Last week my husband and I were discussing building a new
home. We enjoy the farmhouse we currently own but he certainly
cant set up a man cave in our leaky stone basement and I admit
Id like a better setup for the dogs. We talked about other conveniences our new home should have and my husband stated I
would need a walk in freezer for the dogs. I laughed at that but
he told me he was serious: he felt this was something I needed.
Ironically, we had this discussion in the kitchen. Not our kitchen - the dogs kitchen. Thats right. Complete with a new fridge
and freezer and all the amenities with oodles of cupboard space
for my herbs, supplements, bowls and endless supply of dog
towels.

Adjacent to the dogs kitchen is the mud room. More precisely,

the dogs mud room. Its just off the wrap around deck, complete
with comfy Kuranda beds, a pile of discarded and half chewed
deer legs, toys and water bowls.

Off the kitchen (our kitchen) is the dogs bedroom. Its a nice
place complete with a hand carved day bed with an extra mattress underneath so their elbows never have to meet the hard
slate floors.

In the garage are three chest freezers. Now its clear why my
husband wants me to have a walk in freezer - Im taking up too
much real estate in his garage. Inside those freezers is my pride
and joy! Their contents include:
A nice rabbit that my husband hit on the road and brought
home for the dogs.

All sorts of deer parts. I spent an entire weekend wading up

to my knees in discarded deer heads, guts and bones. The guys
working at the abattoir must have thought I was a demented
hillbilly as I rummaged through the pile and yelled woohoo
whenever I found an especially meaty rack of ribs.

The best part is that I go to gather the deer parts in The Dogmobile. Do you have one of these? I have a spotless Element for
going into the city but if Im honest with myself, my preferred
ride is my twelve year old Caravan. This is the magical chariot
that carries the dogs and me to the trails and, after over a decade of wet muddy dogs riding in the back, that van looks and
smells like a giant wet fart on wheels. My friends and relatives
wont even get in it, which is just as well because the seat belts
no longer work - theyre all stuffed with dog hair.
I dont know at what point I crossed the line between dog
owner and crazy dog lady. It might have been the day I discovered that green tripe really didnt smell all that bad. The point
is however, that I crossed it. But the view from this side isnt all
that bad.

For example, I might have been horrified to be

seen rummaging through dead animal parts a few
short years ago. At the very least, I would have worn
gloves!
But my dogs have taught me a thing or two about
humility and practicality. Theyre not too proud to
eat what the hunters left behind and I think we can
all feel good when we ensure no parts of the deer are
wasted. Nature abhors waste.

It wasnt until recently that I didnt feel self conscious driving into town in my Dogmobile. Now I
enjoy it immensely! Seriously, I can take the dogs for
a run, the garbage to the dump and then go get groceries all in one trip! My dogs dont care how they get
delivered to the trails - the point is just getting there.
The vehicle is merely a small detail and has no bearing on the ultimate goal: enjoying ourselves!
Ive made a lot of changes in my life on behalf of
my dogs, not the least of which is greatly lowering
my standards. Its humbling driving to town in my
rusted out stink bomb of a van with six large dogs all
jostling to sit in the passenger seat at one time.

Overall however, I dont think Ive become a crazy

dog lady at all. Thanks to my dogs, I like to call myself a got-a-healthy-perspective-on-whats-really-important-in-life lady. Yeah - lets go with that!

Silvano Razo Packed with healthy goodness

Some time back I emailed you about including an article about

the risks of early neutering. You told me then that it was difficult to get a vet to write that kind of article. Then, your next
issue included an article about it written by you! Thank you so
much. I have printed it out and include it in my puppy packet
which has gotten to be book length. Im sure you read the latest
study that was published a few weeks ago. The one with the
7500 Golden Retrievers? The results were even more staggering.
What I appreciated most about the new study was the testing of
later neutered dogs as well as the early ones. When I told my vet
about the new study, (a very mainstream guy), he admitted that
he found the older, unneutered dogs to be in better shape than
the neutered ones. In all ways, he said - teeth, hair, eyes, bones,
etc. And thank you for the titer article that came with my subscription renewal.
I am so glad you are doing this. It makes my life, as an alternative breeder of English Labrador Retrievers, so much easier!! All
the best, Carla

I was reading this months issue column on scabies and am
concerned about the authors recommendation to use Ivermectin. I just read on Dr Karen Beckers website that this drug can
be extremely dangerous. I enjoy educating myself with both of
these resources and it is troublesome when you conflict in recommendations. Thank you, Lydia
Editors Note: Hi Lydia. Dr Khalsa didnt recommend Ivermectin (and we dont endorse it either). She mentions it as a treatment option because most vets will recommend it. Although she
does state that its a quick way to rule out scabies, the article
goes on to provide a homeopathic solution. Basically, the article
lists the most dangerous option and works down to the safest.
We apologize if this has caused any confusion.

