Cameron And Clegg
Form New Government

BRITAIN’S first coalition govern-
ment in seven decades held its inau-
gural meeting May 13, as members
of once-rival parties sat around
the Cabinet table together – and
signaled their seriousness about
deficit-slashing by agreeing to an
immediate pay cut.
Conservative Prime Minister David
Cameron presided over the gathering,
sitting across from his deputy, Liberal
Democrat leader Nick Clegg.
There are 18 Conservative ministers and
five Liberal Democrats in the new Cabinet.
The two parties forged a coalition govern-
ment – Britain’s first since World War II –
after last month’s national election produced
a hung Parliament, in which no party had an
overall majority. The Tories won 306 of the
650 House of Commons seats, the Labour
Party 258 and the Lib Dems 57.
Cameron filled out his government team
later with a slew of junior ministerial ap-
pointments and visited key government
departments to speak to civil servants.
“The more I think about this endeavor
on which we have embarked, the more ex-
cited I become,” Cameron told staff at the
Department for Business, Innovation and
Skills. “Because this coalition government,
if we can make it work – and I believe we
can – is a five-year government.”
PRIORITY
Among the first acts of the new Cabi-
net, which has said deficit-cutting is its
top priority, was agreeing to take a five
percent pay cut and subsequent five-year
salary freeze that the government says will
save taxpayers £300,000 a year. The move
leaves the prime minister’s annual salary
at £142,000 £65,000 for sitting as a law-
maker. Other ministers get slightly less.
Clegg spoke with US Vice President
Joe Biden, after Cameron held phone talks
with Obama.
“They looked forward to close coop-
eration between their governments on
the shared challenges of Afghanistan,
the global economy and international
security,” Britain’s Cabinet Office said in
a statement. Clegg “stressed that the US
and the UK acting in harness could make
a dramatic difference.”

AGREEMENT
The right-of-center Conservatives and
the center-left Lib Dems have hammered
out a policy agreement with compromises
on both sides. The third-place Lib Dems
get moves toward the electoral reform
they have long cherished, while the Tories
retain key platform planks including an
annual cap on immigration and cuts to
public spending to reduce Britain’s bal-
looning deficit.
Duncan Smith said the government’s
main task was “to get the economy back
on track.”
A BBC survey of economists who ad-
vise the Treasury department found that
most are predicting that the government
will raise sales taxes to slash the record
£153bn deficit.
Most of those questioned predicted an
increase in value added tax from its cur-
rent 17.5 percent to 20 percent before the
end of 2011.

refused to rule out the tax increase on
BA Cabin Crew Strike Amidst Confusion
THOUSANDS of British Airways cabin
crew went on strike May 23 after talks
between their union and the airline ended
in confusion.
This came after the union made a last-
minute offer to stop the walkout if the
airline reinstates travel perks stripped from
staff who took place in earlier strikes.
There was no agreement two days later
when the two sides held talks for over six
hours but were unable to come to an agree-
ment and adjourned until May 28.
Tony Woodley, joint leader of the Unite
union, said his message to BA chief execu-
tive Willie Walsh was “Willie, turn round
and reinstate our people’s travel without
the unnecessary vindictive removal of
their service and this union will call off
tonight’s strike.”
British Airways’ response was cool. In
a statement, the airline said it was “disap-
pointed that Tony Woodley has taken to
negotiation through the media” rather
than mediators.

sweeping reforms to Parliament, civil

Cameron’s office announced Conser-
vative lawmaker David Lidington and
Liberal Democrat Jeremy Browne would
serve as junior ministers at Britain’s For-
eign Office, under Conservative foreign
secretary William Hague.
The Labour Party, relegated to opposi-
tion after 13 years in power, is facing a
leadership contest following the resignation
of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
So far only ex-Foreign Secretary David
Miliband has announced his candidacy, but
others are expected to follow – including,
perhaps, Miliband’s younger brother Ed.
Brown, meanwhile, confirmed that he
will continue to sit in Parliament as a back-
bench Labour lawmaker. His predecessor,
Tony Blair, quit the House of Commons
when he stepped down as prime minister
in June 2007.
Visiting a college in his Scottish home
town of Kirkcaldy, Brown said he hoped
to remain in Parliament “for these next few
months and years.”
“I may have given up one job, but the
job that I love in politics is to be your
Member of Parliament, and I hope we’ll
be able to work together,” he said.
BA said it had “already offered to
reinstate travel concessions to cabin crew
once all elements of our offer have been
implemented.”
BA cabin crew are due to hold a series of
strikes totaling 15 days in a long-running
dispute over jobs, pay and working condi-
tions. The first of the walkouts is due to
last five days.
CHAOTIC
Earlier, Woodley had said there was no
chance of resuming negotiations before
the strike deadline. Those discussions, at
the offices of a mediation service, ended
abruptly when left-wing protesters broke
into the building.
Woodley said the talks had made
“fantastic progress” and an agreement
was close.
The airline says it plans to operate most
of its flights during the strike, including
more than half of flights from London’s
Heathrow airport and all at Gatwick.

