Sport Pedagogy Lesson Plan Template (Elementary and Middle School)

Background Information
Teacher: Cassidy Gustafson
Date: October 5, 2016
School: Cleveland Elementary
Grade Level: 2nd
Lesson Focus: Movement Concepts, Locomotor Movement , Racing

# Of students: 16
Equipment and Facilities:
24 Polyspots (4 rows of 6)
4 Big Cones (boundaries)
10 Dome Cones (finish line)

Safety Considerations: Potential Wet Grass.

Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies:
Three Strike System:
1. Warning
2. Sit out for 5 Minutes with Ren
3. Sent to Ms. Monique for the rest of the period.
Previously Learned Skills: Hopping, Jumping, Running (Through Obstacles)
Teaching Strategy: Direct Instruction.
Academic Language:
Students will be able to develop a general knowledge of personal space and space management in attempt
to work around a smaller space. Students will be developing the idea of agility and incorporate all the
locomotor skills they have learned over the past week. Students will apply locomotor skills in a race to
finish the race
Student Objectives:
1. To transition from a locomotor skill into a run efficiently (agility).
2. Recall and recite the cues of the skill for locomotor movements.
3. To still be able to break down each skill from a fundamental standpoint, opposed to rushing
through the obstacle.

Psychomotor (P): Students will be able to finalize their skill level by breaking each skill down and
applying it to a race.
Cognitive (C): Students will be able to recite to me how to perform a each locomotor skill as an exit ticket
out of the class for the day.
H-R Fitness (H): Students will be able to reach at least 50% MVPA in duration of the class, going towards
the recommended amount of physical activity a week.

CALIFORNIA PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODEL CONTENT STANDARDS:

Demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.

Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to the learning
and performance of physical activities.

Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.

NASPE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS a physically literate person:

Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.
Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
Demonstrates the knowledge skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity
and fitness.
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self- expression, and/or social interaction.

Students will line up on a baseline where they will be following traffic lights correlated with fundamental
locomotor skills. Red = Stop, Yellow = Walk, and Green = Run. Students who dont follow protocol (and or
cheat), will be subjected to active punishment, including jumping jacks or push ups. The object of the game
isnt to be first down the line, but to be able to appropriately perform each skill at its designated time.
2 Minutes
Transition
Students will return to their polyspots in the formation, where we will discuss the activity set for the day.
Set Induction 3 Minutes
Today will be our last day of locomotor skill development, and I expect nothing but the best from you!
Dont worry, we are almost done! We will be breaking up into groups. Each row represents a different
locomotor skill. After each group goes through each line (2 minutes each), we will end the day in a race.
Heres the deal. After you race, you are not allowed to leave class until you tell me 1 locomotor skill, and
the cues of the skill on how to do it..
Lets split up!
Students will be broken up into 4 groups, and will start in their designated stations.

Purpose:
Students will master their level of locomotor skills, and apply them in competition.
Start/Stop Signals: Hand up in the air to count down (this makes students put hands up and have
eyes on me by the time I count down to one).
Grouping Strategies: Random selection (counting down the line).
National Standards:
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety
of physical activities.
Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and
performance.
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self- expression, and/or social
interaction.
Transition: Students will move into their designated lines.

Lesson Core - Task 1: 10 Minutes:

Students are to use their lines to enhance their development and master the skill of locomotor movement.
Once each group goes through each line, we will move into task 2.
Demonstration Plan:
I will have one student per locomotor skill demonstrate (4 students total).
Questions to Check Understanding
1. What locomotor skills did we go over today?
2. Name one locomotor skill, and how do you do it?
3. Someone come up here and show and explain each locomotor skill.

Common Errors Task 1:

1. Not paying attention to each cue.
2. Moving too fast to really perform the skill
Lesson Core - Task 2: 4 Minutes:
Race time! Students will be put into two lines where they will do a locomotor skill on the polyspots, then
run for the finish.

CLOSURE:2 Minutes
Bring everyone back and ask them to put polyspots away. Students will be asked to demonstrate and tell me
one skill they learned and why they liked it.

Review:
Can someone demonstrate what they learned? Good!
I am excited that everyone had a good time, and I am looking forward to next week.
Lets line up!