K I DNE Y
The FLAME of LIFE
By Chris Bessent DVM

Have you ever wondered why so many older animals seem to suffer with kidney issues? Of all the major
organs - lung, liver, spleen, heart, and kidney - the kidney seems to be so over represented. Logic would say
that there should be an equal representation of all five major organs. For example: one fifth of the senior
animals should pass due to heart conditions, and one fifth of senior animals should pass due to liver issues
and so on. But that doesnt happen. The majority of older geriatric patients seem to develop kidney issues
and it may eventually be the thing that takes them. Why?

hinese medicine has a theory as to the

over representation of kidney issues.
From a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medical (TCVM) perspective, kidney
is considered the flame of life. And as
our animals age, the flame of life tends to
dwindle. When the Qi (pronounced chee)
or energy of the kidney depletes with age,
eventually the organ starts to fail. Hence
the reason so many older animals develop
kidney issues.
From the TCVM prospective, the kidney
is the foundation of life. Kidney Qi is manifest in the hair coat so a dog with a thick
vibrant coat is considered to have good
kidney Qi.
Considering the kidney is the foundation
of health, its to be protected and supplemented throughout life by engaging in activities of life in moderation. Its important
to not deplete the kidney prematurely and
to support it to thrive throughout a long
and healthy life.
The Qi of our animals bodies consists of
a combination of prenatal and postnatal
Qi. Prenatal Qi comes from the kidneys

10

May - June 2013

and is considered our animals genetics,

i.e., what they are born with. Postnatal Qi
comes from the lifestyle our animals lead.
Are they provided with good, healthy food,
moderate exercise and fresh air? Through
the processes of the spleens digestive functions and the lungs oxygenation functions,
postnatal Qi is supplemented daily.
The kidney is the energy to the body. The
digestive functions need good kidney Qi
to warm the gastrointestinal tract so it can
digest food properly. This warmth allows
the conversion of food to post natal Qi.

Marrow
The kidney is also the source of marrow,
which is bone marrow as we view it, but our
brain and spinal cord are also considered
bone marrow. As our animals age, their
marrow depletes, leading to changes in
memory, dizziness, vertigo, dementia and
other diminishing mental capacities. Depletion of spinal cord marrow is certainly seen
in older dogs as weakness to the hind limbs.
The marrow of kidney manufactures
blood and dominates bones. Animals with

chronic kidney failure will also develop anemia from decreased red blood cell production. The kidney is the source for erythropoietin, which is a hormone that stimulates
red blood cell production.
The bones of the aged weaken and
become more brittle. The teeth are also
considered bone in TCVM. Compare the
beautiful white teeth of a young dog to the
teeth of a senior dog. The senior dogs teeth
are less white, almost cream colored, with
some opacity. That is evidence of depletion
of kidney marrow. Loose teeth or poor
quality teeth are also a reflection of the
balance of kidney.

Ruler Of The Mansion

The lower back area is considered the
lumbar mansion and this is where the kidneys are located anatomically. The kidney
is said to rule the lumbar mansion. Lower
back pain and weakness are commonly seen
in the older pet. The kidney is associated
with bones in general and in particular, the
lumbar vertebrae or lower back. Therefore,
deep seated lumbar back pain, weakness

First the obvious question: what causes gas in dogs? Unfortunately, theres not

CRYSTAL HEALING For Pets

By Diane Weinmann
Energy medicine is used to harness the healing power between mind and body, especially for our animal friends. Energy medicine
is based on the belief that an animals body is composed of energy fields. When the energy is properly distributed and circulating
freely, the body is healthy. Imbalances or abnormal amounts of energy are believed to indicate an excess or deficiency and can lead
to dis-ease. Crystals and gemstones are great energy healing tools.

sing crystals for healing has become very popular as a holistic

method for helping to restore wellness in both people and
pets. Many cultures have developed ideas of how to use
crystals in different ways but these remedies all have one thing in
common: they use the power of the stone or crystal to work on
three levels, either spiritually, emotionally or physically, for different types of illnesses to provide assistance into wellness.

