New Products
NEW ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Liftonin (N)
INCI: Aqua, Glycerin, Panicum Miliaceum Seed Extract (Millet Seed), Tannic Acid, Potassium Sorbate (0.2%).

Origin: Switzerland. Shelf life: 2 years. Ecocert approved (Note: our suppliers, Rahn Cosmetics hold the Ecocert
certification for this product, not Aromantic). Liftonin is approved for use in natural and organic formulations.
It is GMO-free, mineral-free and heavy metal-free. Not tested on animals.
Liftonin is an active ingredient complex against skin aging. It has been specially designed to improve the skin
structure. Its active ingredients are botanical silicon from millet and skin-tautening tannins from the oak. In vivo
studies with only 2% Liftonin confirm an improved skin structure by reducing wrinkles and lines, as well as a
generally younger appearance. Dosage: 2-5%. Water-soluble. Best added to your product under 40C.

Botanical silicon
Botanical silicon with high bio-availability promotes the production of the skin's structural proteins. The new
production of collagen and glucosamine glucans is accelerated. The skin profile is improved from within.

Tannins from the oak

Tannins from the oak have an astringent and tautening effect. As natural complexing agents they neutralise
harmful metal ions and protect the skin with their anti-oxidative properties.

NEW FATS AND WAXES

Soya Wax (N)
INCI: Glycine, Soy Wax.

A totally natural and vegan blended wax based on ethically and non-GMO sourced
soya, which is also known in the trade as Eco Wax as it ethically sourced, even though
not organic. 100% Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (hydrogenated from a freezing point of
-8C to a melting point of approximately 66-72C). During this hydrogenation process
the unsaturated fatty acids in the soya oil becomes saturated and therefore solid.
Soya Wax is mainly used to make candles and it used in cosmetics. It is oil and fatsoluble and insoluble in water.
When used for candle-making it has excellent fragrance-holding qualities whilst having the ability to throw its

aroma when burning. It is significantly cleaner burning than traditional waxes, burns slower and lasts longer
than paraffin.
For use in natural cosmetics, Soya Wax gives a very good consistency to Lip Balms and Lipsticks. It is an excellent
alternative in balms and ointments to Vaseline in as it has the same skin feeling, without the drawbacks of a
mineral product (not that we expect any of you are using Vaseline!). Soya Wax can also be used in fatty
creams or protective creams.
To make vegan lip balms in lip balm cylinders, you can replace the beeswax with soya wax. As Soya Wax has a
higher melting point than Beeswax, you need approximately 15% less Soya Wax in your recipe so, if you are
using 20g of beeswax in your recipe, you only need to use 17g of Soya Wax, replacing the 3g difference with
3ml/g of vegetable oils.
Please see pages 23-24 for your free Soya Wax Recipes for Lip Balms and Balms/Ointments!

NEW SPA PRODUCTS

Due to inconsistent deliveries from our Seaweed Spa Products supplier in Ireland,
we have now found a new seaweed spa products supplier in Brittany in France
who also make products for brands such as Talgo, Academy, Clarins and LOreal.
Aromantic has carefully chosen products from their range that are natural and
they also have organic raw materials in their range. Unfortunately this supplier
also produces some products that contain raw materials I personally wouldnt
touch and often contain especially harsh preservatives so, as always, we had to
take great care to find the right products for you. It was tricky as some of their
products contained both excellent raw materials together with very poor choices
in my opinion. The result is that we are delighted to stock three new natural
Seaweed Spa Products with excellent natural ingredients.
Our new Seaweed Body Wrap has the same raw materials (in different
proportions: there is more of Laminaria digitata in the new one compared to
Lithothamnium calcareum) as our former Seaweed Face Mask but its
formulated for use as A Whole Body Wrap. Note: Whilst we dont have any
new Seaweed Face Masks from Brittany as yet, we are looking into this and of
course, we still stock our high quality, popular French Peel-off Beauty Face
Mask and Body Wrap (Ref: 260).

Seaweed Body Wrap (N)

INCI: Laminaria digitata, Lithothamnium calcareum, Sodium chloride (sea salt)

Origin: Brittany coast, France. A body wrap provides both therapeutic and cosmetic benefits. The Seaweed Body
Wrap is an extremely rich blend of micronized plants or seaweed formulated to create a rich and generous and
nutrient-dense paste. This product replaces our Irish Seaweed Body Wrap. Keeps for 2 years.

