Macroinvertebrate Biodiversity and Richness as Indicators to the Water Quality Status of
Mananga River, Cebu, Philippines
A. Research Question
What are the implications of the macroinvertebrate biodiversity and composition in relation
to the water quality of Mananga River?
B. Method
There will be two sample stations for this study. The first station will be on the midstream. It
is located at Camp IV, Jaclupan, Talisay City. The second station will be on the rivers
downstream which is located at Dumlog, Talisay City.
Using a D-frame net, macroinvertebrates will be collected from these stations. Stations are
noted to be ideal when these are on the productive spots where riffles and runs are present.
The nets opening should be facing the direction opposite to the water flow. The station should
have a dimension of 2 feet by 2 feet and depth of 8-9 inches. To agitate the macroinvertebrates
and dislodge them, a three-minute kick is to be done. All of these organisms will be carried into
the net. The net will be removed in forward scooping motion to prevent any collected organisms
to wash away from the net.
The contents will be poured on a white basin with water. The macroinvertebrates will be
collected by hand. From each station, all the samples will be combined and preserved in 70%
ethyl alcohol. In the laboratory, the macroinvertebrates will be separated and classified, only to
the extent of family level.
On the other hand, chemical oxygen demand, pH, and temperature will also be identified in
this study. We will comprehensively study the relations of the chemical water quality status of
the river to the biodiversity of macroinvertebrate diversity.
