A Message from Sandra

When I was a child, the world was a painful place
for me. The lights were too bright, the hot was too hot
and the cold was too cold. The most gentle breeze was
wind that stole my breath. The clock on the school room
wall didnt tick or tock. Instead, it went off like a gong in
my brain, pounding second after second after second.
Riding in the back seat of a car on a bumpy gravel road
rearranged the thoughts in my head.
I was sensitive. I was sensitive to all of the above
but more, I was sensitive to the voices around me that
no one else seemed to hear. I became friends with the
sweet beings around me that everyone else clearly
could not see. My favorite of them was Lizzie. They
justified her as my imaginary friend. There was nothing
imaginary about her. I was just happy that they didnt
send her away.
I often found other kids, and even my parents,
way too childish. Foolish, really. I could never
understand why they didnt get what I knew to be true
about life.

-6-

Children of the Cosmos

In order to adjust, I spent a lot of time in another

placea place throughout this book I will refer to as
across the bridge. On the other side of that bridge, I was
able to find peace. I wasnt sure back then how I got
there on that bridge. But it was there that I created my
own little world. All the noise and pain transmuted into
warmth and soft comfort.
My regular mental absence did not go unnoticed
by the adults in my life. For years, I made my way back
and forth between tantrums in protest to the earthly
experience and back over the bridge. And lets be clear.
The bridge is a very real place. As time went on, it
became clear to me I needed to adjust somehow. So I
did. I became, in part, someone I was not. I forgot what
was real. I began to comply. I learned to fit in.
Now, as a highly functioning adult, my
hypersensitivity still remains. I have learned to make
conscious choices about when to ground myself and be
fully present here in the earth experience, and when to
travel across the bridge to seek shelter, solace, and to
communicate with ethereal beings. It is through this
ability to travel back and forth between the two places
that brought me to such a deep understanding of autism
and our Children of the Cosmos.
The first time I came face-to-face, heart-to-heart,
soul-to-soul with a child living on the autism spectrum, I
felt that I had come face-to-face with myself. No, I have
-7-

Sandra Alexander

never been diagnosed with autism. I do not claim a fully

parallel experience by any stretch. But as I see it, I have
been given a deep emotional, spiritual and physical
connection to a real place we have come to call the
autism spectrum and with the children living there. The
spectrum is that bridge I have known so well all my life.
Exactly where and how far out on the bridge an
autistic child hangs out, is an accurate indicator of
where he falls on what we currently call the autism
spectrum.
I have the coordinates, right here in my pocket.
Ive been there. I know how to find these kids. I know
first-hand how painful being earthbound is for them.
I intentionally gathered years of experience and
a formal education in the area of Early Childhood
Education and in working with kids on the spectrum,
their parents and their educators. It is by synthesizing
these practical skills, and my childhood gift of knowing
and traveling over the bridge, that Autism: The Spiritual
Approach to Intervention came to fruition.
For all of you who are applying mind/body
interventions for our kids on the spectrum, Autism: SAI
is your GPS to finding your childs location. SAI provides
both the coordinates and the tools to gently encourage a
child to reconnect with us and this earthly life. Through
SAI, we do this by gradually desensitizing a child with

-8-

Children of the Cosmos

autism to the earths atmosphere. This is what the

Spiritual Approach to Intervention is all aboutits
about caringabout nurturingabout sensitivity,
empathy and mostly, Autism: The Spiritual Approach is
about love.

