Procedure

We are learning about: Different ways people celebrate their national holiday. Today we will be
learning about Australian Day and Independence Day.
We are learning to: Understand the importance and the history of these days in these particular
countries history.
Students will have completed the independent learning activity
Students have participated in discussion, and shared prior knowledge with class- Teacher to
observe, and use open questions, to create conversation and discussion.

Teacher to prompt discussion on unit, asking open questions about why, how and what people

celebrate. Teacher to record responses on the whiteboard for future reference. Learning
experiences will increase this knowledge by providing students with interactive and engaging
activities based around this unit theme.
Students will be given a choice on what they would like to write about as it is a personal

reflection.
Students will be given a choice of what celebration they may choose to research for their

presentation.
Engagement: When students enter the room at the beginning of the lesson, the classroom will be
decorated in different themed celebrations, with international flags, Christmas decorations and
different colours. The lesson will begin with questions to the class on why they think the classroom is
decorated and begin the discussion of celebrations based on what students already know.
Learning experiences:

After initial class discussion about what students already know about why we celebrate,
show two videos played on the IWB, pausing to discuss in between each video on two
countries Australia and the United States on their national holiday the 4 th of July and the 26th
of January.
Teacher to distribute short information sheets on these two traditions. This is to be used for
information for assessment task. Discuss initial assessment task on PowerPoint
presentation on an international celebration.
Teacher to demonstrate My Family Tradition Task on whiteboard. Use an example like:
My family celebrate Australia Day especially because it is also my Husbands
birthday and we always have a big party with our family and friends.
Students to move to desks, and complete task on My Family Tradition they are to write a
short paragraph on what they like to celebrate and why, accompanied by a picture.
Students to share these with the class during reflection time.

Classroom organisation: Students will begin class by sitting in front of the IWB in order to view the
videos. Class discussion will take place on the mat, so teacher can access board to write down any
ideas provided by students.
