Therewillbeaoralclasspreassessmentbyaskingstudentswhattheyknowaboutparticularseasonsbeforethe
lesson.
Forassessment,studentswillbegivenanoversizedsheetofpaperalongwithcrayonsormarkers.Studentswillfold
theirpapersinto4sections.Ineachsection,thestudentwillwriteordrawhisorherselfineachseasonwithweather
propertiestosupporttheirlearnings.Studentswillbeexpectedtodistinguishthedifferencesineachseason.Students
willbeencouragedtodrawasmanypropertiesastheycantoshowtheirknowledge.Onthebackoftheirpaper,
studentswillwritetheirBirthdatesandunderstandwhatseasontheirbirthdayfallsunder.Examples:
Drawingthesun,aswimmingpool,andhimorherselfwithaswimsuitandsunglassesonwouldbearepresentationof
summer.
Thiswouldprovetheyunderstoodthatduringthesummer,temperaturesrisecausingustodressinlessclothing.
Drawingawhiteground,clouds,asnowman,andhimorherselfbundledupinclothingwithaChristmastreewouldbea
goodrepresentationofwinter.
Thiswouldshowthattheyunderstandthatduringthewinter,differenttypesofprecipitationfallandwhenitscold,we
shouldbundleuptosurviveandstaywarm.

IMPLEMENTATION
IntroductiontoLesson

Studentswillbeseatedintheclassroom.Theteacherwillbringupaquestionforthestudentsthatwillstriketheir
interestintoday'ssubject.Suchas"Wasitsnowingoutsidetodayclass?"(consideringthisisnotduringwinter)andthe
studentswillreply"No."nowlaughingandnowintreged.Theteacherwillask"whyisn'titsnowingtoday?"andthe
studentsshouldgivetheteacherananswerthatstatessomethinglike"Becauseitsfall."or"becauseitsspring."or
"becauseitsnotwinter."thentheteachercandiveintothepreassessmentandtellherstudentstoproveit.Shecan
askthemwhatkindofweathershouldshebeexpectingthatdaythen?Asaclass,theybeginthelearningprocessby
learningfromeachotherandgettingtheirmindsusetothedayssubject.

TeacherInput

Atthispoint,theteacherwillbringupherclassroomcomputerwhichisrunningWindows10.Theteacherbringsupa
previouslysavedSmartNotebookfileonweatherandtheseasonsontheirSmartBoard.
Oneachnotebookslide,theirarepicturesofdressupdollchildren.
Eachslideisthesameexcepteachoneislabeledforeachseason(winter,spring,summer,andfall)withlabeledrelated
picturesunderit.
Therelatedpicturesaremeanttomakethedolldressedandmaketheappropriateseasonaroundthedoll.Therelated
pictureswillnotbeallstraightforward.Forexample,onthesummerslide,theteachermayhaveasun,flipflops,
sunscreen,apumpkin,andapairofsnowglovesastherelatedpictures.Alloftherelatedpicturesfitwiththesummer
slideexceptforthepumpkinandglovesandismeanttohelpstudentsdifferentiate.Thenumberofrelatedpictures
shouldvaryfrom1015relatedpicturestogivestudentsavariety.
Also,theteachermayhavepropstoencouragethechildren.Forexample,theteachermayhaveascarf,gloves,
sunglasses,leaves,andotherelementsthatheorshecanmodelwithinordertokeepstudentsattentionandgive
studentssomethingtangabletolookat.Also,fortheEClearners,itcouldbeusedasahelpfulhintfromtheteacher
whenitistheirturntocometotheboard.
Makingsuretheirareenoughturnsforeverystudent,theteacherwillleteachstudentvolunteerorbecalledontocome
upandplacearelatedpictureonoraroundthedolltocompletethepictureforthatseason.
Inordertocompletetheseasonpictures,thelabelswillnotmovealongwiththerelatedpictures.Instead,afterthe
relatedpictureismovedonoraroundtothedoll,anotherlabelwillbevisiblebyhoveringthemouseoverthatparticular
relatedimage.Thisistoavoidclutteronthefinalpicture.
EachSmartNotebookslidewillbecompletedandreviewedwiththestudents.
Afterthestudentshavedonehandsonlearningwiththeincorporatedsmartboardactivity,theteacherwillbringupa
previouslysavedpowerpointabouttheseasons.
Eachslidewillhaveafunandrelatableexplanationofthatseason.Theexplanationwillbestudentsappropriateandwill
includesomeofthepreviouslyseenpicturesfromthepowerpoint,afewkeywords,andfriendlycolorsthatrelateto
thatseason.Theteacherwilladdmorepicturesthathelpstudentsunderstandthestandardandhowhumansadaptto
theweatherconditions.Thepowerpointwillincludepicturesofcertainclothesandcertainfoodsthatwerenotpreviously
showninthesmartboardactivitytobroadenthestudentsknowledge.AllpicturesandslideswillbelabeledforELL
learners.
Thelastslideofthepowerpointwillhaveinstructionsonthenextindependentpractice.Theteacherwillorallyreadthe
instructionsfortheactivity.Whilethestudentsarepreparingforthenextactivitybygatheringsuppliesorbrain
storming,theteacherwilltakeapictureofeachofthepreviouslycreatedseasonpictureswiththeSnipittoolonthe
computerandpastethemtogetherinanemptyslideforthestudentstolookat.Thisissothestudentscanusethe
classcreatedpicturesasexamples.

