Create Your Own Political Party

Each group will build a political party platform reflecting a distinct political
philosophy for a federal election. You will complete each of the following tasks for
our class election day. You have been given a date next to each task that tells you
when you should have that portion of the project complete to be checked. Please
plan accordingly to be sure the task is completed by the time noted.

Task #1 due 10/19

You and your group must formulate policies on the following issues (See topic
questions at the end to help you form your policies):
1. Education
2. Defense
3. Jobs
4. Foreign affairs
5. Current events
Task #2 due 10/20
Write an explanation of where your party fits on the political spectrum (at least a
paragraph). Outline how your partys ideas fit the characteristics of one of the
placements (left-wing, middle, and right-wing). Draw a political spectrum and show
your partys placement by labeling it on the spectrum.
Task #3 due 10/20
Choose a name and create a logo for your party reflecting your platform and
policies.
Task#4 due 10/21
Create a party leader to run for US Senator. Give your leader a name, gender, age,
education, work experience, and political experience. You should attempt to create
a leader that voters would want to elect. Provide a detailed explanation of why this
person was chosen to lead the party (200 words). Choose one of your group
members to act as the US Senator.
Task #5 due 10/21
Create a campaign poster that includes the name of the party, candidate, partys
logo and party slogan.
Task #6 due 10/24
Create a Radio OR Television commercial that creatively outlines your candidate and
partys platform. Prepare a script or a storyboard to help you on your recording.
Resources necessary for the task can be found in the library with Ms. James. (4060 seconds)

Task #7 due 10/24

Write an election speech to be delivered on Election Day. (Maximum 5 minutes)
Must also be submitted in written form. Use the organizer on writing speeches to
help you with creating yours.
Task #8 due 10/25
Create a Campaign flyer or brochure that includes s the party name, candidate,
logo, slogan and a brief summary of partys platform. If you would like, I will copy
your flyer so you can hand them out on Election Day.
Task #9 due 10/25
Research the role of a press secretary. Choose a press secretary to introduce your
candidate on Election Day. Your press secretary should be prepared to give the
candidates background information to the class. The press secretary should
create a list of anticipated questions that might be asked of the candidate to help
prepare them.

Election Day is 10/26 & 10/27

Each political party will present their campaign products in the Community Room to
our class and others - give platform, spectrum, logo, leader, poster, radio/video
commercial, speech, flyers or brochures. After presentations the audience will ask
important questions and vote for a winner. You cannot vote on your own party.
Here are some questions to help clear things up for you as you complete the
assignment. First, leave nothing unanswered. Check your work and if you can ask why
to one of your statements or if it sounds unclear, fix it and explain yourself in full.
Try to address the points I will give you but also put your own thoughts and spins on
the listed topics.
1. Education: A.) what changes, if any, would you make to the education
system? B.) How would you address school safety based on events like
Columbine, etc.? C.) Would you base financial aid on need or ability of the
student to succeed? D.) How would you help students that want to go to
college but could not afford tuition?
2. Defense: A.) What do you think about the military draft? B.) Should we
spend more or less on our defense budget? C.) How would you protect the
nation in the ace of internal terrorism attacks? D.) How does immigration
figure into the equation?
3. Jobs: A.) What are your feelings on the current minimum wage? B.) What
are you feelings on the job starting age? C.) Do we need better training
for workers or more overall jobs? D.) How do you feel about
immigrants/illegal aliens in this area? E.) What are your feelings on
companies in the United States moving to other countries?
4. Foreign Affairs: A.) What should our role be in foreign affairs/civil wars
(other nations)? B.) How should we deal with the United Nations? C.) How
should we address the Middle East and the gas crisis in our country?
5. Current Events: Address two or more of these points: the death penalty,
abortion, gun control, healthcare, illegal immigration or the environment.
