Punching shearing resistance coefficient for a granular platform material, Kptan, is a function of the value of d as shown in
Table A2 and Figure A4 on next page.
The design value of the bearing capacity factor N for a granular material is a function of the design value of the angle of
shearing resistance d as shown in Table A1 and Figure A2 on next page.

Minimum acceptable thickness of cover to the geosynthetic reinforcement is 300 mm, therefore if D1& D2 above are <0.300
provide 300mm thick nominal working platform.
FINAL CHECK
Design thickness of platform should satisfy the following conditions:
if effect of reinforcement is ignored, both q1D and q2D must be < R1D and R2D respectively, where:
1q=1.25

Loadcase 2 factor
2q=1.05

DESIGN SUMMARY
With geosynthetic reinforcement D = 0.483m is required.
Without geosynthetic reinforcement D = 0.583m is required.
Class 6F2 platform material is acceptable, as long as unit weight() and angle of shearing resitance( are corresponding the
values assumed in this calculation.
Platform material must be placed in layers of maximum 300mm and suitably compacted. A minimum 15% CBR ratio must be
achieved on top of the working platform, to be confirmed with plant supplier.
Platform to be maintained to a reasonable condition during the construction period. Any weak area to be excavated, backfilled
with platform fill material and compacted. Platform should be inspected at regular intervals, particularly after heavy rain.
Provisions should be made for localized drainage measures if required.

(Positional tolerances of some piles cannot be maintained using platform material with particles as large as 150 mm and in such
cases a smaller maximum particle size of, say, 75 mm is required.)
In many cases a well graded material, ie D60/D10 > 6, provides a better platform well graded material can be compacted,
resists spragging damage caused by movement of heavy rigs and resists the ingress of fines more effectively than single size
material. For some works however, such as installation of vibro stone columns, a heavily compacted platform can cause
difficulties. In some cases therefore, a single size material may be adequate or more appropriate.
Wherever possible, the granular material should be well compacted. However, in some circumstances, such as placing the
platform on a very soft cohesive subgrade, heavy compaction may not be practicable.
Some guidance is given in Table B2, in general terms, on the suitability of a number of commonly available materials.
Table B2 Suitability of materials for a plant working platform
Material
Suitability
Natural gravel
Quarry waste
Concrete rubble
Brick rubble
Slag
Colliery spoil
Can be very variable and often contains excessive fines. Drainage may
be inadequate in wet conditions
For the design calculations it is necessary to select an appropriate characteristic value of , the angle of shearing resistance.
The characteristic value of a soil strength parameter should be a cautious estimate of the field strength. A material with a
characteristic value of < 35 is unlikely to provide an economic and technically adequate working platform.

Selection of characteristic value of where laboratory testing of platform material is not practicable
Ideally the selection of a characteristic value of will be based on appropriate laboratory testing of the platform material as.
However, it is recognised that in many situations this will not be practicable. Some typical characteristic values of are
presented in this section, but it should be recognised that considerable experience is required in the exercise of engineering
judgement which this approach of necessity involves. A greater degree of caution is required in selecting a characteristic value
of where no test data are available for the strength of the platform material.

Table B3 gives an indication of typical characteristic values for for granular platform material in connection with the design of
a working platform as described in this guide. Table B3 is based on two parameters: the density of the fill and the strength
of the source or parent material (qc is the unconfined compressive strength of the parent material).

An indication of the typical strengths of various types of source material is given in Table B4. The ranges of strength for various
rock types have been largely based on data for natural building stones from the British Isles contained in Appendix C of