GuidedPractice

Afterthelesson,studentswillbegivenaoversizedpieceofpaperandcoloredmarkersorcrayons.
Theteacherwillpassoutallneededmaterialsforthestudents.
Studentswillfoldthepaperintofoursections
eachsectionisforeachseason.
Studentswillthendrawthemselvesineachseasonandaddelementssuchassnow,thesun,rain,flowers,oranyother
seasonalelementstoeachsection.
Studentswillbeencouragedtodrawasmanyseasonalelementsaspossibleincludingappropriateseasonalclothing,
appropriateseasonalweather,andanyotherappropriateelementsthatcanberelatedbacktothattypeofseason.

Afterthestudentshavecompletedtheirfourseasonaldrawings,theywillbeinstructedtoturntheirpapersovertothe
backsidethatisblank.
Atthispoint,studentswillbeinstructedtowritetheirbirthdaysandnameswithanyneededspellinghelpfromthe
teacher.
Afterwritingtheirbirthdaysandnames,thestudentswillbeinstructedtothinkaboutwhatseasontheirbirthdayfalls
under.
Afterfiguringoutwhatseasontheirbirthdayfallsin,thestudentswillbeencouragedtodecoratethebackoftheirpaper
withappropriateseasonalpicturesorwords.
Forexample,iftheirbirthdayfallsonDecember29th,theywouldbeencouragedtodrawsnowflakes,snowmen,maybe
evensomeChristmasicons.
Ifstudentsfinishtheiractivitiesearly,theywillbeencouragedtoparticipateinamatchingworksheetaboutelements
(food,clothing,weather)intheseasons
IndependentPractice

Studentswillcompletetheirseasonalartworkontheirownwithoutassistancefromtheteacherunlessitisneeded.If
theyfinishearly,studentscanparticipateinamatchingworksheetthatallowsthemtomatchdifferentseaonalelements
toeachseason.

DifferentiatedInstruction

ForELLLearners,allrelatedpicturesandslideswillbelabeledinastudentfriendly,easytoreadfont.
Forthefastfinishers,theteacherwillprovideamatchingworksheetthatstudentswillbeabletouse.Theworksheetwill
includeelementsofeachseasonandthestudentcantryandmatchthemwitheachseason.
ForEClearners,theywillbeabletoworkattheirownpaceontheirdrawingactivity.Theirwillbenopressuretofinishat
acertaintimeandcreativitywillbeencouraged.Also,duringtheactivity,studentswillhavehelpfulhintsfromtheteacher
ifneededandhaveanotherformoftherelatedpicturestolookat.Thesetoolswillbeusedthroughtheteacherusing
props.

Closure

Afterallthekidsaredonewiththeirdrawings,theteacherwillcollectthepapersandplacethemonapreviouslymade
largeclassroomboard.Theboardhasfoursectionsforeachseason,theteacherexplainsthatwithinthenextfewclass
periodsthateachstudentspaperwillbelaminated.Astheendresult,eachstudentsindividualpaperwillbelaminated
andplacedunderthecorrectsectionoftheboardwiththeirbirthdaysideshowing.
thisismeanttohelpstudentsreferbacktotheseasonsthroughouttheentireyear,realizewhentheirfellowpeers
havebirthdays,andcanbeausefultoolfortheteachertoreferbackto.
Theteachercanfinishupthelessonordoaquickreviewofthelessonbyreferringbacktothechildren'sworkand
comparingthemandtakingelementsawayfromthemtosharewiththeclass.
Also,thepaperswillalwaysbetheresostudentscangoseewhentheirpeersbirthdaysfall,orgetnewfoundideas
aboutotherseasonsandwhatothermonthsfallduringwhatseason.
