Exercise 4 (a) Write a linear program for finding x1 and x2 satisfying:

and having |x1 2x2 | + | 3x1 x2 | as small as possible (with |.| denoting the
absolute value).
(b) Solve the resulting linear program.
Solution (a) Since x 0: | 3x1 x2 | = 3x1 + x2 . Let x1 2x2 = u v with
u 0 and v 0. Then |x1 2x2 | = |u v| |u| + | v| = u + v. Therefore we
investigate the LP problem:
min u + v + 3x1 + x2
subject to:
2x1 + x2 + x3
