Questions 12 16 are based on the following passage.

Her face is free of make-up except a hint of gloss. She does have a lot to
smile about. After six years of juggling a full-time job and sneaking in studio time,
she has finally released an album.

The title of the album is Sangkar. Presently, Atilia is, by industry standard,
a little pass the sell-by date but her growing fans locally and in Indonesia, say 5
otherwise. Her old-soul style of jazz has made major music distributors to suggest
that her music isnt radio friendly and therefore, isnt worthy of a recording
contract. Against the odds, Atilia secure a contract with a major music recording
company, EMI.

Good music is good music, she said. A few recording companies asked 10
me for a bonus track or at least I remix one of my songs. For me, an album is
sacred, especially when you worked on it for six years. So, I didnt change
anything.

Some might call her arrogant, but in truth, Atilia holds to her beliefs. Jazz
will never have the same pull as pop music, not in this country especially, but 15
rather than sell out to the establishment and letting down her fans, she prefers to
be true to herself.

Her music is the type of music she grew up with. The nightlife of the 1970s
KL is far different from the current one. Live music in hotel lounges often drew
families made up of dual income couple who understood the importance of 20
kicking back after a long week. They saw no harm in allowing their children to tag
along and sip an overpriced Coke while listening to good music.

At the Paddock, Salmiah Hassan captivated the crowd night after night
with her brand of jazz music. Some of them might remember spotting a child
hiding behind the drum set every night. That child now grins as she recollects 25
those nights, never once complaining of the sound of drums. I was probably five
or six then. she says with a smile. She recalls the waiters and waitresses giving
her peanuts as she sat out on the set avoiding detection from the management.

Even now when I listen to songs like Say a Little Prayer, I remember
those moments I sat behind the drum, waiting for her to finish. Atilia says. My 30
mom always took me to rehearsals, she would sing in the dress she had sewn the
night before, complete with sequins. She was happy doing it and that inspired
me.

My maternal grandmother was a singer too. She was always happy to see
my mother on TV and she would cry. I knew then what exactly I want to do, In 35

protecting her child from the hardship of making it as a singer, Salmiah forbade
Atilia from singing. She was strict, she never let me sing on stage, Atilia says.
Of course in her childs mind she was well off and her mother, successful.
9

I used to think we were so rich because we had dinner at hotels every

night. She only had one coupon for her. I would take the coupon and she would 40
only eat what I didnt finish. I didnt get that. I used to wonder why we ate at
hotels but went there by bus.

10

Despite that, Salmiah gave her the green light to sing at studios, recording
jingles for TV commercials. You might remember the high-pitched theme song
from KFC commercials from the 80s, Lets Go to the Zoo and the catchy Maggi 45
Mee, Fast to cook, good to eat.

11

Based on her performance of those jingles, Atilia was offered numerous

recording contracts but her mother refused to allow it. Now with life experience
under her belt. Atilia understands her mothers concern.

12

After she finished her SPM, she didnt do anything else but sing. She 50
wanted me to do something else and have something to fall back on. I was very
angry with her before for not letting me to sing. I loved doing it and I knew I
wanted to do it so much and saw how happy she was doing it. I didnt understand.
Now I understand that she just wanted the best for me.

I

was angry with my friend;

told my wrath, my wrath did end.
was angry with my foe:
told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears,

Night & morning with my tears:
And I sunned it with smiles,
And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night.
Till it bore an apple bright.
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine.
And into my garden stole,
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning glad I see;
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
