Measurementanduseofelectronaffinity
Thispropertyismeasuredforatomsandmoleculesinthegaseousstateonly,sinceinasolidorliquidstates
theirenergylevelswouldbechangedbycontactwithotheratomsormolecules.Alistoftheelectronaffinities
wasusedbyRobertS.Mullikentodevelopanelectronegativityscaleforatoms,equaltotheaverageofthe
electronaffinityandionizationpotential.[2][3]Othertheoreticalconceptsthatuseelectronaffinityinclude
electronicchemicalpotentialandchemicalhardness.Anotherexample,amoleculeoratomthathasamore
positivevalueofelectronaffinitythananotherisoftencalledanelectronacceptorandthelesspositivean
electrondonor.Togethertheymayundergochargetransferreactions.
Signconvention
Touseelectronaffinitiesproperly,itisessentialtokeeptrackofsign.Foranyreactionthatreleasesenergy,the
changeEintotalenergyhasanegativevalueandthereactioniscalledanexothermicprocess.Electron
captureforalmostallnonnoblegasatomsinvolvesthereleaseofenergy[4]andthusareexothermic.The
positivevaluesthatarelistedintablesofEeaareamountsormagnitudes.Itistheword,releasedwithinthe
definitionenergyreleasedthatsuppliesthenegativesigntoE.ConfusionarisesinmistakingEeaforachange
inenergy,E,inwhichcasethepositivevalueslistedintableswouldbeforanendonotexothermicprocess.
TherelationbetweenthetwoisEea=E(attach).
However,ifthevalueassignedtoEeaisnegative,thenegativesignimpliesareversalofdirection,andenergyis
requiredtoattachanelectron.Inthiscase,theelectroncaptureisanendothermicprocessandtherelationship,
Eea=E(attach)isstillvalid.Negativevaluestypicallyariseforthecaptureofasecondelectron,butalsofor
thenitrogenatom.

emerge.Generally,nonmetalshavemorepositiveEeathanmetals.Atoms
whoseanionsaremorestablethanneutralatomshaveagreaterEea.
Chlorinemoststronglyattractsextraelectronsmercurymostweakly
attractsanextraelectron.Theelectronaffinitiesofthenoblegaseshavenot
beenconclusivelymeasured,sotheymayormaynothaveslightlynegative
values.
EAvsAtomicNumber
Eeagenerallyincreasesacrossaperiod(row)intheperiodictable.Thisiscausedbythefillingofthevalence
shelloftheatomaGroup17atomreleasesmoreenergythanaGroup1atomongaininganelectronbecauseit
obtainsafilledvalenceshellandthereforeismorestable.
AtrendofdecreasingEeagoingdownthegroupsintheperiodictablemightbeexpected.Theadditional
electronwillbeenteringanorbitalfartherawayfromthenucleus.Sincethiselectronisfartherfromthenucleus
itislessattractedtothenucleusandwouldreleaselessenergywhenadded.However,aclearcounterexampleto
thistrendcanbefoundinGroup2,andinspectingtheentireperiodictable,itturnsoutthattheproposedtrend
onlyappliestoGroup1atoms.
Thus,electronaffinityfollowstheleftrighttrendofelectronegativitybutnottheupdowntrend.
ThefollowingdataarequotedinkJ/mol.Elementsmarkedwithanasteriskareexpectedtohavenegativeor
nearzeroelectronaffinitiesonquantummechanicalgrounds.

pyrenearepositive.Insilicoexperimentsshowthattheelectronaffinityofhexacyanobenzenesurpassesthatof

"Electronaffinity"asdefinedinsolidstatephysics
Inthefieldofsolidstatephysics,theelectronaffinityisdefineddifferentlythaninchemistryandatomic
physics.Forasemiconductorvacuuminterface(thatis,thesurfaceofasemiconductor),electronaffinity,
typicallydenotedbyEEAor,isdefinedastheenergyobtainedbymovinganelectronfromthevacuumjust
outsidethesemiconductortothebottomoftheconductionbandjustinsidethesemiconductor:[6]
Inanintrinsicsemiconductoratabsolutezero,thisconceptisfunctionallyanalogoustothechemistrydefinition
ofelectronaffinity,sinceanaddedelectronwillspontaneouslygotothebottomoftheconductionband.At
nonzerotemperature,andforothermaterials(metals,semimetals,heavilydopedsemiconductors),theanalogy
doesnotholdsinceanaddedelectronwillinsteadgototheFermilevelonaverage.Inanycase,thevalueofthe
electronaffinityofasolidsubstanceisverydifferentfromthechemistryandatomicphysicselectronaffinity
valueforanatomofthesamesubstanceingasphase.Forexample,asiliconcrystalsurfacehaselectronaffinity
4.05eV,whereasanisolatedsiliconatomhaselectronaffinity1.39eV.
Theelectronaffinityofasurfaceiscloselyrelatedto,butdistinctfrom,itsworkfunction.Theworkfunctionis
thethermodynamicworkthatcanbeobtainedbyreversibly,isothermallymovinganelectronfromthevacuum
tothematerialthisthermodynamicelectrongoestotheFermilevelonaverage,nottheconductionbandedge:

dependonthesurfacetermination(crystalface,surfacechemistry,etc.)
andisstrictlyasurfaceproperty.
Insemiconductorphysics,theprimaryuseoftheelectronaffinityisnot
actuallyintheanalysisofsemiconductorvacuumsurfaces,butratherin
heuristicelectronaffinityrulesforestimatingthebandbendingthat
occursattheinterfaceoftwomaterials,inparticularmetal
semiconductorjunctionsandsemiconductorheterojunctions.
Incertaincircumstances,theelectronaffinitymaybecomenegative.[7]
Oftennegativeelectronaffinityisdesiredtoobtainefficientcathodes
thatcansupplyelectronstothevacuumwithlittleenergyloss.The
observedelectronyieldasafunctionofvariousparameterssuchasbias
voltageorilluminationconditionscanbeusedtodescribethese
structureswithbanddiagramsinwhichtheelectronaffinityisone