Finding Crystals

Crystals can be purchased from holistic wellness centers, metaphysical stores and through the internet and they vary in price depending on the rarity and size of the stone. Many states have areas
where you can mine your own crystals by digging for a particular
type of stone available in the area. The do-it-yourself process is fun
but can be hard, dusty work.

16

May - June 2013

In addition to mining, some states have designated panning

areas where you can pan for stones like men did in the gold rush
era. Panning entails purchasing a bag of dirt and sifting through
the dirt and debris using a tin pan or hand made sift to remove the
unwanted dirt and to uncover the precious gems. Establishments
that provide the tools and dirt for panning usually guarantee different types of gems that can be found in the bag of dirt that youve
purchased.

Clearing Crystals

Crystals must be cleared because most stones will retain negative

energies. Cleaning stones and clearing stones are not the same
thing. Cleaning a stone is getting rid of unwanted dirt or other
substances on the surface of the stone. Cleaning a stone may be
necessary when its first purchased or found.

Do Power Stations & Cell Phones

Affect Canine Behavior?
Are Dogs Harder to Train Than They Used to Be?
If So, Why?
By Lee Charles Kelley

first began noticing strange behavioral

problems in young puppies - the kind Id
never seen or heard of before - about ten
years ago. This was also around the time I first heard some
trainers refer to a puppys lack of attention skills as puppy
ADHD.
In 2011, while speaking to a client about some problems hed
been having with his new Bearded Collie pup, he asked me, in
all earnestness, why I thought his dog had so much energy and
seemed so hard to control. Ive raised quite a few Beardies over
the last 30 years, he said. And I honestly dont remember things
being this difficult.
I suggested that it might be because of the huge proliferation of
electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) in the environment in recent
years. He mulled that over, then said, I think you may be on to something. I swear I can
sometimes feel myself being inundated by all these frequencies.
A few years earlier, Id gotten an email from a client with an overly energetic Jack Russell Terrier. Whenever they went on walks and reached a certain block, the dog would
become highly agitated, as if he were being attacked by some unseen enemy. I asked the
dogs owner if there was a power station nearby. He said there was, but he wondered
how I would have guessed such an odd, unexpected thing. I told him it was just a feeling
I had. Then I suggested he try walking the dog on a different block to see what would
happen. It turned out that the dog only behaved as if he were being attacked when he
came near that power station.
Another client, who lives near a power company substation, told me her dog shows a
maddening inability to settle down inside the apartment, but when the dog stays with a
friend who lives further away, shes as calm and relaxed as can be.
Of course these anecdotes arent proof that EMFs are to blame. However there are
studies showing that power stations, radio towers, and cell phones can cause behavioral
problems and learning deficits in humans and other animals.

Information Overload on a Cellular Level

Research in this area began in 1960 when neurobiologist Allan Frey of Cornell
University became curious about the impact electromagnetic fields might have on the

Life and Death

and everything in between

By Ellen Kohn

Sharing our lives with dogs is one of the greatest gifts enjoyed by mankind. Like multicolored threads of a beautiful shawl, the bond between
dog and man is woven into the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fabric of our lives.

rom joy and laughter to frustration and sadness, our dogs

present the gamut of emotions to us on one giant silver platter. Each dog offers his unique personality to teach us what
we need to learn, at the exact moment we are ready for the lesson.
We enter into an agreement, a spiritual contract, with each dog
that comes across the threshold of our lives. These contracts can come
in the form of a lesson, or a new phase in our lives that unfolds as
we interact with our dogs. Some dogs bring us joy and bliss when
we most need it; others teach us about relationships and emotions,
showing us how to overcome some of our challenges through simple
actions and neutrality. They appear in our lives with perfect timing
to help us work though these lessons, enlightening us with their humor, wisdom and devotion.

Life Lessons

Unconditional love

Our dogs are amazing teachers of unconditional love. The flipside

of loving us in spite of our faults is forgiveness. These two concepts,
paired together, help us realize that our dogs understand our good
intentions, giving us permission to be human. When we make mistakes, they let us know that we can move on, and that they love us
all the same. Balancing unconditional love and forgiveness can be a
human foible.
We know how to give and receive love, especially with our dogs,
but forgiveness can be troublesome. We tend to take ourselves very
seriously and our feelings are easily hurt. When this happens, we
may hold on to our anger, storing it in some hidden place within.