and the housing crisis have not affected the
wealthiest people in Britain, according to the
Sunday Times Rich List, that reveals that the
1,000 richest Britons increased their income
by over a third last year. The top four richest
people in Britain, remain in the same order
as last year. Steel tycoon Laksmi Mittai
heads the list reputedly worth £22.4bn, with
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich second
with £7.4bn. The wealthiest Englishman, the
Duke of Westminister is third, whose London
property empire earned him £6.7bn. Ernesto
and Kirsty Bertarelli remain in fourth place
with their pharmaceuticals investments,
while Kirsty is regarded as the richest woman
in Britain. Biggest climbers in the list are
retailers Galen and George Weston (£4.5bn)
that moved from 47th last year to this year’s

‘Fairytale’ Pink Scottish
Castle Open To Public Again
SCOTLAND’S famous pink castle has re-
opened to the public after a major renova-
tion project that cost half a million pounds
had shut the property down for two years.
Craigievar Castle located 10 miles south of
Alford in Aberdeenshire, boasts the kind of
fairytale architectural that must have influ-
enced Walt Disney when he built his Magic
Kingdom. The pink colour comes from the
weatherproofing technique called harling,
which is evident on other castles and build-
ings of this era. A mixture of small pebbles
and chips of stone or granite, mixed with a
lime coloured wash was used as outside
plaster that effectively held the Scottish
climate at bay. The compact seven storey, L-
plan defence structure was renowned as the
epitome of Jacobean Renaissance when it
was built in 1626, by a rich merchant named
William Forbes. It became the home of Clan
Forbes-Sempill, but was taken over by the
National Trust of Scotland in 2006.

FREE AT LAST!
AFTER 13 years’ hard Labour, Britain is finally free from the shackles of social-
ism and now has a new government.
Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg finally came to an
arrangement to rule by coalition, with concessions on both sides.
To form a stable government, it was
agreed that there would not be another elec-
tion until May 15, 2015. According to the
Mayan calendar, the world is due to end in
2012, so we may not get another election
after all!
At least we now have a stronger parliament
than if Mr Cameron decided to govern alone,
and it remains to be seen just how much can
now be achieved. The first task is to reduce
the country’s horrendous debt (even worse
than mine!) and to stabilise the economy.
There will be hard decisions to make,
and forecasters say that the government
will undoubtedly become unpopular in the
process, but the end result should make it
all worthwhile (we hope).
HOSTAGE TO DIPLOMACY
A secret diary written in shorthand with a
pencil smuggled into the writer’s “cell” – this
is the stuff that spy thrillers are made of.
But this actually happened to my good
friend Anthony Grey, then Reuters corre-
spondent in China, who just happened to be
in the wrong place (although journalistically
in the right place) at the wrong time during
the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
He was imprisoned by the Chinese Red
Guards and placed under house arrest in
1967 in retaliation for actions taken by the
British Government in Hong Kong. Several
Chinese journalists were arrested there, and
until their release there would be no freedom
for Grey.
June 23 sees the re-launch of Anthony
Grey’s latest book: The Hostage Handbook
after an earlier launch in Norwich, where the
writer lives. In it he relates how he decided
to keep a diary (memories of Ann Frank?) in
which he describes graphically his experi-
ences, written with a pencil smuggled into
his “cell” under the noses of his Chinese
captors.
He tells of the often mindless and inhuman
behaviour of his guards, 200 of whom in-
vaded his home in Peking (now Beijing) near
the Forbidden City, shouting “Hang Grey” and
“Down with Imperialism”. They daubed his
walls with slogans and imprisoned him in an
8ft square “cell” on the ground floor.
What followed was a typical example of
Man’s inhumanity to Man, which Grey braved
stoically for the next two years – lesser mor-
tals might have cracked under the strain.
After his release – in October 1969 – he
was awarded the OBE for his services to
journalism, and made UK Journalist of the
Year. He later went on to become a radio
and television broadcaster and international
best-selling novelist.
The Hostage Handbook (The Tagman

