CEP 416-Universal Design for Learning Template

For this assignment, you will focus on the technologies that you picked for last week's activity, and you will
make sure that they comply with UDL principles. Remember that simply using technology in the classroom is
not enough; we want to purposefully think about how technology enhances learning and how we can best plan
it into our activity to achieve intended learning goals.
YOUR NAME: Kiana Jordan
ACTIVITY GOAL(S): The activity will allow students to use technology as well as their classmates as resources to think
and show their knowledge by using online concept maps.

TECHNOLOGIES USED FOR ACTIVITY (please provide a URL link to it if applicable): ipads/laptops
(text2mindmap.com, conceptdraw.com)

UDL CHECKLIST
(adapted from CAST UDL curriculum self-check)
Flexible media and materials play an essential role in helping students achieve activity/lesson goals. The
principles below help you consider what could/could not work for all your students with the media and materials
included in your activity.

UDL principle

Example

Multiple and varied media are used

to present concepts and content

Text, images, graphics, audio,

video, and multimedia

Materials and media provide visual

equivalents for auditory information
and vice versa as needed

Captions for videos, text outlines

for lectures, text-to-speech or
digital voice tools for text

Options for diverse

linguistic/language abilities are
provided in materials and media

Hyperlinked multimedia glossary

definitions; foreign language
translations; language modality
translationsASL/speech

Explain how the technology you picked

for the activity provides that?
(add URL links, descriptions,
screenshots, etc if necessary)
Through the use of concept and thinking
maps online.
Students will be required to watch a video
tutorial on how to navigate and use
text2mindmap and concept draw before
actually beginning the activity. The tutorial
will be interactive and be followed by the
steps in text form.
Both websites have language options and
translations.

Visual organizers, rubrics, and

checklists are available to help
students to learn, plan, and complete
lessons

Using advanced organizers

Materials and media are designed to

help students monitor their own
progress and promote self-reflection

Comparing work over time

during the activity, picking their
best work, choosing new
personal goals

Materials and media provide

students with varied levels of
challenge and support to address
diverse abilities and challenges

More structured vs. open-ended

tasks in the activity, different
levels of difficulty

Students will be provided with a checklist of

what is required in each map as well as
questions to think about before moving on to
the next.
This activity helps students monitor their
own progress by having the complete 3
different maps. One with what they already
know, one with what they learned from their
classmates and one with what they still want
to learn.
The activity itself will be open ended
allowing the students to record what they
feel is important. The assessment after the
activity will be more structured consisting of
a true and false game where the students
split into two teams.

EVALUATION
Based on your responses, how would you modify your media and materials to address the diverse challenges,
talents, and preferences of your students? (answer one)

If your technology provides support for UDL principles (e.g., 4 out of 6 principles), what are other
student challenges or preferences that you could anticipate in this activity?
I can anticipate students maybe having challenges actually remembering the information they learned
in preparation for the true and false game and maybe becoming discouraged if they do not answer the
questions correctly.

If your technology does not provide support for UDL principles (e.g., less than 4 principles), how would
you modify your media and materials to address the diverse challenges, talents, and preferences of
your students?

REFLECTION
(participation points for this week).
Briefly describe your thoughts about the UDL-ization process:
1) How is UDL changing how you view technology for teaching and learning?
UDL helped me realize that everything may not work for every student so have to be willing to ensure
that the technology you use for teaching and learn can in some way accommodate the different
challenges of different students.
2) How will you implement UDL in your future classroom?

I will implement UDL in my future classroom by using the principles as guidelines to create different
activities and lessons for my students. I never want them to feel like they are not capable of succeeding
with the use of technology and I am sure that UDL will aide me in making sure of this/