26

May - June 2013

But working with our dogs, we notice that when they growl, bare
their teeth and get angry, they are done. We notice they dont hang
on to a grudge, but move on to the next fun, pleasurable emotion as
soon as possible.

Gratitude

The universe loves gratitude and its quite a simple philosophy.

When we acknowledge some form of daily gratitude, we send out
a vibration into the world that says thank you. In turn, our gratitude reaches others, and they can feel this light coming from us.
Gratitude plugs us into universal consciousness, the oversoul. It is
felt in our energy centers, our chakras, and moves energy out into
the universe.
All dogs are masters of gratitude, for this principle is ingrained in
every cell of their bodies. Whether they are the purest purebred or
the rescued mixed breed, dogs love to show their appreciation for all
that we do. A wag of the tail, a smile, and a wiggle say it all. When
they take to their comfy beds for the night, we know they are truly
relaxed and grateful for a warm place to rest. And that puts a smile
on our faces.

Patience and balance

Some dogs are easy to train and some dogs train us. Living with
dogs might be easier than living with people, but interacting with
them can require patience. We think of training them to do what we
want, such as obedience, agility trials, showing, or just walking on
a leash. Its actually more about cooperation, finding balance, and
figuring out what our dogs like and dislike, and the best way to be
together that works.

Heartworm Prevention
Why monthly preventive drugs are unnecessary
By Peter Dobias DVM

When it comes to talking about parasites

most people cringe - and for good reason.
Parasites are freeloaders; they are like
the guests that come to your house uninvited with no intention of leaving.
But parasites are important from an
evolutionary point of view and play a large
role in the natural selection process. From
a dog lovers point of view however, parasites are nothing more than unwelcome
invaders that threaten the wellbeing and
sometimes the lives of our best friends.
Most people are generally afraid of
parasites and the pharmaceutical industry
has been making hefty profits cashing in
on this fear and making things look worse
than they really are. But our goal should
be to minimize the use of drugs because
no matter what kind they are, they are
foreign to the body and often toxic. No one
can be absolutely certain that down the
road, the drugs will not cause side effects
and affect your animal friends health in
general.
From time to time, I like to check the
facts surrounding various drugs and vaccines to see if they can be reduced and still
achieve the objectives.
Todays topic is heartworm.

HOMEOPATHY
and a case of Lyme disease
By Gina Snow

I live in Central Maine where Lyme disease is far from rare. Happily, all of my dogs have titers for Lyme but had never exhibited any
classic Lyme symptoms - until last year.
That Saturday afternoon was a day like many others. The dogs had
a good time hanging out in the yard and running about. My little girl
Gem had a very good day and played a bit more than usual with a toy
that she really enjoys thrashing about.
The next morning, I got up early to leave the house for a few hours
and discovered that Gem wasnt feeling well. She jumped off the bed
and tried to stretch her back legs and stopped mid stretch. I could
tell that action really hurt her but just assumed her back or neck was
bothering her from the wild day before. I gave her a dose of Arnica
1M and jumped in the shower. When I got out, she was still very
painful and shivering. I then gave her 200C Belladonna for the pain
she was in. Belladonna can be a powerful pain reliever. I got ready to
leave and assumed that Gem would be fine again when I got home. I
gave her one last Belladonna dose and set her up in a room by herself
so she wouldnt do any more jumping about.
When I returned home, about six hours later, Gem was a mess.
She was standing on three legs, shivering and unable to move. She
was in a lot of pain. I took her temperature and found she had a low
grade fever, a degree or two above her normal. She was holding the

didnt know better, I would assume it was broken. With the knowledge of the fever, along with the acute lameness and prior Lyme exposure, I now assumed she was dealing with a Lyme disease flare up.
Based on the symptoms she was exhibiting (fever, pain, lameness
and a desire to stay perfectly still) I decided to start Bryonia 30C.
Bryonia is a great remedy for fevers and the fear of movement from
the pain. Gem had received this remedy in the past, after a routine
spay surgery, and had responded well so it was a good place to start
with such vague symptoms. After dosing, her head got very hot but
she wanted to move just a bit more and seemed to hold the leg a
bit more relaxed although she still wasnt using it. I continued this
remedy through the night, dosing with 30C each time.
By morning, Gem had no real betterment. Her fever remained a
couple of degrees above normal and her pain was still very present,
judging by how she wasnt using the leg at all. The only thing Bryonia
managed to help her with was movement: she was now going outside to do her business and seemed to enjoy the fresh air.
The next day was Labor Day and the veterinary office where I work
was closed so this gave me time to run some tests on Gem. I x-rayed
her knee and hip and found nothing obviously wrong. I suspected
this would be true but felt it should be ruled out. I then ran the

EAT YOUR VEGETABLES!