branches in centres where the Harrods brand

Prince Harry has passed his Army pilot’s
course, St James’s Palace has announced.
It is believed that he is most likely to be
assigned to a Lynx helicopter, clearing the
way for a return to Afghanistan. The utility
helicopter is used generally for reconnais-
sance missions. The Lynx was flown by
Prince Andrew during the Falklands war.
A members-only Paramount Club at the
top of Centre Point, Tottenham Court Road,
has opened its doors to the public as the
capital’s highest dining room. It is on the 32nd
floor, and has 360-degree views stretching as
far as Windsor Castle. But it may not be the
tallest restaurant for long – the 34th-floor BT
Tower is expected to reopen next year.
The world’s first “peer to peer” car rental
service was launched in London last month.
Car owners will be able to make money out
of their vehicles when they are not using
them by renting them to vetted drivers who
live nearby. The online service is free to join
for drivers and owners and notifies owners
by text and e-mail when there is an approved
driver in their area who wants to use their car.
Owners will set the rental price of their car.
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
The Hackney Empire will reopen this
summer to take part in an East End festival
of international music organised by the
Barbican.
The Empire, which closed in January while
its new bosses tried to tackle huge debts,
will host a series of concerts in July during
the Barbican’s six week festival called Blaze.
They are the first part of a new programme
at the Empire, yet to be unveiled.
The theatre has begun the fight back
from financial ruin after selling its next door
offices for development in March. It was left
with debts from a £19.5m refurbishment six
years ago.
CHARLES’ CHARITY ‘FRAUD’
A former aide to Prince Charles has been
arrested on suspicion of fraud and money
laundering at Charles’s health charity.
He was taken into custody following a
police inquiry into £300,000 unaccounted
for in the books of the Foundation for Inte-
grated Health.
Prince Charles is president of the or-
ganisation, which campaigns for wider use
of complementary medicines by the National
Health Service and has received more than
£1m of taxpayers’ money.
The 49-year-old former executive was
arrested in north west London with a woman
aged 54. They were released on police bail
until June.
The charity’s auditors discovered the ac-
count irregularities. Prince Charles is being
kept informed.
HACKNEY’S ON THE MAP
Londoners are now able to cross the
river from Hackney to New Cross, with the
reopening of the revamped East London line
last month.
The railway operated a limited service
of eight trains per hour from 7am to 8pm
weekdays from Dalston Junction to New
Cross. A full service to West Croydon opened
on May 23.
Jo de Bank, from London Travelwatch,
said: “The East London line is great news
and will go into areas which are transport
poor. But there’s still more to be done in
south London, which still suffers from not
having as much transport as other parts of
the capital.”
Liberal-Democrat transport spokesman
Caroline Pidgeon said: “Phase two is wonder-
ful but ultimately the problem is that people
were promised it in addition to the South
London line, not instead of.”
The new East London line will operate a
fleet of 20 walk-through air-conditioned trains
from Dalston Junction in the north via the City
and Docklands to New Cross, Crystal Palace
and West Croydon in the south.
Four new stations have been opened at
Dalton Junction, Haggerston, Hoxton and
Shoreditch High Street, putting Hackney on
the Tube map for the first time. A further 14
stations have been refurbished.
Mayor Boris Johnson said: “This type of
investment is essential if London, throwing
off the shackles of recession, is to grow and
prosper.”

man wanted in the US for alleg-
edly hacking into American military
computers can stay in the UK for
now because the new home secretary
has agreed to grant more time to
consider the case.
The High Court adjourned the
case of Gary McKinnon’s extradi-
tion last month after Home Office
chief Theresa May approved a pause
in court proceedings.
McKinnon is accused by US
prosecutors of hacking into comput-
ers shortly after the September 11,
2001 attacks.
His legal team has fought his
extradition for years, saying he suf-
fers from a form of autism and that
extraditing him would be a breach
of his human rights.
Lawyer Karen Todner said she
hoped May will stop the extradi-
tion now that she has more time to
consider up-to-date evidence.

gling postal service, Royal
Mail, potentially setting
up a confrontation with
unions.
The coalition government said in a
document outlining its legislative pro-
gram that it plans to seek “an injection
of private capital” into the government-
run company.
It did not specify how much of the
group will be up for sale, but said it
would retain Post Office Ltd in public
ownership.
The previous Labour government
shelved its controversial plans to part-
privatise Royal Mail last year after

Safety Rules Over Volcanic Ash
AVIATION authorities introduced re-
laxed flight safety rules to minimize more
disruptions caused by a volcano eruption
in Iceland, as three of Europe’s busiest
airports reopened after a dense volcanic
ash cloud dissipated.
Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority said
last month it agreed with airlines, regula-
tors and engine manufacturers on new
rules that would let planes fly for a limited
time through higher ash densities than
currently allowed. The rules are subject
to airlines getting a guarantee from their
engine makers that their aircraft can safely
tolerate the ash.

said the problems at Royal Mail, includ-
ing a big hole in its pension pot, needed
to be addressed.
“It is a big issue that can’t just be left
in the long grass, it has got to be dealt
with,” he said.
Royal Mail reported that its operating
profit for the last financial year increased
by 26 percent to £404m, despite a series
of strikes and falling mail volumes as the
company cut costs and modernized its
business. However, revenue dipped for the
first time in a decade to £9.4bn. Around
8,000 jobs were cut in the last financial
year, all through voluntary measures.
The body said that so far British budget
carrier Flybe was the only airline that
satisfied those conditions, but it expected
other airlines to follow soon and European
authorities to introduce similar rules.
British air traffic control company
NATS said the new rules meant that re-
strictions on British airspace could now
be eased.
A number of British and European air-
ports faced short closures again last month
prior to the new rules.
Eurostar added four extra trains dur-
ing the disruption – an additional 3,500
seats – between London and Paris to help
travelers cope.
Eyjafjallajokul (pronounced ay-yah-

the first time in nearly two centuries. Dur-
ing its last eruption, starting in 1821, its

Chaos Commission Says

ing for urgent changes to electoral law after
hundreds of voters were turned away from
overcrowded polling stations during the
national election.
The commission’s chairman, Jenny
Watson, says the chaos during the vote
May 6 was unacceptable. She says a review
found that voters who arrived before polls
closed were unable to vote because of

