the needle. It is
a coarser thread than stranded cotton,
so it might be worth using a larger, size
22 tapestry needle, which will help to
stretch each aida hole and reduce the
amount of wear and tear on the thread.

MAKE CONTINUOUS BIAS TAPE
Create bias tape with this simple four-step guide
Step 3
Step 1
Step 2

CUT your fabric into a square

and mark the sides, as shown
above, with two pins pointing
in and two pins pointing out.
Cut the square diagonally
and align the inward pointing
pins as in the bottom portion.

SEW a 1/4in (0.5cm) seam

across the top of your
triangle. Press the seam
open. Draw parallel lines on
the wrong side of your fabric,
along the long edge, at the
width needed for your tape.

CREATE a tube, bringing the

two pinned edges together,
keeping the marked lines
on the outside. Offset the
edges by one marked width,
matching the lines. Sew a 1/4in
seam. Press the seam open.

Step 4

CUT your tape along the

lines, working your way
around the tube. You can
determine how much tape
will result from your square
by dividing the area (length
x width) by your strip width.

MAKE A PIPED PILLOWCASE

Using a machine zipper foot makes perfect piping every time
Step 3
Step 1
Step 2

Step 4

CUT a 60cm piece of bias

tape. Wrap your tape around
the piping cord and pin the
long edges together. Sew
along the edge using a zipper
foot. This allows you to sew
close to the piping cord
without sewing over it.

FOLD your fabric in half,

right sides together. Match
the piping and seams on
each side. Machine sew the
two long edges. Trim the
corners, turn right side out
and press. Pop a pillow form
inside your pillowcase.

TRIM a piece of fabric to

30x60cm. Pin a piece of
piping along the right side of
each 30cm edge. Trim away
1cm of cord from your piping
at each end, to eliminate
seam bulk. Hand or machine
tack in place.

CUT two 30x10cm pieces

of fabric. Right sides in, pin
along the piped edges of
your fabric. Machine sew,
using your zipper foot to get
as close to the piping cord as
possible without sewing over
it. Hem the two 30cm edges.

MAKE A DREAM JOURNAL
For perfect script, use a 1.5cm-wide strip of bias tape
Step 3
Step 1
Step 2

Step 4

FOLD and press the raw

edges of your tape over each
other to create skinny tape.
Cut two pieces of fabric to
30x25cm and sew the 25cm
edge. Open and press. Cut a
57x25cm backing fabric piece.

LAY the two pieces of fabric

right sides in. Sew all the way
around, leaving an opening
to turn. Turn, press the raw
edges in and stitch closed.
Fold to create pockets. Hand
sew the sides of each pocket.

DRAW your message across

your fabric with a pencil. Pin
the tape along your mark. It
may be easier to work your
message in several sections.
Fold under raw ends or cover
with the next piece of tape.

PRESS the tape in place. Use

a clear-drying fabric glue to
secure your tape, removing
pins as you work. Hand sew
the edges of the tape with
small invisible stitches once
the glue is dry.

MAKE A SLEEP MASK

We used a 6cm-wide strip of bias tape for our mask
Step 3
Step 1
Step 2

Step 4

CUT two 40cm strips of bias

tape. Fold and press the raw
edges to the centre. Fold the
strips in half and press again.
Machine stitch close to the
edge of each strip. These
strips will form the ties for
your mask.

PIN a tie to each side of the

mask. Fold and pin the tape to
the back of the mask, covering
your stitching with the folded
edge. Stitch from the top
of your mask, in the ditch of
your seam to catch the edge
of the tape on the back.

CREATE a template on a
piece of cardboard. Ours
is 23cm long. Use your
template to cut two fabric
pieces and one wadding
piece. Layer the wadding
between the two fabric
pieces, right sides out.

