Tool Handling
The following section describes the equipment and procedures required to handle the various subs
and modules which make up the 4-3/4 AutoTrak G3 tool.
The picking up and laying down of the component subs is a sensitive process and it is imperative
that an INTEQ FSE is present on the rig floor as this is being done.

Picking up BHA components

As a general rule the tool should arrive at the rigsite with as many components made up as
possible in order to reduce the required lifting operations to a minimum.
The tool can be picked up in the same way as the larger tool sizes, the preferred method being to
tail in the tool using a T2 elevator sub and crane. Attention must be given to the placement of
slings etc: Never place wire slings on the Non-Rotating sleeve, BCPM electronic sleeve or on the
OnTrak antennas.
Individual components of the BHA can also be picked up using the 3-1/2 T2 lift sub and tugger
lines. Please note however that these lift caps are not to be used to take the weight of the entire
tool, use the T2 elevator sub instead.
Note:

3-1/2 IF lift subs and lift caps must not be used with the T2 connection. Make sure you
have T2 lift subs (p/n 10115757) and lift caps (p/n 10115756) in your surface kit.

The T2 Modular Connection

The 4-3/4 T2 thread is an improved modular connection, designed to be more robust than its
predecessor, the NC46 modular connection. The new connection is designed to allow rotation
through 15/30m doglegs. Due to its modular design, special 4-3/4 T2 Lift Subs and Elevator
Subs are required and provided with the Surface Equipment.
The 4 modular subs of the AutoTrak BHA (BCPM, Modular Stabiliser, OnTrak Sensor Sub and
Steering Unit) are connected by T2 modular connections, similar, but not identical to the old style
modular connections. The tool will normally be shipped in two sections so at least one T2
connection must be made up on the drill floor.
As with the old style modular connections pipe dope must not be used as a thread lubricant.
Instead CF-33 lubricant must be used.
Note that the brush used for applying the CF-33 lubricant to the threads should not then be used
to apply CF-33 to the M30 ring. Instead it is recommended to use a different brush as conductive
debris (i.e. metal flakes) on the thread could be carried over to the modular M30 ring and create a
short circuit when making up the connection.
Making up of the T2 connection is broadly similar to the original M 30 modular connection,
however there are some important differences. On the T2 Pin, instead of the three part Lende seal
system, a two-part seal system consisting of a Teflon Stop Ring and an O-Ring is utilised.

Makeup and Breakout

This section provides guidance on the placement of tongs, slips and dog-collars with appropriate
makeup torque for each component of the system.
Because of the short length of the Steering Units bit box (123 mm) making up the bit can prove
problematic. Care must be taken at all times to keep the tong dies away from the lower seals, so it
may be necessary to place the makeup tong so far down the bit box that it is in contact with the
rotary table.
Bit breakers can also cause a problem as their handles can get in the way of tong placement. For
bit breakers with straight handles it may be possible to turn the breaker upside down thus
providing enough clearance to engage the tong. If turning the bit breaker upside down is not
possible (e.g. the handles are angled) then the handles must be cut / ground off in order to provide
tong access.
Do not put slips, tongs or dog-collars on the Steering Unit bearings, ribs and hydraulics.
Do not torque or break the connection between the Steering Unit and Control Sub or the
connection between the Control Sub and the Turbine Housing Stabilizer. These connections are
NOT field serviceable.
Always maintain communication with the driller and make sure the pin end is lowered slowly so
as to avoid collisions between the pin and the shoulder of the box connection. If such a collision
occurs this may damage the M 30 ring on the box connection. A stabbing guide should be
included in the surface kit to prevent such pin / shoulder contact.
Always use chain tongs to screw together modular connections. Pipe Spinners / Iron Roughnecks
may damage connections. Similarly, make up torque must be applied by using tongs.
Never make up the bit to the Steering Unit unless the rest of the tool has been made up and
torqued. Applying make up torque to the steering unit without the rest of the tool attached can
cause the drive shaft to crack and thus cause premature tool failure.

Steering Unit
The steering unit of the 4-3/4 ATKG3 consists of 3 sections:

Non-Rotating Steering Sleeve,

Control Sub and

Turbine Housing with Stabiliser.

Due to its compact nature, there is little room on the steering unit for tongs, slips and dog-collars.
The diagram below summarises the correct placement of rig floor equipment for making up /
breaking up the bit, and for making up / breaking off the steering unit from the OnTrak or
Modular Motor.

Bit make up
Due to the short nature of the lower drive sub on the 4-3/4" Steering Unit it can sometimes be
quite difficult to make up the bit, especially with larger style rig tongs.
As care must be taken at all times to keep the rig tongs from contacting the lower Kalsi seals it
may be necessary to remove all handles from the bit breaker and / or turn the bit breaker upside
down. Even with this done however it will still sometimes be necessary to place the rig tongs in
contact with the rotary table in order to keep the tong dies clear of the seals.
As this is unsatisfactory two different solutions have been implemented to overcome this.

Use of the bit tool:

An alternate approach to the use cutting off bit breaker handles etc is to use the bit tool.
This tool is manufactured by INTEQ (part number 10171916) and is designed to slot into the
cutouts on the lower drive shaft and prevents the tongs from crushing the Kalsi seals by
completely covering the lower seal.

Instructions for use

Pull out the bricks from the body of the tool and pull the tool over the bottom of the steering
unit so as that the cutout slots on the lower drive sub marry up with the bricks.
Slide in the bricks, ensuring that they slot into the cutouts on the lower drive shaft.
Make up the bit and place the assembly in the rotary table as normal.
Attach the make up tong to the bit tool and apply make up torque as normal.
To remove the bit tool simply pull out the bricks and lower the bit tool over the lower drive
shaft and the bit. Any bit used on the 4 ATK will pass through the bit tool with the bricks in
the out position.

Use of smaller 3rd party tongs:

In several areas use has been made of a smaller, K 50, tubing tong, this tong is small enough so as
to not contact the tool above the upper shoulder of the lower drive shaft. Note that in some
operating areas of the world HS&E regulations may arise with regards to equipment certification
etc and that some drilling contactors may not allow the use of 3rd party rig equipment.

If it is decided to use these tongs then they must be sourced and certified locally.