New Leader In September
THE NEW main opposition Labour Party
says it will appoint its next leader on Sep-
tember 25, during its first annual confer-
ence since losing office in the country’s
national election.
The party – which held power for 13
years under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown
– said last month it will announce the result
of an election to select Brown’s successor
on that date.
The 44-year-old ex-foreign secretary,
David Miliband, and his 40-year-old
brother Ed Miliband, are the two major
contenders for the post to have so far
declared their intention to run.
Labour’s interim leader Harriet Harman
said she won’t stand to replace Brown.
Expected challenger Jon Cruddas, a leftist

What To Do When Coming
And Going…
WHEN entering the US, visitors and individu-
als with non-immigrant visas must fill out a
white I-94 or green I-94W Arrival-Departure
document and retain it during their stay. It
must be returned to Customs and Border
Patrol (CBP) at the time you depart the US. It
is important that the I-94 be returned to CBP
because it is a record of when you entered
and departed the US and verifies that you
entered legally and did not overstay the period
you were permitted to stay in the US. Being
able to prove that you obeyed immigration
laws is important when reentering the US in
the future or when applying for immigration
benefits such as a non-immigrant or im-
migrant visas.
Depending on the mode of transportation
taken to depart the US, the I-94 should be
turned in at the time of departure to the airline
or ship representative or to the Canadian or
Mexican immigration inspector at the land
border. If you leave the US without turning
in the I-94 to the appropriate authorities,
you must take further action to ensure that
your departure is properly recorded only if
you departed the US by land, private ship,
or private plane. You are not required to take
any actions if you took a commercial airline
or sea carrier because your departure can
be independently verified. Travelers who
take short trips to Canada, Mexico or the
Caribbean islands during their visit to the US
can hold on to their I-94s until they depart
for their home.
If you did not turn in your I-94 card at
the time of departure and did not take a
commercial airline or ship, the I-94 must be
mailed to the CBP office in Kentucky with
other documentation to prove that you left
the US and an explanation written in English.
Without taking these steps, CBP’s records
may indicate that you are overstaying your
authorized stay.
Supporting documents that can be submit-
ted as proof of your departure from the US
can include items such as original boarding
passes that you used to depart another

Man Convicted For Twitter Bomb ‘Threat’

A MAN who said on Twitter that he would
blow up an airport if his flight was delayed
by snow was convicted last month of
sending a threatening message and made
to pay £1,000.
Paul Chambers, 26, insisted his post on
the micro-blogging site was a joke. But
a judge at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court
in northern England found him guilty of
sending an offensive, indecent, obscene or
menacing message over a public telecom-
munications network.
Chambers was arrested in January after
he posted the message saying he would blow
up Robin Hood Airport near the large town
of Doncaster “sky high” if his flight, due to
leave in a week’s time, was delayed.
Rent-A-Bike When You’re Sightseeing In London
A NEW bicycle-hire scheme is to be
launched in London this summer.
Getting around London on surface
streets has never been easy, but a new
plan by Transport for London (TfL) is to
“flood” the capital with 6,000 bicycles to
be used in a bike-hire scheme.
The cycles will have three-speed gears
and dynamo-powered and a carrier basket.
The first have come off the production line
in Canada.
The bikes will hit London’s streets from
Chambers, from Doncaster, said he
made the post when the airport was closed
by snow and he feared his travel plans
would be disrupted.
“It did not cross my mind that Robin
Hood would ever look at Twitter or take
it seriously because it was innocuous hy-
perbole,” he said.
An airport passed the message on to
police. Chambers was arrested two days
before his flight was due employee came
across the tweet a few days later, but
security staff there decided it was not a
credible bomb threat.
Chambers, who lost his job at a car
distribution firm after his arrest, said he
was considering an appeal.

UK Bans Doctor Who Linked
Autism To Vaccine

BRITAIN’S top medical group ruled last
month that a doctor who claimed autism
was linked to a childhood vaccine can no
longer practice in the UK
The General Medical Council also
found Dr Andrew Wakefield guilty of
“serious professional misconduct” as it
struck him from the country’s medical reg-
ister. The council was investigating how
Wakefield and colleagues carried out their
research, not the science behind it.
When the research was published a
dozen years ago, British parents abandoned
the measles vaccine in droves, leading to
a resurgence of the disease. Vaccination
rates have never recovered and there are
outbreaks of measles in the UK every
year.
In 1998, Wakefield and colleagues
published a study alleging a link between
autism and the vaccine for measles, mumps
and rubella. Most of the study’s authors
renounced its conclusions and it was re-
tracted by the journal in February.
Many other studies have been con-
ducted since then and none have found a
connection between autism and the vac-
cines. Wakefield moved to the US several
years ago and the ruling does not affect
his right to practice medicine there or in
other countries.
In 2005, Wakefield founded a nonprofit
autism center in Austin, Texas, but quit
earlier this year.
In January, Britain’s medical council
ruled that Wakefield and two other doctors
acted unethically and showed a “callous
disregard” for the children in their study.
The medical body said Wakefield took
blood samples from children at his son’s
birthday party, paying them £5 each and
later joked about the incident.
In a statement then, Wakefield said the
medical council’s investigation was an
effort to “discredit and silence” him to
“shield the government from exposure on
the (measles) vaccine scandal.”
In the ruling, the medical council said
Wakefield abused his position as a doctor
and “brought the medical profession into
disrepute.”

