Developmental Impact of Maltreatment and

Implications for Effective Interventions
A childs brain development is profoundly influenced by his or her
experience. Adverse experiences such as abuse, neglect or exposure to
violence can shape the organization of the brain which, in turn, influences
the capacity of the brain to help a child think, feel and behave. The
impact of any event is likely to be most profound on the systems in the
brain which are most rapidly developing. Therefore, depending upon
the specific time in development that the maltreatment took place, as
well as the specific nature of adverse experience, a range of problems can
arise, from delayed development to impulsivity to severe emotional problems. When the exposure
to violence is compounded by the loss and protection of the childs primary caregivers brain
development becomes particularly vulnerable and the spectrum of symptoms exhibited expand.
Understanding the origins of these problems and to develop effective interventions is one of the
major challenges for professionals working with traumatized children.
Dr. Jerry Yager is a Clinical Psychologist, currently in private practice, with more than 35 years of
experience in the assessment and treatment of traumatized children and adolescents. He specializes
in working with adolescents who exhibit self-destructive behavior and have severe mental illness
such as clinical depression, bipolar mood disorder, post-traumatic distress disorder and psychosis.
Dr. Jerry trains professionals locally, nationally and internationally on the developmental impact of
trauma. Before moving to private practice, Dr. Jerry served as Director of Training at Community
Education at Denver Childrens Advocacy Center, and was the Executive Director of the Denver
Childrens Home, which shares a mission with Denver Childrens Advocacy Center to provide
high quality mental health care for low-income children whose problems would otherwise go
undiagnosed and untreated. Dr.Yager received his Doctorate in Psychology from Nova University,
and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Colorado. He is a ChildTrauma fellow
with the ChildTrauma Academy, and conducts professional training in Colorado, nationally and
internationally.

Empowerment Through the Body: Managing Trauma Symptoms

in Addiction Recovery
Trauma symptoms and addiction are often interrelated on the path to recovery and can be challenging to
navigate. As a survivor of the Columbine shooting, Austins personal journey into addiction by way of acute
trauma will illustrate the necessity for those in recovery to reclaim their personal efficacy in managing trauma
symptoms in order to experience lasting recovery. In this session we will explore the relationship between
trauma and addiction and how body based skills can support healing and long term recovery. Participants will
be able to identify co-occuring symptoms of trauma and addiction, describe the effect of boy-based skills on
trauma and addiction related distress, and plan for and facilitate body-based skills to increase self-efficacy in
managing trauma and addiction related distress.

Fatina Cannon, LPC, R-DMT

Clinical Director, NorthStar Transitions

Fatina Cannon is the Clinical Director at NorthStar Transitions and leads a team
of highly qualified and skilled therapists. She came to the addiction field by
way of trauma research and a desire to empower others who were self-harming
through substance and addiction based processes. Fatina is a Licensed Professional
Counselor, holds a Master Addiction Counselor credential and is a Registered Dance
Movement Therapist. Through her training in Naropas Somatic Counseling Masters
program, Fatina came to understand how body and movement based approaches
facilitate integration and choice in bodily experience which promotes capacity for
healing in behavioral health challenges.

Austin Eubanks

Program Director, The Foundry Treatment Center

Austin Eubanks came to the rehabilitation industry by way of his own personal
recovery after a decade-long career as an advertising executive. After years on
both the agency and the client sides of marketing, Austin found inspiration
through his own recovery to focus his professional talents on the behavioral health
and addiction treatment industry. He combines his professional background in
advertising and brand strategy with his personal experience in recovery to facilitate
progress in both program management and business development. Austins
approach helps bridge the gap between the administrative and clinical functions to
ultimately improve quality of care and business performance. An injured survivor
of the Columbine shooting, Austin has devoted his career to helping others who have journeyed into addiction
by way of acute trauma. He speaks nationally regarding the problems with over-prescribing medication and also
the benefits of treatment centered in empowerment vs. powerlessness.

Self Care for Helper: Our Strength is Our Weakness
Helping professionals who are at risk of suffering both short term and long term consequences from working
with traumatized clients. Exposure to high levels of stress and bearing witness to painful, humiliating, shameful,
and at times violent stories leaves it mark on the helper. In an attempt to cope with the stress of the work helpers
develop strategies that mirror the symptoms of their clients. This training will focus on increasing knowledge
and awareness of the relationship between work related stress and burnout, compassion fatigue and secondary
trauma. Participants will learn strategies to decrease risk and increase resilience. Participants will understand
how connecting empathetically and compassionately with their clients creates a strain on their own coping
resources called Emotional Labor, and will increase knowledge and skills to increase their own protective
factors and increase health and work satisfaction.

BREAK OUT SESSION 3

3:00-4:05

Jasmine Aranda, LPC, CACII

The Foundry, Steamboat Springs, Colorado

The Chaotic Cyclical Effects of Addiction on the Family
There is a common held belief that addiction is an individual disorder. The belief goes something like, if the addict
recovers from their addiction, the family system will return to healthy functioning. Or, it is your problem, not
mine, you deal with. As many of my clients say, first thought wrong. Addiction takes a significant toll on the family.
The toll is so great most family members of someone with an addiction could benefit from treatment in order to
live a healthy, happy life. Secondly, if left untreated many family members will continue in the chaotic cycle, which
could result in them seeking out another person with an addiction or sabotaging their beloved family member. Join
Jasmine Aranda in the exploration of this toll and discovering the hope of recovery.
Jasmine Aranda is the Clinical Director at The Foundry, LLC. She has worked in the field of addiction for well
over twenty years. She is very dedicated to those suffering from addiction, as she understands what it is like
to find oneself in the menacing grip of addiction, not knowing how you got there and doubtful as to whether
you can find your way out. Her understanding and belief in those struggling with the obsessive, compulsive
illness fuels her to ensure those receiving treatment are getting a compassionate, individualized, professional,
high quality treatment experience that is effective. She has a Masters degree in Clinical Counseling from the
University of Northern Colorado, as well as a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado.
She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Addiction Counselor through the State of Colorado, and
has a National Addiction Certification II from NAADAC.

Turning Confrontation into Conversation Effective Communication with Older Adults
Based on research on the psychology of the older adult, this session focuses on understanding that this age group
is not in a period of decline but instead experiencing great growth. As with any other stage of development such

in communication with their families. This session focuses on the agenda driving the older adult and specific
language and interaction that help to diffuse confrontation and lead to more effective conversations.
Marti has over 20 years of sales, marketing and entrepreneurial experience. After starting her career in television
and print media she owned several successful businesses before transitioning into the senior living industry.

teams to reach and exceed targeted goals and occupancy. In her career she has worked with communities in a
variety of situations such as occupancy challenges, new construction and acquisitions. Her ability to partner
with her teams to develop strategic systems and specific training programs led to increased productivity and job
satisfaction among associates. Marti is an experienced public speaker, sales trainer and advocate in the senior
