Workshop Overview
The management of food allergy reactions: their diagnosis, their treatment and their prevention is increasingly the
centre of attention of a number of public health agencies, the clinical community, food regulators, the food industry
and consumer organizations at the global level.
Over the last 20 years, several actions have been taken by these various players with the aim to enhance the
protection of food allergic consumers. Food recall statistics continue to show that food allergens are high on the list
of food hazards to which these recalls are attributed.
The Asia Pacific region has witnessed major changes in the way food allergens, as an emerging food safety hazard,
are being subjected to control measures. Several Asia-Pacific countries have developed legislative and regulatory
measures to upgrade allergen labelling requirements. Similarly, food processors have enhanced their food control
practices to allow identification and management of priority allergens across the entire food supply chain.
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Safety Cooperation Forum identified Food Allergen Management
as a priority for food safety capacity building in 2013 and 2015. The Forum directed its members to work towards the
following objectives:
- to build regulatory convergence associated with labelling of priority allergens,
- to raise awareness of good (allergen management-related) manufacturing processes
- to build competencies in laboratory analysis of priority allergens for both industry and government oversight
- to share and align responses to improper labelling and poor manufacturing processes associated with food allergens

Why Attend
This first edition of this workshop aims to gather food regulators, food industry representatives, representatives of
the clinical community and service providers from the region. Specific emphasis will be made to enhance the
representation from China, with intent to continue raising awareness and to contribute to dissemination efforts of
best practices related to food allergen management.