For centuries, weve all heard it from our mothers or fathers, and theyve heard it from their parents, who
heard from their parents, while sitting at the dinner table. Vegetables are a symbol of health worldwide; an
essential food group that must be added to our plates in order to give us the perception that we are making
healthy choices. For most of us, it works. We feel good knowing that somewhere in our breakfast, lunch, or
dinner there is some kind of fruit or vegetable and, for the rest of the day well have peace of mind knowing
that we did something right.

TISSUE SALTS
for older dogs
By Julie Anne Lee DCH RCSHom and Linda G Miller DCH CCH RSHom(NA)

Tissue salts treat disease by supplying the body with deficient cell salts, the 12 inorganic compounds that make
up the cell, thus assisting the bodys return to healthy functioning. This is based on a system developed by Dr
Schuessler, a German 19th century physician, and the discovery around that time of the constituents of the cell.
Dr Schuessler suggested that the cells of the body contain a balance of water, organic and inorganic constituents.
Both the structure and vital functioning of the body are dependent upon the balance of these constituents, supplied by nature in both plant and animal tissue.

ealthy cells are essential for a healthy body.

Tissue salts can be used to restore balance
to the bodys cells. Although tissue salts are considered very mild and can usually be given with
confidence, as with all homeopathic medicine,
its important to stop using them if symptoms
worsen. Tissue salts can cause an aggravation
or healing crisis although improvement should
occur once the their use is stopped.
While tissue salts are more like a mineral
supplement than a homeopathic potency, they
should be given with care, then discontinued
once healing has taken place.
One of the ways that we like to use tissue
salts for dogs is to use a blend of all 12 salts together, known as Bio 12 to support older dogs
presenting with overall weakness from aging or
from chronic disease like Cushings, hypothyroidism, chronic arthritis and canine geriatric
cognitive disorder. At her veterinary clinic the
protocol has been two doses of Bio 12 twice
daily for one month on, alternating with one
month off, for a duration of six months for
most geriatric dogs.
Things you will notice when giving tissue
salts include:
]A
] decrease in thirst in dogs who are drinking
large amounts
]A
] decrease in either frequency or amount of
urine output if excessive urination
]Increased
]
energy
]Dogs
]
are more aware and less disoriented
]Some
]
clients say, I cant put a finger on it; my
dog just seems better, more like he was before
he got sick or before he started to seem old

The Raw Connection

Carmel, California

Sarah Adams opened The Raw Connection in 2006; how she got there is an
interesting story. Since 1978 shed always had Irish Wolfhounds. By the 1990s,
her Wolfhounds were only living an average of seven years and all were lost
to cancer. Sarah retired from her corporate career and had time to research
why this was happening. After she read Dr. Billinghursts book Give Your Dog
a Bone, she started her seven year old female on a home prepared raw diet.
The dog was slightly overweight, troubled with arthritis, and had little energy.
Within a few months, she lost the weight, the arthritis didnt seem to bother
her, and she was running on the beach like a puppy. She lived to age 11 1/2 and
died of natural causes, with no sign of cancer.
Sarah was hooked on the benefits of a raw diet. She adopted a three year old
Wolfhound who had been fed Ol Roy. She started him on raw immediately,
but lost him at age five to intestinal cancer. Quincy was a very special dog and
Sarah was devastated by his death. She promised herself she would spend the
rest of her life educating people on good nutrition for their pets.
Sarah bought some freezers, became a distributor for Barf World (later adding other raw brands), and started a home delivery business. With no advertising just by attending local events, talking to people on the beach, and word of
mouth she built her business to 200 customers.
In 2006, Sarah couldnt keep up with demand, so she opened The Raw Connection. She had never worked in retail and had no idea what she was getting
herself into. Obviously she did something right, because seven years later, she
is now expanding her store from 1,800 to 7,200 sq. ft.