A slimming & remineralizing body wrap for thalassotherapy

Aromantics Seaweed Body Wrap is a professionally designed fine powder that is easily mixed with water to

obtain a rich paste. Ideal for slimming spa rituals and for thalassotherapy treatments, this wrap is rich in
micronized Laminaria & Lithothamnium, which allow active ingredients to liberate instantaneously during the
treatment thanks to the micronization process.

Combination of two seaweeds, Lithothamnium and Laminaria, for an intense

shaping treatment
Seaweeds contain trace elements, iodine and mineral salts, necessary for refining treatments. The combination
of Laminaria and Lithothamnium increases the slimming action during the treatment. Lithothamnium provides
its minerals and marine salts, and promotes the breakdown and elimination of fat. The iodine contained in
Laminaria has slimming properties and helps combat cellulite and fatty deposits.
Lithothamnium belongs to the red seaweed family and lives in clean water from 10 to 30m deep.
Lithothamnium is extracted by pump dredgers on Breton coasts (the Moraix Bay and the Glenans islands). The
seaweed looks like coral, and is known as coral sands. Its fragile and calcareous fronds are rich in numerous
marine elements and trace elements (more than 32). These are important elements for remineralizing and
detoxifying the skin. The fronds have high porosity, enabling the absorption and availability of trace elements.
Lithothamnium is used in many industries, such as cosmetics (thalassotherapy), health foods, pollution
remediation products, feedstock products, etc. It is used in spa treatments to help detoxify the skin, draw out
impurities and restore tone and vitality. Mineral content helps to disperse local fatty deposits to ensure soft,
fresh, and healthy skin.

Directions for use

Use 250g for full body treatment. Mix 250g of powder with 500ml of warm water until you get an homogeneous
paste. Apply it with a spatula directly to the skin. Wrap the person in a plastic film and a warming blanket. Leave
on for 15 to 30 minutes.

Self-Heating Body Wrap (N)

INCI: Talc, Laminaria digitata, Fumaric acid, Sodium chloride (sea salt), Magnesium oxide, Maris Limus (sea silt),
Spirulina maxima.

Origin: Mainly Brittany coast, France. The Algae self-heating Body Wrap is formulated with micronized seaweed,
well-known for their detoxifying & remineralizing properties. Keeps for 2 years.
This very fine powder turns into an effervescent & self-heating paste when mixed with water. While the
temperature gently rises, the wrap releases its marine actives. Ideal as a thalassotherapy treatment, its
progressively heating effect and its natural effervescence create a genuine feeling of well-being and relieve
stress.

Seaweed, marine silts and fumaric acid for a multi-action treatment

This body Wrap is a combination of Spirulina, Laminaria, Marine silts and Fumaric Acid. Spirulina is a natural
source of amino acids that are necessary to restore the firming tissues and vitamins A & E and acts as a skin
toner. Laminaria provides organic iodine, marine salts and mannitol, having respectively slimming,
remineralizing and moisturizing properties. Marine silts contain numerous trace elements and show greater
proved therapeutic characteristics than other clays. Fumaric acid along with other ingredients in the Body Wrap

NEW ORGANIC BLENDED ESSENTIAL OILS

FOR DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES!
(10% Organic Essential Oil Blends* in 90% Organic Sunflower Oil)
We are delighted to introduce a new range of organic essential oil blends in 90% organic
sunflower oil formulated by our very own Mike Harmon who, as many of you will know, is a
clinical aromatherapist who is also very skilled at formulating and making natural skin and hair care products in
the Aromantic style.
After Mike designed and developed his Essential Oil Modules 1-4 , I asked Mike to develop different essential oil
blends for different skin types. After carefully assessing Mikes suggestions and receiving feedback from staff
and course participants, we have chosen these four blends. They are ideal for enhancing tailor-made/
prescription products that you make up for your therapy clients or for a skin care range catering for different
skin types. You can add it to any product that you can add vegetable oils to, such as creams, gels, vegetable oil
blends and serums, whether youre making them from scratch or you simply want to add the blend to readymade products, it couldnt be easier! They also make great stocking fillers!
*Note: All essential oils and absolutes in these skin type blends, are organic except the rose otto, which is nonorganic. There is only 1% of rose otto in each of the two blends it occurs in, (Dry And Mature Blends) so
therefore the blends still qualify for use in organic products as each blend is well above the 95% required for a
product to be called organic or used in organic products. Dosage: Use 1-2% of the blend in your products.

