My notes, commentary
We contend that innovations should aim
toward a vision of authentic student
achievement, and we are examining the
extent to which instruction in restructured
schools is directed toward authentic forms
of student achievement. We use the word
authentic to distinguish between
achievement that is significant and
meaningful and that which is trivial and
useless.

The goal isnt for student to just pass the tests

and have success in school. The goal is to have
a student that can take the information given
and see its significance not just recite it.

To guard against oversimplification, we

formulated several standards, rather than
only one or two, and we conceptualized
each standard as a continuous construct
from less to more of a quality, rather
than as a categorical (yes or no) variable.

This continues with the new wave of deeper

learning, yes or no doesnt need deep thought,
more or less forces you to elaborate and build
on thought.

Manipulating information and ideas through

these processes allows students to solve
problems and discover new (for them)
meanings and understandings. When
students engage in HOT, an element of

The more a student manipulates a thought

they begin to break down the information then
build it back up getting more out of it.

uncertainty is introduced, and instructional

outcomes are not always predictable.
For students, knowledge is deep when they
make clear distinctions, develop
arguments, solve problems, construct
explanations, and otherwise work with
relatively complex understandings.
A lesson gains in authenticity the more
there is a connection to the larger social
context within which students live.

When students have the ability to go deeper

than just memorization and can elaborate on a
topic by making distinctions, or complex
arguments and explanations that is deep
knowledge

The point of social studies is to create educated

citizens and is pointless if all they can do is
recite it, to make an educated citizen they have
to connect the topic to the world they live in
today otherwise there is no need for social
studies.
Connections: I like that the reading breaks down the 5 standards, it makes it easy to know what your EQ
and lesson plan should address. The reading follows suit of much of the earlier blog posts on deeper
thinking and go further than just teaching and reciting. This helps when making your EQ previously talked
about in the last blog post by giving you standards your EQ and lesson should fit in.