Metro Pet Market

Regina, Saskatchewan

Sarah uses display freezers so that

customers can easily see the raw diets on
entering the store. Even though she sells
dehydrated, freeze dried, air dried and grain
free diets, raw food is the main focus. Sarah
and her staff will spend as much as an hour
educating a new customer on transitioning their dog or cat. The education doesnt
stop there; they guide customers through
any health issues they encounter, sharing knowledge, resources and educational
material. They also stock supplements,
essential oils and other natural products to
support pets overall health.
When Sarah started her business, very
few people knew about raw diets and it was
a constant challenge to convert them. Now,
customers come in with some knowledge
and want to learn more. The store offers
classes on various natural health topics,
educating customers on natural alternatives
for pest prevention, worming and vaccines.
The expanded store will be a healing center for dogs and cats with a wider variety of
foods and supplements. It will have practitioners offices for animal chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, Reiki, Bowen therapy,
and an 1,100 sq. ft. training room for agility, play groups and obedience classes. Until
it opens in June, visit The Raw Connection
at 26549 Carmel Rancho Blvd., or online at

Owners Kurt Jensen and Ross McNabb have strong convictions regarding pet health and
nutrition, and their goal in opening a store six years ago was to offer pet owners a place to
shop with complete confidence in the quality of the products. Their philosophy is to offer
the best of the best and this extends to their high quality beds, collars and leads, toys and
accessories. They will never sell a product they wouldnt use for their own pets, and they
wont hesitate to drop a product immediately if they believe the manufacturer is putting
profit before principle.
Metro Pet Market is serious about education and it starts with their staff. All employees have ongoing reading and webinar assignments, and the store also participates in Dr
Meg Smarts curriculum at the University of Saskatchewan, providing students with a top
health food retailers perspective on pet nutrition. The store constantly strives to engage
customers and encourages them to do their own research. Their website contains a host of
information and they have a filing cabinet full of articles on nearly any subject, written by
veterinarians they respect; they eagerly distribute this information to customers seeking
information. The store also carries a wide selection of books and magazines. Theres been
a definite increase in customer awareness about pet nutrition, especially since the publicity about melamine in pet foods and the recent attention given to the dangers of Chinese
chicken jerky. Theyve noticed a lot more customers reading ingredient panels and asking a
lot of great questions and the store loves it! Despite the high budget and slick marketing
campaigns of multinational corporations suggesting the contrary, customers are thinking
outside the bag - searching for more natural, less processed diets for their pets. Customers
are much more open to variety, including fresh/frozen raw, raw freeze dried and dehydrated options.
Metro Pet Markets stores are deliberately kept small to assure they remain focused, and
also to keep the feel of an independent market. There are no marketing materials in the
store or on the windows, which allows a clean, uncluttered look. Products are displayed
in unique ways to avoid the typical just products on a shelf approach. The downtown
location has an upstairs gallery filled with stylish and unusual bowls, beds, cat trees and
artwork, showcased in a bright, modern space.
The store believes in giving back to the community and they are strong advocates for
responsible pet acquisition and ownership. They work closely with the Regina Humane
Society and other rescues and provide donations or sponsorships of more than $1,000 per
month to these causes.
Kurt and Ross have plans to expand their business, but are cautious about realizing this
vision. Theyve avoided the
pressure to franchise due
to the risk of compromising their standards. Their
primary goal is to remain
cutting edge, by continually
striving to provide the best
products and best information in the industry, and by
providing a unique shopping experience in their
clean and modern stores.

Feeding In Tune With The Seasons

By Leith Henry

s I take the long way home from a weekend spent hiking in

Lake Tahoe with my dogs, Kona and Hana Manu, Im reminded that a new season is just around the corner, ushering
in new energies and new beginnings. All at once, as if all of nature
got together and decided okay now, summer arrives.
Turnips and sweet potatoes will no longer be available at my
local farmers market, making way for summers highly sought
after cooling foods including cucumbers, melons and asparagus. As
I share a few fresh strawberries with the girls, my mind begins to

As a culture, weve lost touch with the deeper significance of
feeding ourselves and the animals we love a diet based on seasonal

availability. Long before the Industrial Age, globalization, and the

ever increasing tren d of environmental and lifestyle homogenization, both humans and animals respected and adhered to the laws
of nature by eating in accordance with the seasons. In doing so,
their wellbeing was aligned with that of nature and, as the diversity
of edibles ebbed and flowed with seasonal availability, it served to
optimize their bodies and particularly the immune system.
Modern day diseases such as Type II diabetes, metabolic syndrome and hypercholesterolemia used to be rare in humans and
unheard of in animals. In fact, before the emergence of the pet
food industry within the last six decades (and the resultant change
