Question 1
a) Find the Resultant of Forces A,B and C, given that Force A, 10 N acting horizontally to the
right; Force B, 8N inclined at 60o to force A; Force C, 12N inclined at 140o to force A.
(8 marks)
b) A metal wire is 3mm in diameter and 2m long. A force of 14N is applied to it and
stretches 0.4 mm. Assume the material is elastic, determine the stress in the wire and the
strain in wire.
[6marks]
c) Calculate the pressure and the force on an inspection hatch 0.55 m diameter located on
the bottom of the tank when it is filled with sea water of density 1024kg/m3 to a depth of
9m.

Question 2
a) (i) With the aid of a labelled heating curve show the stages involved when 500g of
ice initially at -20o C, is turned into steam at 105o C.
(5 marks)
(ii)Calculate the total amount of energy for this process.
(8 marks)
b) A brass ring is 800mm long and has a diameter of 100mm. It is heated from 10
degrees Celsius to 90 degrees Celsius. Calculate the change in length. (= 18 x 10-6)
(6 marks)
c) Air in a vessel has a pressure of 35bars, volume 0.3m3 and temperature 15 0C. It is
connected to another empty vessel so that the volume increases to 0.7m3, but the
temperature stays the same. Taking R= 287 J/Kg K. Calculate the final pressure and the
final density.
