Tasks:
1. Review the drawings and the structural design and nominate the location of the
construction joints that is to be submitted for approval to the design engineer.
2. For the first pour estimate the volume of concrete and tonnage of reinforcement.
(Note that the tonnage of reinforcement can be based on 150kg/m3 of concrete.
You do not have to measure the reinforcement) You should allow +5% waste.
3. Note that the slab is placed directly on the ground. Comment on the nature of the
structural design of the slabs based on the reinforcement details provided
considering geotechnical issues.
4. Based on the above, estimate the number of concrete trucks and delivery trucks.
(reinforcement trucks carry 12 tonne maximum. Concrete trucks carry 5m3 of
concrete and you can assume 3 trucks on site at any one time). Include other
vehicles as needed.
5. Provide a project time line for the forming, placement of reinforcement, placing
of services, placing and finishing the concrete and curing the concrete for 7 days.
Do this for the first pour only. The second and third pours will be identical.
6. Provide a traffic management plan for the timing and number of trucks entering
and leaving the site at the new England highway to suit your first pour program.
Note that the trucks will need to traverse the site via temporary construction
access. Provide a geotechnical brief to enable geotechnical assessment to be made
for the access road.
Present the above in a concise logical report to the head contractor for approval.
Suggested set out as follows:
o Introduction
o Data and analysis
o Calculations as applicable
o Detailed Project time line for pour one only. Other two pours identical to
give overall program
o Traffic management plan.
Learning Outcomes:
Learning outcomes for this assessment include the following:
1. Understand the basic principles of geo-mechanics and their application in
infrastructure development.
2. Understand design of structural elements.