Stones might be celebrating a number
one spot for their re-released Exile On
Main Street album, almost 20 years since
their last number one.
The reworked version of the 1972
release – one of their most acclaimed

veteran rock ‘n’ rollers from electronica
gods Faithless, whose album The Dance

reviews. It has since earned huge critical
praise and regularly polls highly among
lists of the greatest records of all time.
But the band have failed to top the al-

The re-issue comes as a documentary
about its making, Stones in Exile, re-
ceived its world premiere at the Cannes
Film Festival.

there’s Ian; so they arrest him. After several
days of intense questioning, they let him go,
pending further inquiries. . .
Also in the frame, Ronnie, Peggy, Phil,
Jack, Sam, Janine, basically everyone cur-
rently under contract to the BBC. (Truthfully, I
figured it was Tracy the barmaid – it’s always
the quiet ones!) But the one who the Old Bill
haven’t hauled in for questioning yet is feeling
the most guilty: Bradley. He had gone over to
the Vic to punch Archie on the night he was
killed (Stacy had just told him about the rape)
and even though Archie was still alive when
he left, Bradley fears that at any moment,
the police will come to get him. He wants to
leave the Square with Stacy. Jack wants him
to come clean to the old Bill, saying it will be
better for him in the long run – but does he
really just want to clear Ronnie?
Complicating things: The reading of Ar-
chie’s will. . . He leaves virtually everything
(money, real estate, millions of dollars – and
one The Queen Victoria Public House) to
Roxy. One would think that Roxy would hand
the Vic back over to Peggy, what with the fact
that Archie had stolen it from her just days
before he died (and the houses and millions
in cash should be enough for her anyway) but
funnily enough, no one even mentions this to
her! So Roxy takes over the Vic, goes power-
mad, wants to change everything, fires Tracy,
wants Peggy out from behind the bar, etc.
Oh, and who shows up right before the will
is read? Archie’s first wife (Roxy and Ron-
nie’s mum, whom they haven’t seen or heard
from in 20 years), claiming their divorce was
never finalized. When her scam is rumbled,

when he goes to give it to her, she’s gone and
done a runner. He spies her later through the
window of her flat, using his window clean-
ing ladder, and sees that she’s fainted again
so he kicks in the door and feeds her tinned
soup. And then he makes it his mission to
make Tina better with the help of sausage
butties fresh from Roy’s Rolls. What a guy!
With a face like Kirk’s, you can understand

Across the Square, Dot and Jim have a big
problem in a small package; Dot’s grandaugh-

seed? Aside from terrorizing the other children
in the Square, she has taken to trying to con-
vince Dot to put Jim in a nursing home. And
after one incident, when she pours a glass of
water on Jim’s lap to make it seem as if he’s
wet himself, then when caught screams that
it’s boring there and she hates them, Dot loses
her temper and gives Alfalfa a long-overdue
smack on the backside. Dot is immediately
apologetic, and so the manipulative little girl
uses that to get Dot to give in to her every de-
she rolls back when he apologises. And that’s
how we meet Izzy, she’s feisty and fun and
she works on the checkout at Frescho.
Tyrone drives off to the country with his
pregnant wife Molly in a faulty car. And in the
strange world of soap, that can mean only
one thing. Yes, the car skids and overturns
on a deserted country road and Mr and Mrs
Dobbs end up upside down in a smashed
up car. Molly’s rushed to hospital where she
and the baby are examined and fortunately
both will be fine, while Molly’s ex-lover Kevin
Webster hangs around the ward like an un-
washed bedpan that’s due in the sluice. Over
in the hair and beauty salon, Natasha eyes
up Nick Tilsley, giving him the hairdresser’s
one and only chat up line: “Ooh, you’ve got
lovely hair,” while Lewis demands to be
transported to cuticle nirvana with a manicure
from Audrey. Audrey’s fluffy head has been
turned by Lewis the escort who tells her she’s
the special one and he’s off the meter with
her from now on, she no longer has to pay
for his attention and time. I bet he says that
to all the old girls.

He tries to go walking but Mary takes his boot
laces; he tries to ring Rita but Mary’s cut the
phone; he reaches for his glasses but Mary
smashes them up. Norris makes a bid for
freedom but when he does run away, he trips
and falls and ends up with his leg bandaged
as Mary fusses over him and muses about
married life as Mrs Cole. Norris soon wishes
that he’d stayed at home.
And finally this month, as the Corrie local
paper, The Weatherfield Gazette shouts from
its headline: “Hopes Fade for Missing Kitten”,
we can only suspect the worst. Just look what
happened to Maxine’s pussy.

Reports Falklands
Oil Find
BRITISH OIL and gas explorer Rockhop-
per Exploration PLC says it may have
discovered viable oil off the coast of the
Falkland Islands.
Shares in Rockhopper soared after its
announcement last month that initial data
from its Sea Lion platform in the Falkland
basin “indicates that this well is an oil
discovery.”
The company says it will collect further
information before deciding whether to
drill an appraisal well.
Exploration of the waters around the
Falklands has been controversial amid a
long-running dispute between Britain and
Argentina over ownership of the islands.
Another British explorer, Desire Petro-
leum PLC, abandoned a well in the basin
in March after reporting that oil might be
present, but was of low quality.