Why Did I Write the

Revised/Expanded Edition of
Children of the Cosmos?
When I released the first edition of Children of
the Cosmos, my focus was on awareness. I spent a
significant portion of the book encouraging a more
open-minded perspective on the children living on the
autism spectrum. I emphasized the intuitive nature of
these children and pointed out how much we can learn
from them. I pointed out their inherent ability and deep
need to travel beyond the earthly experience.
Three years have passed since the initial version
of Children of the Cosmos was published. While there is
still much work to be done in the area of autism
awareness, movements in that direction are making
great progress. Consequently, in this revised/expanded
version of the book, I have chosen to shift my
attentionand yours.
The first edition of the book briefly outlined the
4-step process (SAI) proposed as a way to connect to
the children on the autism spectrum in a whole new
wayand a way to connect to each child and his real
and unique purpose. I shared the basics of SAI, which
- 10 -

Children of the Cosmos

provides a toolbox to help us integrate spirit into

mainstream mind/body interventions, achieving a
holistic result. Since 2013, in partnership with parents
and certified SAI providers worldwide, SAI became
more universally applied in the home, in classrooms
and in the therapeutic setting.
Over this three-year period, we have gathered
outcomes and insights on how to use the SAI tools to the
highest and best good. We are making life easier and
interventions more meaningful for parents, educators
and providers using SAI as a complement to the current
best practices they have in place. In this revised edition
of Children of the Cosmos, I will walk you, the reader,
through the 4-step SAI process in expanded detail.
I will share an entire set of newly-developed,
highly-effective spiritual tools, that when applied, are
proven to transform borderline outcomes into
miraculous results in our work with children on the
autism spectrum. I will also share provider testimonials
to help you feel inspired, encouraged, energized and
uplifted. My goal is that you will move forward in your
sacred assignment as a parent or provider with
renewed excitement and hope.
I am honored to be the messenger of this
information. I credit the wisdom behind this process to
the children, my best and most perfect teachers, and to
the divine force that has held me close and safe during
- 11 -

the course of my journey from childhood to where I am

todaydeeply grateful, still learning, and still
travelingto and from my place on the bridge.

Children of the Cosmos

Introduction
Just Beyond Our Grasp
As the adult guides of children on the autism
spectrum, we have a responsibility to help these deeplyspirited children utilize their intuitive gifts within a
controlled framework.
In Children of the Cosmos, you will be guided
through a step-by-step process on how to reach
children presenting with the signs and symptoms of
autism in a whole new way. You will gather tools to
distinguish behaviors associated with the autism
spectrum from those being created from the childs
immediate environment. This process allows us to have
a much clearer picture on how to approach
intervention.
You will learn, through simple visualization
techniques, to reach your child in his world, where he
hangs out a good percentage of the time. Your
newfound tools will facilitate your ability to help him
and connect to him in the place where he is most
comfortable, while at the same time honoring and
supporting his divine purpose.

Autism: The Spiritual Approach to Intervention

(SAI) was designed to be used in conjunction with
traditional mind/body therapies and interventions. This
method allows us to inject the spirit piece into
mind/body interventions. What results is a whole-istic
result rather than a partial-istic one.
We are finally achieving the outcomes for our
children on the spectrum that we have been seeking for
decades by adding this missing piecespirit. Holistic
interventions have been accepted for a very long time
now in all areas of health interventions. Yet when we
consider injecting spirit into any process, the prevailing
question is,
But how?
Autism: The Spiritual Approach is a 4-step
process that answers the how question, providing
simple-to-use, concrete tools that are transforming
borderline outcomes into miraculous results in our
work with children living on the autism spectrum.
It is time to transform our unpredictable,
temporary results in our work with children on the
spectrum. Autism: The Spiritual Approach to
Intervention is an effective catalyst for that
transformation process.

- 14 -

Children of the Cosmos

What parents and providers like the most about

the process is that integrating SAI into existing
therapies and interventions requires little additional
time commitment. SAI isnt just one more thing to add to
an already overloaded plate. Instead, SAI allows us to do
what we are already doing, only in a very different way.
Consistently, the children we are working with
sense from the very beginning that we have made a shift
in our approach and become more open to our support
and interventions. Parents and practitioners find that, in
using SAI, they are showing up in a new, more spiritbased way in all aspects of life.
I am frequently asked why I believe the instance
of autism is increasing at such an unimaginable rate.
While I do not discount theories that relate to diet,
immunizations and all the rest, I answer in the form of a
what if.
What if, as we each elevate ourselves in order to
reach the children we love who live on the spectrum, we
become more elevated and spiritual individuals.
What if, then, this elevated state spreads
throughout the human race as a species. As the numbers
of children on the spectrum increase, so do the numbers
of adults who care for them and those who seek ways to
connect to them more fully.