Aromantic Dry Skin Blend (Organic)

INCI: Helianthus anuus (90%)*; Santalum spicatum*; Lavendula angustifolia*; Citrus auranticum*;
Rosa damascena; Jasminum glandiflorum*; Helichyrsum italicum*. *Organic ingredients.

Lavender Fine Population, French (Organic); Neroli (Organic); Rose Otto (non-Organic);
Jasmine (Organic); Helichrysum (Organic). Dosage: Mix 1-2% of the blend into your products.

though it rehydrates dry skin, it also has an astringent effect so tones the skin and makes it firmer.
Lavender Fine Population, French (Organic) - one of the best things it does is to act as a synergist. Whatever the
attributes of the other essential oils in a blend, lavender seems to make those oils work even harder by being
included. Calming and soothing.
Neroli (Organic) - One of the ultimate oils for skin care. It tones the skin and helps to reduce wrinkles. Excellent
moisturising properties make sit perfect for a dry skin blend.
Rose Otto (non-Organic) - a good skin care oil for all skin types but especially helping with dry skin. Caution Do
not use during pregnancy.

New Information regarding the
use of Natural Surfactant Base
together with Fat Restorer
When I introduced these two new raw materials I unfortunately listened
to the products producers on how to use them. Although I was illadvised, and there has been nothing wrong with the performance of the
product made following their guidelines, the Body Washes, Shampoos
and Cleansers were a bit too runny.
To change the Body Wash to a creamier and thicker consistency , I now recommend using 10% Natural Fat
Restorer instead of the initially recommended dosage of 1-3%. To stabilise the consistency, I also added 1%
Xanthan Gum to the updated recipes below.

New Tips for using Cold Emulsifier (Organic)
When making creams and lotions with Cold Emulsifier, the method is that you use a gel along with the with the
Cold Emulsifier and other ingredients. Usually we have recommended that you use cellulose to make the gel but
Mike Harmon has been doing some testing and has found that you can replace the usual Cellulose with Konjac
Glucomannan Powder as a gel thickener for making the gel that you need to add to the Cold Emulsifier when
making creams and lotions. 1g/1% is enough in the gel recipe to make a lotion. And 1.3-1.5% in the gel recipe to
make a cream. Follow the recipes you have in all other respects.
Creams and lotions made with Cold Emulsifier and Konjac Glucomannan Powder dont have that sticky skin
feeling you get when you use Cellulose as the gel thickener.
Konjac Glucomannan Powder creates the same nice skin feeling that you get from an artificial carbomer, but of
course it is natural!

Konjac Glucomannan Powder Gel for cold emulsifying use

Here we would normally use cellulose to make the gel but we have substituted it with Konjac Glucomannan.
1.3-1.5g Konjac Glucomannan Powder (if for a Cream)/1g Konjac Glucomannan Powder (if for a Lotion)
97.4ml/g COLD Water
1ml/g Preservative Eco or 1ml/g Preservative 12

Method for making Konjac Glucomannan Powder Gel

Sprinkle the measured Konjac Glucomannan Powder over the COLD water and whisk continuously until
it thickens. [NB You must use cold water in this recipe as if you use boiling water with this amount of
Konjac Glucomannan Powder the gel will thicken too fast and it will be impossible to work with.]
Add the preservative.
Cool down.
Store in an airtight container if not using immediately.

Skin Rejuvenation
Actives - which one is
best for your skin care product?
As you will know we supply very exciting natural active ingredients for skin rejuvenation. Each has their unique
properties as I see no point in providing different raw materials with exactly the same properties. Here is a very
short overview of a few of them (excluding Active Moisturisers like Hyaluronic Acid) and their effects on the
skin.

Remodelling Intense (N)

Q-10 plus E (N)

Dosage: 2%. Oil-soluble.