‘Lost’ Booker
Prize
A TRAGICOMIC historical novel
about the relationship between
Britain and Ireland won literature’s
prestigious Booker Prize last month,
four decades after missing out be-
cause of a scheduling quirk.
JG Farrell’s Troubles was award-
ed the “lost” Booker Prize for works
published in 1970, a year when no
prize was handed out. Set in 1919,
the novel is about an English army
officer ensconced in a crumbling
Irish hotel, scarcely aware of the
war for independence breaking out
around him.
Farrell, who drowned while fish-
ing on the Irish coast in 1979, also
won the Booker in 1973 for The Siege
of Krishnapur. Those two novels –
along with a later book, The Singa-
pore Grip – form a trilogy exploring
the end of the British Empire.

Britain Gets A ConDem Coalition
THE BIGGEST shock of the 2010 General
Election came in the first minute after the polls
closed. The TV exit poll showed an increase
of about 90 seats for the Conservatives under
David Cameron, a parallel loss for Gordon
Brown’s Labour part and a small number of
Liberal Democrat losses.
It was entirely baffling. The surge in Lib
Dem support after Nick Clegg’s strong TV
showing (see May’s UJ) was confidently
expected to yield a massive increase in their
parliamentary representation.
The other thing the poll indicated was
predictable: that the Tories would be the
largest party in the new parliament but with
insufficient seats to form a government on its
own. The country had said to its politicians
go hang yourselves!
Had you gone to bed then you would have
had spared the endless poring over numbers
and percentages, the hair-splitting reactions
to the electorate’s decision, the evasive an-
swers that all politicians invariably give to any
question and so on. It would take ten hours
for all the results to be calculated.
ASTONISHMENT
In the morning, the astonishment at the
Lib Dems’ poor showing was still the big-
gest issue. For the last three weeks of the
campaign the country had been seized by the
phenomenon called Cleggmania. Whenever
and wherever you saw Clegg, he was talk-
ing to or wading through throngs of adoring
masses, all wetting themselves at being so
close to greatness.
So impressive had his entry into the
political arena been that there was a surge
of people, mainly young, to register for the
vote.
But where did his vote go on the big day?
In the event it was a non-event: he attracted
the same percentage of voters as had his pre-
decessor, Charles
Kennedy, in 2005. In
reality, he had fared
even worse, since
altogether he lost five
seats. It is a mystery
that remains to be
solved even now.
WINNER
What was also
perfectly clear next
morning was that
Cameron was the winner, just about. His
party had gained record numbers of seats,
their biggest gains since 1931 they kept tell-
ing us. This was a little disingenuous since
they had lost so many seats in the past 20
years but who could deny them their pleasure
at finally getting within reach of power after so
many years wandering the wilderness?
Immediately Cameron announced that he
would be seeking talks with the Lib Dems to
construct a coalition government that could
offer the country stability. No less rapidly,
Clegg, shrugging off the disappointment of
his losses, hastened to the negotiating table
to grab his share of power.
Meanwhile, Brown stuck around in Down-
ing Street. He had no choice. It fell to him
as Prime Minister to go to the Queen and
recommend his successor. While the talks
between the Tories and the Lib Dems went
on, he remained unable to discharge this
last duty.
TWIST
Four days after the election, the political
kaleidoscope turned another twist when it
was revealed that the Lib Dems were pre-
pared to see if they could form a progressive
alliance with Labour, indeed they had been
talking with Labour behind the scenes all
the time.

Brown announced that he was prepared
to stand down as Labour leader, clearing the
way for Clegg (who does not like Brown) to
strike up a partnership with a new Labour
leader. It was construed as a face-saving
manoeuvre for Clegg but senior Labour fig-
ures came out against any deal and, by the
end of Tuesday, May 11, Clegg and Cameron
had shaken hands on a working arrangement
that would give Clegg the job of Deputy Prime
Minister and five seats in a Tory cabinet.
As Gordon Brown made his final bow, he
was given a deserved standing ovation. He
has been a statesman of immense stature,
awkward, shy almost, but principled and
human. One of the old school.
SIGNIFICANCE
What will happen now? Has the Lib
Dems’ accession to power any long-term
significance?
There is little doubt that Cameron and
Clegg now enjoy the warmest of rela-
tionships. They hail from similar wealthy
privileged backgrounds – public school boys,
Oxbridge graduates both. In a trice they have
gone from being bitter enemies to the closest
of chums but what of their parties?
The bigger losers appear to be the Lib
Dems who have long been seen as a conve-
nient repository for the protest vote. Now they
can no longer claim that happy status. Indeed,
one wonders what will happen in forthcom-
ing elections as Lib Dems and Tories square
up. Since the national parties are in a formal
alliance can individual candidates claim to
offer distinctly different policies?
I am writing too early in May to report the
outcome of the Thirsk by-election where the
Tories are defending a stronghold but you will
know the outcome in June – and see voters’
early response to the coalition government.
Now the Labour party has to find a new
leader. They are well placed with an abun-
dance of attractive young men and women
with experience of government. Which of
them will float to the top? The brothers Da-
vid and Ed Miliband? Or Brown’s favourite,
Ed Balls? His wife, Yvette Cooper, or Andy
Burnham?
What you can say is that the Tory/Lib Dem
alliance will have five years now they have
agreed to legislate for fixed election dates.
By May 2015 they should also have a new
electoral system enabling them to position
themselves to retain power for at least a
couple of parliaments. Labour relief at not