- 15 -

Sandra Alexander

So what if each and every one of us who loves

someone living on the spectrum were to embrace The
Spiritual Approach, elevating in the process. What if
that higher level of consciousness spread to the masses?
We can theorize all we want, but ultimately we
are only making our best guess about the reasons for
the increase in the instances of autism over the past few
years. So lets get out of the what ifs now and talk about
what we do know:
Autism: The Spiritual Approach to Intervention
works. When we integrate this process into our work
with our children in the spectrum, we bring peace into
chaos. We bring connection into disconnection. We
bring boundless love into the equation.
Allow your intuition to guide you on how best to
use the 4 steps of the SAI process. It is a good idea to
begin by reading through all 4 steps thoroughly. Then,
you will have a better sense of where in the process to
start. Many parents and providers begin with Step 1 and
move in a linear way through to Step 4. Others begin
with the more metaphysical tools outlined in Step 4 and
use steps 1-3 to shore up the results with increased
energy, environmental adjustment and by calming
behaviors.
Or just open the book and allow spirit to choose
the best place to start. Trust yourself. That is the crux of

- 16 -

Children of the Cosmos

the SAI process. Believe in yourself. Believe in your

child.
This journey, as with all journeys, begins with
the first step. Youll love how it feels. Youll love how it
works even more. Try it. Expect miracles.

A Sample:
Two Step Four Spiritual Tools
You Can Use Starting NOW!

Bridging the Distance

The first three steps in Autism: The Spiritual
Approach to Intervention provide the foundation for
Step 4 of the process. Step 4 is where we bring in
therapeutic visualization and meditative tools and build
the intuitive bridges required to reach a child on the
spectrum, understanding him differently than we ever
have before.
We all have intuition. We all communicate
energetically. For instance, we think of a friend and she
calls us at that very moment. Here in Step 4, we will
work with our individual intuitive gifts, in whatever

- 18 -

Children of the Cosmos

way that is comfortable for us. We will shore up our

own ability to inject spirit into mind/body.
Have you ever been driving along in what you
might call another world? You arrive at your destination
and wonder how on earth you got there? We all
experience this type of distraction. During this time, we
were functioning in a trance-like state. Where are we
when we arent here? How do we get to that other place
and how do we return? And what is so intriguing about
the other place that we are willing to let fate take the
wheel while we lift off and spend time there?
The truth is, we are located wherever our
consciousness is located. When talking to a friend, if we
are thinking about what we need at the grocery store,
we literally transport to the grocery store. Thats where
we are. We are not with our friend. Amidst what we call
our daydream, we startle, come back, and realize that
we have no idea what our friend has been talking about
for the past few minutes.
In all of the following Step 4 tools, we use this
consciousness geography to inject spirit into our
mind/body work with children on the spectrum. Used
alone or in combination, each Step 4 tool will help us
bridge the distance between us and a child on the
spectrum. Expect miracles.