Remodelling Intense is based on a natural active ingredient
which has been proven to restructure and firm the face and
body, by stimulating fibroblasts and reorganising the
dermis, leading to firmer and smoother skin. Tested in vivo
at 2%, the product is claimed to smooth the skins
microrelief from the first application, with a 50% reduction
in the wrinkled surface. After 28 days the results are said to
be even more profound.

Dosage: 0.5-2%.
Oil-soluble.
Coenzyme Q10 is essential for "cell
breathing" and energy transportation in
the mitochondria and is essential to
generate energy (ATP) for the body. From
about 40-50 years of age the coenzyme
Q10 serum levels in the body start to
decrease. After topical application of Q10
plus E, skin enzymes will release the active
antioxidants tocopherol and ubiquinol.
The ability of the skin to regenerate itself
is strongly supported by coenzyme Q10
which also reduces the depth of wrinkles.

Liftonin (N)
Dosage: 2-5%. Water-soluble.
See more info on pages 3 as well as pages 17-23 of this
Newsletter. Improves skin structure. Has tannins from oak,
which are astringent and skin-tautening. Liftonin contains
botanical silicon from millet, which has high bio-availability
thereby promoting the production of the skin's structural
proteins. The new production of collagen and glucosamine
glucans is accelerated gives skin a silky feeling. The skin
profile is improved from within. The other active ingredient
in Liftonin are tannins from oak, which have an astringent
and tautening effect. As natural complexing agents they
neutralise harmful metal ions and protect the skin with
their anti-oxidative properties. Studies show reduced lines
and wrinkles and younger skin appearance.

Silicone, Natural (N)

Dosage: 0.5-2%.
Water-soluble.
Promotes production of collagen/elastin.
It improves the sensory impact of your
formulas, giving a velvety, silky, after feel,
while forming a delicate non-occlusive
(breathable) protective film on the skin.

Lupine Peptides (N)

Dosage: 0.1-1%. Water-soluble.
Works as a MMP Inhibitor, helping to stop the destruction
of connective tissue such as collagen & elastin, thereby
preventing chronic photoaging when we are exposed to the
sun, giving the skin a younger look and diminishing fine
wrinkles. Helps to renew the skins outer layer
(extracellular matrix) and reduce the depth of wrinkles.

More about Liftonin

Wrinkles and lines
The wrinkles and lines in our skin say a lot about us. There are culture groups in
which the social prestige is essentially determined by age. Their wrinkles are
regarded as a sign of experience in life.
In our society, youth is an attribute for a positive personality. In many areas of Fig. 1 No secrets wrinour society, a youthful and well-groomed appearance is seen as an essential kles betray a lot about our
factor if not a precondition for success.
age and lifestyle.
Wrinkles play an important role in this appearance. They are an easily recognised
sign of skin ageing. Their occurrence is predetermined by numerous intrinsic factors such as age, gender, race or
genes. External factors such as UV light, diet, nicotine and alcohol misuse also influence their occurrence.
The occurrence of wrinkles can, of course, be influenced by appropriate skin care.

What types of wrinkle are there?

Wrinkles are changes in the skin that are visible with the naked eye. A distinction is made between two main

forms: Mimic wrinkles and permanent wrinkles.

Mimic wrinkles
Mimic wrinkles are temporary wrinkles. They are the result of the repeated tensioning of all the face muscles.
They occur particularly in the areas around the eyes, the nose and the mouth. They disappear, however, when
the skin relaxes again. Depending on the age of the skin and the localisation, they can develop into permanent
wrinkles.

Fig. 2 Mimic wrinkles are an important means of communication. They

signal sadness, joy or excitation. Permanent wrinkles occur as we get
older. They say a lot about our lifestyle, but also about our skin care.

Permanent wrinkles
Permanent wrinkles occur with increasing age. They are visible and lasting. They are undesirable for cosmetic
reasons.

How do permanent wrinkles occur?

