Why and how do you improve fitness/strength for
personal gain?

Lesson #

Title:

How & Why do we measure fitness?

Learning Intention:
To learn about the different methods of measuring fitness

Lesson Aims/Objectives:

Students can identify fitness tests that relate to their own sports/activities
Students can show evidence on how to complete various tests

Explain what 21st Century Skills are Students Using or Developing?

Critical Thinking:

Thinking about what sports/physical activities

students participate in
Thinking about what aspects of fitness are worth
assessing for themselves
Linking prior learning from science (testing
hypothesis)

Communication:

Communicating with group members/teacher

Sharing answers with class/groups

Creating:

Create of information sheet about various fitness

tests

Collaboration:

Working in groups to research and develop

information sheets

What level of SAMR (Substitution/Augmentation/Modification/Redefinition) Model does this

lesson focus on?

Substitution:
o Using heart rate monitors during initial introduction to observe heart rate rather then manually
calculating
o Using computers for research and word processing of documents
Modification:
o Using Polar Team Indoor app on iPad to monitor whole class heart rate at once

Essential Vocabulary:

Test Criteria
Environmental Factors
Protocol
Aerobic

Other Materials Needed:

Heart Rate Monitors

iPad with Polar Team Pro
Projector
Computers

Introduction/Engagement/Hook:
Introduction 5 Minute Fitness Tests
Initial test Resting Heart Rate
o Hand out students a heart rate monitor each and instruct them to place it on their chest and find a
comfortable space in the room, either on the floor or in their seats (ideally, heart rate monitors should
already be setup in app)
o Using HRMs, students are to rest still for 5 minutes to record their resting heart rate
o Use Polar Team App to monitor student HR
1-Minute Push-Up Test
o Instruct students to find a space in the room, may have to move tables to make space for all students
o Students are to assume the push up position and complete as many push ups as possible in 1 minute
Students should record results
1-Minute Burpee Test
o After completing the push up test, allow students to rest for a minute or two
o Students are now to compete as many burpees as possible in 1 minute
o Students should record their results
1-Minute Sit-Up Test
o After completing the burpee test, allow students to rest for a minute or two
o Students are now to compete as many sit-ups as possible in 1 minute
o Students should record their results
Wrap Up
o Ask students about what they just did & why
o What was the purpose of completing the tests and what do the results tell them?
o Key question Do these fitness tests accurately show if you are fit? Why? Explain

comparison results of tests

Lesson Outline/List of Activities:

Brainstorm - We can tests fitness in different ways
Students to ask themselves the questions:
o What aspects of fitness do I want to measure?
o How can I measure these aspects?
o What results should I be looking for?
Brainstorm on board various ideas students have about fitness testing, whether anyone has been tested or
knows about tests
This lesson is a reflective lesson for students to consider what fitness tests could work for them
PowerPoint Presentation
Fitness Testing PP1
Key Questions students should consider:
o How does this relate to me?
o How can I use this information?
o What other areas of fitness testing can I use?
o What are appropriate fitness tests to use?
Students should write down key questions as they come to mind for elaboration and research

Lesson Closure Activities

Task
Students are to research different fitness tests that they can use in the following class
These tests should relate to the areas of fitness they plan on improving during the assessment
Students can work in small groups and should come up with three tests they would like to conduct
Students are to write up an information sheet that covers:
o What the test is
o What its aim is to test
o What equipment the test uses

Year 10 PE/Science
Fitness & Training Programs

o The procedure
o The advantages of the test
o The disadvantages of the test
o What sports it can be used in
The information sheet should include enough detail that students can hand them to a random student and
that student can conduct the test

Modifications:

Students without a strong fitness/physical activity

background can help with conducting initial
testing and collect scores/monitor heart rates
Students without a strong fitness/physical activity
background can research ways to test their
fitness that are not as invasive/can be completed
easily for them

Enrichment:

If students have history of completing fitness

tests, they can share these with the class and
their feelings towards them
Students can research various athletes they
admire to see their results from similar/same
tests

Evaluation of Student Learning:

o Students should show personal reflection during the lesson on what fitness tests they would like to conduct
on themselves and how these relate to their sport
o Completion of fitness test information sheet