Stop, Drop and Roll

Whenever we are faced with a life challenge,
large or small, we tend to fall into action. We get busy
trying to figure it all out. We need to formulate a
solution. Especially when it applies to helping a child in
distress, we want the suffering to stop and we want it to
stop now. But we need to understand that digging in
right away is a reactive response, rather than a
proactive one. We tend to know this in the moment, and
yet our tendency to get right in there and fix everything
can be such a strong force, that most of the time, we just
cant help ourselves. Thats where stop, drop and roll
comes in.
You are probably familiar with the stop, drop
and roll expression as it relates to fire. Should your hair
or clothing catch fire, the instruction is to stop, drop and
roll. I use this commonly-understood expression to
describe this valuable Step 4 tool.
When a challenge presents, whether with a
childs behavior, a conflict with a friend or colleague, or
any issue that just pushes our buttons, unless there is
some immediate danger, the stop, drop and roll is an
effective way to inject spirit into the process.
Heres how it works:
First, just stop. Stop doing and stop trying to
formulate an immediate solution or intervention. Then,
- 20 -

Children of the Cosmos

drop the need to be right or to do anything at all.

Finally, roll all of your energy instead into what is the
most difficult thing to do. Wait. Waiting is the only way
to allow our highest inner or outer intelligence to come
in and support us. Most of the time, our human nature
gets us busy taking it all on. We can forget that both
divine guidance and inner wisdom are available to us.
But that supreme guidance can only come when we
invite it. The stop, drop and roll is a practical way to
allow the required time and space for divine messages
to arrive. Even when the situation is emergent and calls
for an immediate intervention, once we get the
emergency under control, we start the waiting process.
I am often asked,
So what do I do while I am waiting?
We are doers, after all. Thats human nature, too.
Waiting forces us to go beyond our nature. When we do
nothing, we can feel as though we are dropping the ball.
In truth, when we wait, we are handing the ball over to
a higher power and influence.
What happens during the waiting is the miracle.
Divine help moves into the space that waiting has
created. The problem will either resolve all on its own
or we will receive divine instructions through our
intuition on exactly what we need to do in the physical
to solve the problem. We will gain a deeper level of
- 21 -

Sandra Alexander

certainty that we are on the right track because we have

allowed a spiritual solution to surface naturally.
We can make the waiting easier, too. While we
wait, we can roll all of our energy into using another
Step 4 spiritual tool. So even though we are preventing
ourselves from doing something in the physical in an
attempt to solve the problem, doing something spiritual
can ease the waiting and help facilitate the spiritual
solution.
My favorite tool to use while waiting, is the
metaphysical conversation as described below. Lets
talk about that.
The Marquee Visualization
You know those neon signs, often called a
marquee, that are used for advertising, words in bright
lights that can be seen from great distances, running
over and over again? Imagine then, that there is always
a thought marquee running on our forehead, or at the
third eye chakra. This means, that in spite of the fact
that we project positive body language, or that we keep
our words positive, the truth behind our thoughts can
run just like that marquee. And if our thoughts are
negative, even our subconscious thoughts, they are
displayed on our marquee for all to see.

- 22 -

Children of the Cosmos

True. Not everyone can see our marquee. But

children and adults on the spectrum, in particular, have
a heightened awareness. The bottom line is that we
need to be conscious of what we are projecting on our
marquee. The more intuitive the people around us are,
the more clearly they can perceive the marquee running
across our forehead.
For example, when a child typically tantrums at a
certain time of day, we can begin anticipating the
tantrum. These expectations run a negative marquee.
The child reads the marquee that says,
Tantrum. Tantrum. Here comes the tantrum.
The results? You guessed it. The child will
tantrum.
We run the marquee. The other person then
reads our expectations and is more than happy to meet
those expectations.
We have been directly told by children on the
spectrum as young as 5 years old that they know what a
certain adult is thinking about them. The idea then, is to
become aware that we are always running a marquee,
since we are always thinking. As long as we are
advertising our thoughts anyway, why not sweeten the
advertisement? When we consciously run a marquee
that reflects our most positive expectations of the child,
- 23 -