EXHIBITION space for this year’s
Farnborough International Airshow has
sold out, but organizers acknowledged
last month that they are unlikely to see
a repeat of 2008’s bumper orders for
commercial aircraft.
In an update on preparations for the
world’s biggest air show, July 19-25,
organizers also confirmed the event, held
every other year, will debut long-awaited
aircraft from arch rivals Boeing Co. and
Airbus – the US company’s 787 passen-

the face of politics here in Britain. Perhaps
for all time.

in Florida. If it wasn’t in Sara-
sota I’d be imbibing there now. The owners,
wonderfully warm Mancunians who sound
so cheery in our phone calls, have already
invited me over. They wisely chose a classy
name not already used in Florida, The King
George. (My favourite silly pub name is the
Queen’s Legs and Artichoke which really ex-
ists in London). Say owner-operators Mike
Rafferty and Nick Barthram,” It’s an English
style bar and restaurant in the Gulf Gate area
with tasty pub food, quality beers, live sports
on huge screens, dart boards, great music,
and extra-friendly service.”
Nick’s wife Christie completes the trio,
whose wide range of experience includes
years of owning, managing, serving, bar-
tending, and patronizing pubs in England,
Chicago, NY and Los Angeles, all with
excellent bar reviews. Mike just relocated to

YOU ARE what you drive, well it used to be
that way to a certain degree in the 50s and
early 60s. A motor car’s price represented
a considerable percentage of ones income
back in these decades thus a persons social
status could be reasonably determined by
the motor car they owned. Back in those
times the motor car owner population was
constantly on the rise which created fierce
competition between car manufacturers to
get the most sales.
The population segment that saw car
ownership rising the most was the middle-
class. Most manufacturers were eager for
this market share but two in particular dueled
it out for 14 years, each with their own ver-
sion of a middle-class market model, these
manufacturers were Rover and the Leyland
Motor Corporation. Their car models were the
Rover 2000 and the Triumph 2000.
The market they chased, doctors, engi-
neers, solicitors, etc had other options from
other car makers of course, but in 1963 when
both their cars were launched within one
week of each other, these vehicles were the
most modern designs and at the very middle
of the car range.
A Jag for instance was seen as a little
above middle class standard and so had a
price to reflect, a Vauxhall was considered a
little low of the standard and, so, too had a
price to suit. Both the Rover and the Triumph
2000 cars had evolved over their 14-year
reigns, and their competitiveness similarly
evolved and it never waned, even though the
last 10 of the 14 years both cars were made
by the same manufacturer.
In 1967 the Leyland Motor Corporation
absorbed Rover and then became British
Leyland. One of the many factors of BL’s
demise is that the company had grown too
large with too many car models competing
for sales within the company. To stem this
internal competition between marques BL
dropped some models and badge engineered
other models which helped the company
to trim costs. BL, however, then left Rover
and Triumph alone to compete against each
other for what was considered to be the most
lucrative segment of the car market – the
middle class segment. For the four years
prior to the Rover/BL merger, sales figure for
the Rover 2000 and the Triumph 2000 were
almost identical, so dropping one of these
cars in favor of the other would have proved
disastrous – with this in mind the marketing
divisions of both Rover and Triumph were
instructed to continue as they had before the
company merger.
The 2000 was the engine displacement
(2000cc) of both these cars with the Rover
having a straight four-cylinder overhead cam
engine verses the Tri-
umph’s straight-six en-
gine. Brake horsepower
was a little higher on the
Rover as was the top
speed, but accelera-
tion was better on the
six-cylinder Triumph.
Fuel supply was by twin
Stromberg carburetors
on the Triumph as opposed to a single SU
carburetor on the Rover (in 1966 a twin-carb
TC model was offered.) The exterior dimen-
sions, length, width, height and wheelbase
were virtually identical on both cars as was
the weight and interior. Room and boot
space, however, was better on the Triumph.
Pricewise they were about the same, mainly
because they had to be to be competitive.
The styling, well this is where any similar-
ity ended, the Rover having a more English,
sophisticated look than the Italian styled Tri-
umph. The question of the day was: “Which
was the better looking, Spen King’s styled
Rover 2000 or Michelotti’s Triumph 2000?”
Well, according to the consumer they were
equally well-styled, as the sales figures show.
After 14 years of production 322,302 Rovers
were made against 324,920 Triumphs.
So, who bought what? It was the middle
class as I wrote earlier, doctors, lawyers and
the like, at least this was the type that bought
them new, but there was a difference on what
type of middle class person would opt for a
Rover as opposed to the Triumph. Just by the
way a person dressed or what kind of music
they preferred one could almost guarantee
who would choose one car over the other.
Sales figures fluctuated in favor of the Rover
when they introduced the 2000 TC model as
these performance orientated middle class
drivers found it difficult to justify buying a
slower car no matter what lifestyles they
led. Triumph needed to respond to catch up
in performance and the subsequent market
share.
The Triumphs always had twin carburetors
so no improvement could be made there.
Petrol Injection was the answer, together
with boosting the engine displacement to
2498cc by increasing crankshaft throw and
piston stroke, the result was the Triumph
2500PI and the resulting sales figures made
this car top dog for a while but then the Rover
was available with a 3500cc small block V8
engine, this evened up the odds. Ironically,
Spen King the principle architect of the Rover
2000 was now technical director at Triumph
so he was competing against his own baby.
And so it went on until 1977 with each model

