September, 2016. Left side is Ag. Director of Economic Statistics Joy Sawe

TANZANIA'S
Gross
Domestic Product (GDP)
advanced 7.9 percent year-onyear in the second quarter
(April - June) of 2016
compared to the growth of 5.8
percent recorded in the
corresponding period a year
before.

the National Bureau of

Statistics (NBS), Dr. Albina
Chuwa, said the growth was
attributed to increased
economic activities in key
sectors such as agriculture,

and
electricity.

Addressing reporters in Dar es

second quarter of GDP of
April to June 2016 has
recorded the growth of 7.9--

percent compared to the

growth of 5.8 percent
recorded in the same period
last year.
The growth was attributed to
increased
economic
activities which put the
countrys GDP at constant
prices in absolute terms for
the period at Tsh11.7 trillion
compared to Tsh10.9 trillion
of last year, said Dr.
Chuwa.
Dr. Chuwa said the projected

annual GDP at constant prices is
estimated at Tsh47.2 trillion in
2016, up from the actual Tsh44.1
trillion in 2015 while the second
quarter GDP at current prices for
2016 in absolute terms was
Tsh26.7 trillion compared to
Tsh23 trillion attained in the
same quarter last year.
Dr. Chuwa noted that the annual
GDP at current prices is
estimated at Tsh104.4 trillion

growth was mainly due to an
increase in production of
natural
gas,
diamond,
Tanzanite, salt, gold, copper
and silver.
The review also indicates that
manufacturing grew 9.1
percent compared to 5.2
percent last year due to the
expansion of production of
food, beverage, tobacco,
textiles, cement, printing,
chemicals
and
pharmaceuticals, basic metals
and furniture products.

Growth in the agriculture sector

was due to favourable rainfall for
crop production in most areas
and improvement of extension
services provided to farmers
during the period under review.

Furthermore, GDP growth was

attributed to expansion in the
electricity
sector
which
advanced
7.1
percent,
construction grew 9 percent,
wholesale and retail trade,
repair of motor vehicles,
motorcycles, personal and
household goods grew 5.2
percent, transportation and
storage 30.6 percent and
accommodation and food
services advanced 2.5 percent
during the period under
review.

Not only that but also mining and

quarrying activities expanded to
20.5 percent in the second
quarter of 2016 compared to 11.2
percent recorded in the similar
period a year before; and the --

Other sectors boosting GDP

growth
were
financial
intermediation and insurance
which grew 12.5 percent,
public administration and
defence advanced 7.3 percent,

education grew 8 percent,

health upped 5.7 percent,
recreation 6.9 percent as well
as activities of households as
employer which grew 3.1
percent.
The quarterly GDP is
measured as the value of goods
and services produced by
residents in three-month
periods of January-March,
April-June, July-September
and October-December.

to increased economic
activities which put the

bringing HIV related services
including free testing for HIV

Among other things,

the survey will estimate
the burden caused by

same time, the enumerators
must treat the information they
