ANALYSIS OF SPILLWAY CHANNEL AT DOWNSTREAM SECTION

Fig. 1 Dimensions of the Spillway channel at downstream

The finite element analysis of the spillway channel is performed using line elements in SAP 2000.
The line diagram of the channel section is shown below:-

7m
25m

0.75m

The base slab is supported by springs. Stiffness of the foundation springs is calculated using the
modulus of sub grade reaction Ks which is approximated as

K s 40 x3 xq a

For q a 210 KPa , K s 25200

(J.E Bowles, 1996)

KN / m 2
m

Joint spring values for 0.75m spacing of springs = 0.75 x 1.0 x 25200
The line element SAP model with foundation springs is shown below:-

= 18,900 KN/m

Load Cases :D = Dead load of structure

F = Weight and Pressure of water
Maximum water pressure acting on wall (at EL 24m) = 10 x 7 = 70 KN/m 2
Water pressure distribution on the side wall and base slab is shown below:-

where, Environmental durability factor, S = 1.3

Maximum bending moment in wall

= 1263 KN-m/m
For specified cylinder strength of concrete fc = 27 MPa and fy = 414MPa
Steel ratio required,
= 0.0016
Area of steel required, As
= 2390 mm2/m
Minimum steel according to (ACI 350R 7.12.2.1)
As,min = 0.004 x 1000 x 1500/2
= 3000 mm2/m
Maximum bending moment in base slab
= 683 KN-m/m
For specified cylinder strength of concrete fc = 27 MPa and fy = 414MPa
Steel ratio required,
= 0.0006
Area of steel required, As
= 853 mm2/m
Minimum steel according to (ACI 350R 7.12.2.1)
As,min = 0.005 x 1000 x 1500/2
= 3750 mm2/m