The physiology and appearance of the human skin changes with increasing age. The structure changes with a
loss of tautness, elasticity and smoothness. Wrinkles occur in the slack skin and the subcutaneous fatty tissue
decreases. These changes are the first and foremost expression of a general ageing of the subcutaneous
connective tissue of the dermis.
The connective tissue fibres consist of the proteins collagen and elastin. The differently oriented collagen fibre
bundles provide the tension within the connective tissue. In young skin, a complex network with an intersecting
and spiral arrangement of these collagen fibres is recognisable. Gradual losses in density, strength and
orientation occur with increasing age.
A reduction in the glucosamine glucans, the basic substance of the connective and supporting tissue, also causes
this layer to lose liquid. This leads to deterioration in the youthful turgidity and skin tension.

Morphological changes in skin wrinkles

The most important factors that contribute to the morphological occurrence of wrinkles are:
a) The epidermis becomes thinner and has fewer layers.
b) The differentiation and flaking of skin cells becomes
irregular.
c) The junction between the dermis and epidermis (DEJ) is
weakened by the loss of collagen IV and VII.
d) Irregular deposits of abnormal elastic tissue in the dermis
(but not under the wrinkles)
e) Loss of skin collagen III under the wrinkles leads to a
deepening of the wrinkles with time

Raw Material Information about Liftonin

The treatment concept of LIFTONIN
LIFTONIN is an active ingredient complex against skin aging. It has been especially designed to improve the skin
structure. Its active ingredients are botanical silicon from millet and skin-tautening tannins from the oak. In vivo
studies with LIFTONIN confirm an improved skin structure by reducing wrinkles and lines, as well as a generally
younger appearance.

LIFTONIN - a dual functional principle

Botanical silicon with high bio-availability promotes the production of the skins structural proteins. This
improves the skins mechanical properties. Tannins from the oak have an astringent and tautening effect. As
natural complexing agents, they also neutralise harmful metal ions and protect the skin with their anti-oxidative
properties.

The components of the active ingredient complex LIFTONIN

Silicon the trace element for beauty
Silicon is one of the most interesting and most versatile chemical elements. It is second to only oxygen as the
most widespread element on earth. The name comes from the Latin word silex for pebble. In its natural form
it is always bonded to oxygen. In undisturbed nature it is found in quartz and mountain crystals. In living nature
it is particularly found in plants. Silicon is a vital trace element for the human organism. The biologically active
form of silicon is orthosilicic acid (Fig. 4d).

Fig. 4: Silicon is found in a wide range of forms: From left to right: (a) The aquamarine consists of silicon
dioxide, (b) aqueous silica gel consists of a network of condensed silicic acid, (c) organically bound silica gel
stabilises the cell structure of millet, (d) orthosilicic acid forms the foundation for all silicon compounds found
in nature.

Silicon in our body

Silicon is an essential constituent in humans for all firm tissue. Our body contains a total of 1.4 grams of silicon.
Silicon occurs in all connective tissue structures and is therefore to be found in practically all organs, blood
vessels, skin and hair. Practically all tissue gains strength from a good supply of silicon.
With increasing age, the bodys silicon content decreases. A shortage of silicon has typical visible symptoms
such as slack connective tissue, matt split hair and broken fingernails. An acute lack of silicon can lead to
osteoporosis and a faulty bone structure.

Silicon in the skin

The elasticity and resilience of the skin decreases with increasing age. The mechanical properties of the skin lose
their uniformity. A lack of silicon contributes additionally to a breakdown of the collagen and the glucosamine
glucans. Scientific studies have proved that the collagen Type I is only formed properly in the presence of silicon.
The content of hydroxyprolin, the main constituent of collagen, is drastically reduced in the absence of silicon,
and the activity of the ornithine aminotransferase, an important enzyme for the collagen synthesis, decreases.
In vitro experiments on skin fibroblasts confirm these findings: In the presence of the co-factor silicon, the

collagen synthesis of the cells is significantly increased.

Bio-availability through botanical silicon

The biological activity of silicon is highly dependent on its chemical form. Even the finest silicon dioxide is
biologically inactive. It cannot be absorbed by the body. Orthosilicic acid, on the other hand, is easily assimilated
by the body. This is the biologically active form of silicon. Botanical sources of silicon are to be found in
numerous types of cereal, in particular in millet. This natural source of orthosilicic acid is rich in bio-available
silicon.