FOLD and press an 80cm

strip of tape, as you did in
step one. Do not sew along
the bottom. Unfold one edge
of the tape and pin along
the raw edges of the mask.
Machine sew just inside the
rst fold of the tape.

basics
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
NEEDLES

STRANDED COTTON

AIDA

For basic stitching youll need a tapestry needle

that has a blunt tip and large eye. Use a size 24
needle for most aidas, and a size 26 for evenweaves
and linens. Use a sharp embroidery needle for
ner details such as backstitch and French knots.

Embroidery thread is also commonly referred

to as stranded cotton. Each thread length is made
up of six strands of cotton twisted together. The
chart key will indicate how many strands youll need
to stitch your design with.

Aida is an ideal choice for cross stitch beginners.

14 count is the most common, although its available
in a huge variety of colours and counts. Each cross
stitch is worked over a single aida block, making
counting and keeping your place a cinch.

EMBROIDERY SCISSORS

HOOPS AND FRAMES

EVENWEAVE

Embroidery scissors are an absolute must-have for

stitchers and can be picked up for just a few pounds.
Keep yours sharp by only using them to cut threads
that way a decent pair should last you a lifetime.

Though not absolutely essential, we do recommend

using an embroidery hoop or frame to keep an even
stitching tension. Just make sure its big enough to
t your entire design.

Evenweave is much simpler to work with than you

might think. Start with a 25 or 28 count evenweave,
such as Zweigart Lugana. Once youre condent,
try your hand at a linen version.

Start stitching on aida

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

CUT a 40cm thread length, and thread

your needle with two of the six strands.
Knot one end and start with a waste
knot (opposite). Make a diagonal half
cross stitch across a single aida block.

MAKE a second diagonal stitch to

complete your rst cross. Alternatively,
you can work a row of half cross
stitches rst, then work back on
yourself to complete the stitches.

THE direction of your diagonals is up to

you, just be sure all your stitches cross in
the same direction. Otherwise, your
design will look uneven. Continue
working from the centre outward.

Start stitching on evenweave

80

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

INSTEAD of taking your needle

diagonally across a single aida block,
take your needle diagonally across two
evenweave threads, creating a half
cross stitch as before.

MAKE a second diagonal stitch to

complete your rst cross stitch. Work
each stitch individually or work a row of
half cross stitches, then work back on
yourself to complete the stitches.

CONTINUE working from the centre of

your design outward. If you nd the
extra counting a bit daunting at rst,
dont give up. We promise itll become
second nature in no time.

BACKSTITCH
Use this easy stitch to give a neat outline and add details
Step 1
Step 2

Step 3

WORK your backstitch using a sharp

needle, once youve nished the cross
stitch. To secure your thread, weave it
through the back of your stitches, then
bring your needle up to the surface.

FOR each additional stitch, bring your

needle up 1-3 chart squares away from
your previous stitch. Then pass it back
through the fabric at the same point as
your previous stitch.

WORK your backstitch over about 1-3

chart squares at a time, making sure to
closely follow the chart. Any longer and
your stitches could end up becoming
loose and pulling out.

WASTE KNOT
A simple way to get started stitching
Step 1
Step 2

Step 3

Reverse of fabric

KNOT one end of your thread and take

it down through the front of your fabric,
about 2cm from your starting point.
Then bring it back up to the front of
your fabric to make your rst stitch.

BEGIN stitching your design, making

sure youre stitching over your starting
thread with each stitch. You can work
whole stitches or work half stitches then
come back on yourself.

ONCE youre happy that your starting

thread is secure, snip off the knot. To
secure your thread when youve
nished stitching, weave it through the
back of your stitches as shown here.

LOOP KNOT
This easy start to your cross stitch is brilliantly neat
Step 1
Step 2

Reverse of fabric

IF YOURE working in two strands, a

loop knot is the easiest and neatest
method. Cut a single length of thread,
twice as long as normal. Fold it in half
to create a loop at one end.

