1 mark questions:
1 .A concave lens of refractive index 1.5 is immersed in a medium of refractive
index 1.65.
What is the nature of the lens ?
2. Why does bluish colour predominate in a clear sky ?
3. Write the condition under which an electron will move undeflected in the
presence of crossed electric and magnetic fields.
4. Draw the shape of the wavefront coming out of a convex lens when a plane
wave is incident on it.
5. In both and + decay processes, the mass number of a nucleus remains
same whereas the atomic number Z increases by one in decay and decreases
by one in + decay. Explain, giving reason.
2 mark questions
1. Distinguish between a metal and an insulator on the basis of energy band
diagrams
2. A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 150 cm and
eyepiece of focal length 5 cm. What is the magnifying power of the
telescope for viewing distant objects in normal adjustment ?If this
telescope is used to view a 100 m tall tower 3 km away, what is the height
of the image of the tower formed by the objective lens ?
3. When an electron in hydrogen atom jumps from the third excited state to
the ground state, how would the de Broglie wavelength associated with
the electron change ? Justify your answer.
4. A proton and an -particle have the same de-Broglie wavelength.
Determine the ratio of (i) their accelerating potentials (ii) their speeds.
5. Show that the radius of the orbit in hydrogen atom varies as n2,
where n is the principal quantum number of the atom.
3 mark questions:
1. (i)
A giant refracting telescope has an objective lens of focal length 15 m. If
an eye piece of focal length 1.0 cm is used, what is the angular
magnification of the telescope ? (ii) If this telescope is used to view the moon,
what is the diameter of the image of the moon formed by the objective lens ?
The diameter of the moon is 3.48 106 m and the radius of lunar orbit is 3.8
108 m.
2. Write Einsteins photoelectric equation and mention which important
features in photoelectric effect can be explained with the help of this equation.

The maximum kinetic energy of the photoelectrons gets doubled when the
wavelength of light incident on the surface changes from 1 to 2.Derive the
expressions for the threshold wavelength 0 and work function for the metal
surface.
3. With what considerations in view, a photodiode is fabricated ? State its
working with the help of a suitable diagram. Eventhough the current in the
forward bias is known to be more than in the reverse bias, yet the photodiode
works in reverse bias. What is the reason ?
4. (a) Two monochromatic waves emanating from two coherent sources have the
displacements represented by y 1 = a cos t and y 2 = a cos (t + ), where is
the phase difference between the two displacements. Show that the resultant
intensity at a point due to their superposition is given by I = 4 Io cos2 /2, where
Io = a2. (b) Hence obtain the conditions for constructive and destructive
interference.
5. The value of ground state energy of hydrogen atom is 13.6 eV and Bohr
radius is 0.53 . Calculate (i) the energy required to move an electron from the
ground state to the second excited state. (ii) (a) the kinetic energy and (b) the
orbital radius in the second excited state of the atom.
5 mark questions
1. (a) A point object is placed in front of a double convex lens (of refractive index
n = n2/ n1 with respect to air) with its spherical faces of radii of curvature R1 and
R2 . Show the path of rays due to refraction at first and subsequently at the
second surface to obtain the formation of the real image of the object. Hence
obtain the lens-makers formula for a thin lens.
(b) A double convex lens having both faces of the same radius of curvature has
refractive index 1.55. Find out the radius of curvature of the lens required to get
the focal length of 20 cm.
2. (a) How does one demonstrate, using a suitable diagram, that unpolarised
light when passed through a Polaroid gets polarised ?
(b) A beam of unpolarised light is incident on a glass-air interface. Show, using a
suitable ray diagram, that light reflected from the interface is totally polarised,
when p : tan is, where p is the refractive index of glass with respect to air and i,
is the Brewster's angle