Sandra Alexander

or anyone in our space, child or adult, spectrum or not,

others will begin to meet our most positive expectations
instead of negative ones.
The use of the positive marquee when working
with children on the autism spectrum is bringing us
immediate, miraculous results. The impact is
predictable and long lasting. Using this tool, the children
and adults around us immediately sense that we see the
best in them. They want to do their best to live up to our
faith in them. And what could be better than that?
We are projecting acceptance. We are projecting
encouragement. We are projecting love.
Can you imagine the impact if each and every
one of us made this one tiny shift? What would the
world as a whole look and feel like if we all ran a
positive, accepting marquee every day, with everyone
we meet. Try it. Expect miracles.
_______________________________________________
When we apply the meditative tools in Step 4, we
typically see immediate and miraculous results. If we
meet obstacles in our desired results, we revert to steps
1-3 and ask the following questions:
Does this child and his supporting adult have
enough energy to do the work?

- 24 -

Children of the Cosmos

Is there something in the childs Spirit

Temperament that remains unattended and

might be throwing him off?
Is there a challenging behavior that is blocking
our attempts to intervention that we must tend
to first?
The reason that the 4-step spiritual approach is
so effective, is because all aspects of the childs world
are addressed within the 4-step process. SAI provides
us with a selection of spiritual power tools, when up to
now, comparatively, we have been trying to build a
house of capacity and connection with just a hammer
and nail. Our own intuition and close observation of the
child in our care will drive your tool choices and what
steps to focus on. Embrace your own inner knowing and
trust your gut. In this way, create just the right formula.
Integration of SAI into day-to-day life is an
ongoing process. The speed with which SAI will bring
results will depend upon your commitment to the
practice, the frequency with which you apply it and how
far out on the spectrum the child resides when you
begin.
We find that using SAI is not particularly time
consuming. Through SAI, instead of adding more
intervention, we are simply changing the way we
approach our being with a child.

Look What Happens Next

Not Beyond Our Reach
For an autistic child, body consciousness is not
home. Being engaged with us is not a comfortable place
to be for him. Yet most popular mind/body
interventions designed for children on the spectrum
attempt to engage him without fully understanding or
honoring his discomfort level or his process. Many
autistic children present as non-verbal.
But in relation to his clinical non-verbal status,
we often miss the truth of the matterhe is
communicating, non-verbally, and often telepathically.
We can use body/mind outcome-based methods, and
integrate SAI in order to transform our results,
honoring the childs sensitivities and unique needs. In
other words, we can apply our interventions with love.
The Spiritual Approach to Intervention
provides us with a way to meet a child half-way, so to

- 26 -

Children of the Cosmos

speak. Instead of dragging him into our world, we learn

to enter his, offering a gentle invitation. When we view a
child on the spectrum from this perspective, it becomes
clear that he is never beyond our reach. We simply need
to accept responsibility to move closer to him by
stretching our capacity to intuitively enter his world.
The following commentary from parents and
providers who are integrating SAI into their practice
and parenting is inspiring and encouraging. The longer
we have worked to connect with a child or adult on the
spectrum, the more skeptical we can become about
considering one more process or intervention. We can
feel that we are drowning in conflicting advice and
information.
Caroline Coleman is the mother of an adult non-verbal
son on the autism spectrum. Caroline and Kyle facilitate a
program called Connections through Music together
and reside in Cornwall, England. A message from
Caroline:
The SAI approach is rooted in intuition and
complements my own work. Revisiting my own practice
through the SAI approach has enabled me to revise and
further develop my own techniques. And as a parent of
an autistic son, the SAI approach has revealed insights
in my parental relationship with him. Through SAI, I
have discovered how we can change unwanted
outcomes before they happen by aligning with
- 27 -

metaphysical fields of awareness. For anyone who

intends to take their practice or parenting to the next
level, SAI is a must.
Carrie Skluzak is a Brain Integration Technique
practitioner with BrainAbility in Lakewood, Colorado. As
a mother, Carrie has raised a child with ADHD and has
been helping people with learning and emotional
challenges since 2009. A message from Carrie:
The SAI methodology went deeper than initial
appearances. These are effective and powerful tools and
need to be spread as far and wide as possible. I now use
these tools almost daily to help me understand and
reach my clientswell, everyone, really. What a
positive direction! SAI tools allow me to serve my
clients at a much higher level with more dramatic
results. I am now getting wow comments from happy
customers. These tools work, and they work
immediately.
Holly Wu is a co-founder and director at Chinook Spirit
Childrens Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico
educator, mom and published author. She holds a Master
of Arts in Elementary Education and is a National Board
Certified Teacher. Holly has chosen her work with SAI as
the subject of her New Mexico teaching re-certification
thesis. A message from Holly:

- 28 -

Children of the Cosmos

Applying the 4-steps of SAI in the elementary school

classroom has guided us to create daily miracles in a
mindful manner. One student, who wouldnt make eye
contact or even converse, began making eye contact,
talking with us and showing extreme compassion for
others in a very short period of time. Everything really
can be different. Believe it!
Valerie Sahyoun is a co-founder and classroom teacher
at Chinook Spirit Childrens Academy in Albuquerque,
New Mexico. She is a mother and has gained 17 years of
experience as an educator. A message from Val:
I would recommend SAI and not just for children on
the spectrum. SAI continued to help students face
challenges. One of my students has been physically and
verbally aggressive with other students. With this
process, he has had no outbursts in months. I was also
able to involve his mother in the process. I use
metaphysical conversations now, as a regular part of my
teaching practice and in my personal life, too.
Dr. Carmen Diaz has earned her PhD and is a
prescribing psychotherapist in private practice in Las
Cruces, New Mexico. A message from Dr. Diaz:
I now use SAI as the basis for everything I do in my
practice. I have seen my patients immediately become
more engaged.

advanced training in several therapeutic approaches,
including Neurodevelopmental Treatment Technique,
Sensory Integration and Craniosacral Therapy. She
specializes in working with persons who have unique
challenges relating to Autism, ADD and ADHD. A message
from Kim:
Applying SAI, I have more ease during my therapy
sessions by focusing on the true nature of the child. I
have found greater quality of connection with the
children I work with. They share more thoughts with
me, and seem to trust me more. This is a delightfully
surprising process that has enhanced results in my
work and in my life.

These talented parents and providers, and others
across the globe using SAI have found a unique,
individualized way to integrate the SAI tools into their
work, some with children and adults on the spectrum
and other clients presenting with significant life
challenges. Each provider was intuitively drawn to
different spiritual approach tools within the SAI process
and has formulated a personalized combination of these
tools in response to the needs of his or her child/client.
You will do the same as you begin to apply the process.
There is no right or wrong way to apply SAI. SAI is a do

no harm approach. You will be able to pick and choose

the tool combination that you feel comfortable using
and that brings the miraculous results you seek.

Conclusion
A Gentle Invitation
Autism: The Spiritual Approach to Intervention
was designed to offer us a gentle invitation for a child
on the spectrum to join us in a way that feels safe and
comfortable for him. In order to accomplish this, we use
the 4 steps to meet him in his world first. This approach
honors the childs own strength of spirit and in the
process, elevates our own consciousness and builds our
strength of spirit.
To be successful with SAI, we have to use it.
Dont feel overwhelmed. The number of tools offered in
this book is extensive. But what we find, as we are
- 31 -

Sandra Alexander

actually out there using SAI, is that it takes just one baby
step and the application of just one spiritual tool for us
to see a remarkable change. Start slowly in reasonable
increments. With each small step and each tool you try,
your child will sense your effort and open up to feeling
closer to you.
As a parent, educator or provider, with each
small miracle, you will feel energized, inspired and
hopeful. Applying the SAI tools will become a way of
being for you and you will show up in every area of your
life in a more spirit minded, spirit hearted way.
Autism: The Spiritual Approach to Intervention
Youll love how it feels. Youll love how it works even
more. Find peace. Find hope. Find the child you so
deeply love. Try it. Expect miracles.