THREAD your needle with the two tail

ends, just as you normally would. Bring
your needle up to the front of your
fabric, leaving a small loop of thread
on the reverse.

WorldMags.net

Step 3

Reverse of fabric

MAKE a half cross stitch, passing your

needle through the loop on the reverse
as shown here. Pull all the way to secure
the thread. Now continue with your
stitching as normal.

FRENCH KNOTS

Go dotty with this simple way to add neat knots to your designs
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3

USE a sharp embroidery needle to help

pierce the fabric. Bring your needle up
at your starting point and wrap your
thread once or twice around the needle.
Use one strand for a small knot and two
for a slightly chunkier knot.

HOLD your thread end rmly and take

your needle down, ever so slightly over
from where you came up. Slide the
twisted thread down the needle, so it
rests on the fabrics surface, and gently
feed the needle through the fabric.

KEEP your thread as taut as possible

to prevent the knot becoming loose.
Gently pull your thread through to
tighten the knot, so that it sits neatly on
the surface. And remember, if you dont
get it right away, keep practising!

FRACTIONALS
These little stitches are great for adding a bit more detail to your work
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3

START with a quarter stitch, working

from one corner into the centre. For
evenweave, there is already a hole in the
centre to stitch into. With aida, youll
need to pierce the centre of the block.

MAKE your next quarter stitch in your

second colour, coming up from the
opposite corner and back down
through the centre. Youve now created
a half cross stitch.

FINISH your stitch by making a half

cross stitch. Fractionals are shown in the
chart either as two symbols opposite
one another in a chart square, or by a
symbol opposite an empty space.

BEADING

HALF CROSS
STITCH

WASTE AND
SOLUBLE CANVAS

HALF cross stitches are exactly what

they sound like half of a cross stitch.
Each diagonal stitch is worked across
two evenweave threads or one aida
block. Theyre most often used to create
a subtle background in a design.

WASTE and soluble canvases are used

when stitching on plain fabrics and felts.
Tack onto your fabric and stitch as
normal. Soluble canvas dissolves in
water. For waste canvas, soak in water
then remove each thread individually.

TO ATTACH beads, youll need a thin,

exible beading needle. Thread with
one strand of cotton. Bring your needle
to the front of your design, thread on a
bead and make a diagonal stitch to
secure the bead. If you like, stitch
through again for added security.

Step 1

Step 3

TRIM your stitching to

14x14cm. Sew a piece of
patterned fabric to the
top and bottom. Open out
and press. Cut your three
cream pieces of fabric to
the same size as your front
stitched piece.

RIGHT sides together, pin

both sets of sewn pieces
together, lining up the
seams at the middle. Sew
along the edges, leaving
an opening for turning.
Turn right side out and
push the lining to the inside.

Step 2

Step 4

LAY one piece of cream

fabric over your stitching,
right sides together.
Machine sew along the
right hand side. Open out
and press. Repeat with
the remaining cream
fabric pieces.

SLIDE your cover over the

notebook and check it ts
very snugly. If it is loose,
re-sew until it ts perfectly.
Once youve got it right,
slip stitch the remaining
opening closed and slide
over the ap of your book.

Step 1
TRIM your stitching and a piece of
backing fabric into a circle that is slightly
larger than your hoop. Iron both pieces
until they are perfectly smooth. You
can use spray starch if you have it, for
added smoothness.

Step 2
PLACE the inside hoop beneath the
two pieces and the outer hoop on top.
Centre and press over your work. If
necessary, pull your fabric edges until
the front is taut and smooth. Slowly
tighten the screw.

TURN your stitching to the reverse and

cut a piece of felt to t the inside of the
inner circle. Place the felt inside the
circle. You can use a bit of PVA glue to
keep it in place. The felt will help your
work stay nice and fresh.

Step 4
USE a glue gun or double-sided tape to
begin attaching the rst layer of fabric,
pulling it taut as you go. Repeat for the
second layer. Cut a second felt circle
