I am an engaging and dedicated early childhood educator who believes in the
importance of being a life-long learner. My teaching style focuses on creating a dynamic
learning environment that promotes respect, collaboration, and independence by using handson experiences and differentiated instruction. Through these processes, each student develops
holistically, providing the student with a basic set of skills that the student will build upon
through his or her learning journey. I believe that my teaching style and philosophy allow me
to instill a love of learning in each student, as he or she becomes creative, caring, and selfmotivated. Teaching in Dubai has helped me discover how personally and professionally
enriching it can be to live and work internationally. By experiencing different cultures and
traditions, I have been able to assist my students in becoming agents of change in a global
community.
My time at the American School of Dubai has taught me the importance of effective
collaboration with colleagues. As part of the Kindergarten team, I have worked closely with
others educators to maintain grade level continuity and develop the use of best practices in
the classroom. Over the past five years, I have met with colleagues on improving and
adapting curricula through Rubicon Atlas, resulting in scaffolded learning sequences and
stronger cross-curricular links through creative and engaging lessons meeting the adopted
standards of learning for my school. I have gained many valuable experiences from fully
implementing Readers and Writers Workshop, conferring with students, using ongoing
anecdotal notes, running flexible guided reading groups, and employing large and small
groups for phonics instruction using Words Their Way and Fountas and Pinnell. By utilizing
Developmental Reading Assessments and continua developed by Bonnie Campbell Hill to
check student progress, I have been able to set informed, aspirational goals and expectations.
Drawing on multiple resources during my mathematics instruction, such as Everyday Math,
Growing With Math, Marilyn Burns, Kathy Richardson, and Van de Walle, lessons are
varied and personalized. In Science and Social Studies, I utilize well-structured, inquirybased tasks to help students to construct theories and learn through meaningful selfexploration. Integrating appropriate technology in the classroom is a key component in my
teaching. I use software and online resources such as Dreambox, Google Apps, and iPods and
iPads to support learning and to prepare my students to be 21st Century learners. I use
anecdotal records, formative assessments, and peer and self-assessments to adapt to the needs
of individual students, instilling self-motivation and the ability to be reflective as my students
learn new concepts.
I am passionate about giving students opportunities to take risks and make mistakes
through play and inquiry-based tasks. I am looking forward to establishing and developing
the initiative, Loose Parts, into our Kindergarten playground. Providing children a space to
create and build without limitations will promote 21st Century thinker skills, such as
ingenuity and collaboration, within all young students. By promoting higher order thinking
skills through lessons and experiences, students become critical thinkers and contributors in

and out of the classroom.

With the ever-changing teaching and learning theories and practices, I feel it is very
important to invest my time and efforts in continual professional development. Over the past
two years, I have attended conferences, workshops, and a wide variety of professional
development classesthe most notable being Teachers College for Readers and Writers
Workshop at Columbia University, New York. I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in
teacher leadership in international schools from the University of Northern Iowa. By
furthering my learning through professional development and continued coursework, I hope
to ensure my students are provided with the best instruction possible.
A students education is not limited to the content delivered by a teacher, but is a
representation of his or her experiences both inside and out of the classroom, therefore, I
believe it is important as a teacher to be a suitable role model at all times and to be actively
involved in the wider school community. At the American School of Dubai, I participate by
coaching the swim team, co-sponsoring the elementary school environmental group and
sailing club, and acting as the grade level Numeracy and Literacy Lead Teacher. As grade
level Numeracy and Literacy Lead Teacher, I have researched, organized, and developed
common assessments and learning opportunities for the grade level mathematics and literacy
standards. These leadership positions have provided me with the opportunity to collaborate
with my colleagues and better understand best practices in mathematics and literacy. Through
sponsoring extra-curricular activities I have assimilated more fully in to our school
community by meeting regularly with parents, teachers, and support staff campus-wide. I
most recently led a group of twelve high school students to Medan, Indonesia to build houses
for Habitat for Humanity. Through initiatives like this, I have become an ambassador for our
school within the wider community. Modeling and promoting global awareness and effective
community building is something that I value as an educator.
While my time in the United Arab Emirates has been life-changing, I am seeking the
opportunity to demonstrate my talents as a knowledgeable, hardworking educator in a new
cultural environment. I believe I possess the requisite professional development, international
experience, and commitment to using best practices to be a valuable asset to your institution.
In short, I believe I possess the tools to create a positive learning environment for all students
at your institution, and welcome the opportunity to discuss my ideas and qualifications, about
which I am truly passionate, at your earliest convenience.
This application is accompanied by a letter of introduction form my husband, Mr. Timothy
Gilliatt, a qualified high school science teacher. We would like to be considered as a teaching
couple.
Thank you for your consideration
Yours Sincerely,
Louisa Waring