Tannins natural astringents

The tannins (taken from the French tanin = tanning agent) are naturally occurring polyphenols that can all be
derived from gallic acid. That is why one also speaks of gallotannins. The best known compound of this
substance group from which its takes its name is the gallotannin.
Tannins belong to the vegetable secondary substances, i.e. they are not directly involved in the biological
metabolism and are not incorporated into biological macromolecules.
Tannins are active ingredients with the following biological activities:
(A) Astringent, contracting effect on tissue
(B) Complexing of metal ions
(C) Biological antioxidants

Tannins astringents from the gall nuts of the oak tree

The oak tree is regarded as the symbol for eternity. First mentioned in literature by the Roman author Quintus
Ennius (239 BC), the Latin name for the oak, quercus, is found in old religions, myths and legends.
Oak trees can live to become over 1000 years old. This is an expression of their sturdiness and resistance. They
stand up to fluctuating climatic conditions, storms and parasites. Their physiological and biochemical processes
take place with extreme stability and consistency. Few external influences can affect their steadfastness.
An important role here is played by polyphenolic substances, including tannins. These are bioactive vegetable
secondary substances that have protective functions within the oak tree.

Fig. 6: The oak tree a symbol for eternity. From left to right: (a) oak tree, (b) oak leaves, (c) gall nuts on
the underside of an oak leaf.
Tannins are produced among other places in the round gall nut found on the underside of oak leaves (Fig. 6).

Method and test conditions

The influence of LIFTONIN on the skin structure was investigated in an in vivo
study. The investigation was performed as a single blind study in parallel groups. A total of 31 female test
persons took part. The average age of the test persons was 48.
The test product contained 2% LIFTONIN. It was tested against a placebo (with 0% LIFTONIN).
The test products were applied to the face twice a day. The treatment period was
28 days. The measurements were performed on day 0 before the first treatment and finally on day 28.

LASER profilometry was employed as the test method. The wrinkle region alongside the eyes was investigated.
The evaluation of the LASER profilometry provides data (a) on the microstructure
of the skin, (b) on the wrinkle depth and (c) on the networking of the skin.

Results and effectiveness

Improvement in the skin structure in vivo study with LIFTONIN
After 28 days treatment, the appearance of the skin was significantly improved (see Fig. 8). The smoothing
effect can be seen from the height profile of the test section. The effect is also optically clearly visible (righthand side of Fig. 8).

The network structure (isotropy) of the skin in vivo study

The more networked the skin, the younger it appears. The orientation of young skin is irregular and random
(Fig. 10a). With increasing skin ageing, the lines run more and more parallel. The orientation increases (Fig, 10b).
The measure of the orientation, also referred to as isotropy, is thus an indicative value for assessing
the improvement in the skin structure.

softening and protecting it. The Soya Wax protects the skin whilst giving
the healing balm its consistency. The Vegetable Oils, Botanical CO2
Extracts and Essential Oils you choose to add to your balm will
determine its specific healing benefits. Using Soya Wax instead of

Fat Stage: Heat the fat stage ingredients in a double boiler

using the SMALL bowl until all the ingredients have melted
and the temperature has risen to above 75C. There is no
need to use a whisk at this stage. Only when the
temperature has been reached, start stage 2.
Water Stage: After boiling the spring water in a kettle,
measure it according to the recipe and pour it over the other
raw materials, which you have put in the LARGE bowl.
Whisk the water stage ingredients well together making sure
that that the MF Emulsifier powder is fully dissolved in the
water and that you don't have any lumps. Then put the large
bowl in a double boiler and let the temperature rise to above
75C. When both stages are above 75C pour the fat stage
into the water stage. Ensure the temperature is still above
75C.
Now continuously whisk the mixture from side to side for 5
minutes. Do NOT aerate the mixture. Keep the temperature
up and by leaving the bowl in the saucepan.
After the 5 minutes the mixture needs to be cooled down.
Keep stirring and put the bowl in a saucepan of COLD water.
As it cools down, the mixture thickens up and becomes a
cream. It will reach its thickest consistency when it reaches
room temperature.
Third Stage: When the mixture has cooled to under 40C, stir
in the third stage ingredients.
Fourth Stage: Add the Aloe Vera Gel little by little.
Fifth Stage: Stir in the Essential oils. Pour the cream into jars
and label.
