Contract Management Officer

1. PROJECT STATUS
The road watering project started April 24, 2016. Updates for the construction
of Cistern Tank and Earth Dam, Hose layout and Sprinkler installation is as
follows.
1.1.

CISTERN TANK CONSTRUCTION

The dimension of the cistern tank is 5m X 5m x 5m concrete cube having a

partition wall with a thickness of 200mm. Base of the tank will be 1m below
natural ground level to have a secure footing. A manhole with a diameter of
2.2m will be situated at the top slab of the tank to serve as an entry / exit when
conducting maintenance activities. Rubber water stop will also be installed to
prevent leakage of water at joints of the concrete cube. The cistern tank is sited
at the boundary of NMY 1 and NMY 2 at an elevation of 67m above sea level.
Upon inspection, concrete pouring at the second layer of the exterior wall is
ongoing, shown in fig.1. Base footing and the first layer of the exterior wall is
completed. Construction of the exterior wall is divided into three phases to
allow for the reuse of forms. Table 1 shows the estimated percent completion of
the cistern tank.

1.2.

EARTH DAM CONSTRUCTION

The earth dam is located at camp 3 beside the old nursery building. It is
designed to contain 325cu.m. of water to have sufficient supply to refill the
cistern tank. The design of the earth dam includes a spillway to provide
release of overflow from the dam into the downstream area. Water source for
the earth dam will be from a local spring at Camp 3 supported by drainage
water from mine pits upstream.
Upon inspection, the collection pond is 91% completed while the spillway is 26
% as shown in table 2. The collection pond still lacks boulder lining which will
be constructed after the concreting of the spillway, shown in fig. 2 while the
spillway is currently ongoing form works, rebar installation and gravel bedding
layout in preparation for concreting, shown in fig. 3. Table 2 shows the
estimated percentage completion of the earth dam.

HOSE LAYOUT

Water supply line for the irrigation is 3.85Km from the proposed earth dam
location to causeway. Hose layout is performed by sections so as not to disturb
hauling for mine and shipment operations. Initial excavations were executed
along Alpha road going to the proposed earth dam at camp 3 which was
followed by the layout of hose and backfilling of silt material before reinstalling
the excavated head size boulders to restore the strength of the haul road.
Upon inspection, 2,391m out of 3,850m was already laid out, shown in Table 3.
Excavation along the road was already at NPY road simultaneously followed by
the layout of hose. Fig. 4 and Fig.5 shows the layout of hose along NMY 1 and
NPY 2 respectively. Annex 1 shows the location map of the on-going layout of
hose.

SPRINKLER INSTALLATION
Sprinklers were installed for portions which have already been laid out with
hoses as mentioned earlier. 60 out of 103 sprinklers has already been installed
along the portions of NMY 3, NMY 2, NMY 1, first half of NPY 1 road. The
installed sprinklers cover a total of 1,800m out of 3,210m. Fig. 6 and 7 shows
the installed water sprinkler along NMY 2 road to NMY 3 road. Annex 1 shows
the location map of the sprinklers installed.

2. OTHER OPERATIONAL CONCERNS

2.1.
It was agreed by both parties that the backfill to be used in covering of
the hose is silt material from recovered from silt ponds.
2.2.
On May 15, 2016, there was a report regarding the damaged sprinkler
which is believed to be run over by a Road Grader while performing road
repairs / maintenance. This has been raised to Mine Operations Division and
has taken extra caution while performing road maintenance works.
2.3.
Major delays encountered for the first half of the project were due to the
procurement of additional materials and supplies and processing of service
contracts brought by the recent national election.
2.4.
Some of the sprinklers installed along Alpha road poses hazard for both
the sprinkler and vehicles passing by. It was recommended that the sprinklers
will be relocated at the safety berm.