being tweaked, tuned and improved upon
throughout until it was time to put these
wonderful motor cars to rest. They had en-
joyed probably the most fiercely contended
battle for supremacy as the motor industry
had ever seen and both had emerged equal
winners. It was Rover, though, who would
succeed in the future, as the successor to
both of these cars was the Rover SD1. The
Triumph marque lasted a few more years but
eventually succumbed to British Leyland’s
disastrous decisions.
As for my preference, well I was too young
to drive when these cars came out and later
when I could drive I couldn’t afford either one
of them but I know what would have been my
choice, it would have been the Trium..er..er..
Rov..em..em, the fastest one.

Wounded British
Servicemen Visit SC Coast
SOUTH CAROLINA provided a
restful stop for 42 British servicemen
who had been wounded in Iraq and
Afghanistan last month.
The Post and Courier reports the
servicemen arrived at the Charleston
City Marina May 19 on three boats.
The servicemen from the British
army, air force and navy and some
Nepalese Gurkhas are on an around-
the-world expedition to help them
heal physically and psychologically.
12 of those crewing the 67-foot
vessels were amputees.
The Gurkhas left Charleston for
Britain while the rest of the expedi-
tion sailed on to Boston.

Actress Lynn Redgrave Dies At Age 67
LYNN REDGRAVE, an intro-
spective and independent player
in her family’s acting dynasty
who became a 1960s sensation as
the unconventional title character
of Georgy Girl and later drama-
tized her troubled past in such
one-woman stage performances
as Shakespeare for My Father
and Nightingale, has died. She
was 67.
Her publicist Rick Miramon-
tez, speaking on behalf of her children,
said Redgrave died peacefully at her home
in Kent, Connecticut. Children Ben, Pema
and Annabel were with her, as were close
friends.
“Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel
passed away peacefully after a seven year
journey with breast cancer,” Redgrave’s
children said in a statement. “She lived,
loved and worked harder than ever be-
fore. The endless memories she created
as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor
and friend will sustain us for the rest of
our lives.”
Redgrave was diagnosed with breast
cancer in December 2002, had a mas-
tectomy in January 2003 and underwent
chemotherapy.
Her death came a year after her niece

ries sustained in a skiing accident and just
a month after the death of her older brother,
Inventor Of Cash Machine Dies At 84 In Scotland
JOHN SHEPHERD-BARRON, the Scots-
man credited with inventing the world’s
first automatic cash machine, has died after
a short illness. He was 84.
Shepherd-Barron died peacefully in
northern Scotland’s Raigmore Hospital
last month.
Shepherd-Barron once said that he came
up with the idea of the cash dispensers after
being locked out of his bank. He also said
that his invention was inspired by choco-

suffered from bulimia and served as a
spokeswoman for Weight Watchers. With
daughter Annabel Clark, she released a
2004 book about her fight with cancer,
Journal: A Mother and Daughter’s Re-
covery From Breast Cancer.
“She was adored by audiences, and
although she embarked on a medical
treatment as previews began, she never
missed a show and gave magnificent per-
formances eight times a week,” said Lynne
Meadow, artistic director of Manhattan
Theatre Club.

Tiger Woods did not survive the cut at

As another rugby union season ended, the
honours were as follows.
Toulouse are the European club champions
after beating French rivals Biarritz 21-19 in
the final of the Heineken Cup. Cardiff Blues
became the first Welsh club to win a Euro-
pean trophy, when they beat Toulon 28-21
at Marseille, in the final of the Amlin European
Challenge Cup. Leicester are the Guinness
Premiership champions with Northampton
and the Saracens tucked close behind. Esher
are the English league National Division One
Champions, Macclesfield won Division 2
North and Barking, Division 2, South. Neath
are the Welsh Premier League Champions, with
Swansea and Newport not far behind. UWIC
were top of Division One East, and Tonmawr,
finished top of Division One West. The Scottish
champions are Currie, with Ayr as runners-up.
Stirling County won Division 2, and Hillhead/
Jordanhill topped Division 3. Leinster were the

Fulham played a competitive game at

FABIO CAPELLO has committed to coach
England until the 2012 European Cham-
pionship by asking for his contract to be
rewritten so his position isn’t reviewed after
the World Cup.
Capello, who took charge of England in
2008, was due to meet Football Association
officials after the World Cup to determine
whether he would stay in charge.
But Capello’s lawyers are removing that
clause after the Italian pledged his future to
the FA last month. It offers England confi-
dence the 63-year-old won’t walk away from
the job after being linked with managerial
positions throughout Europe.
“I have a contract with the FA and it will
finish when they decide to sack me,” Capello
said. “I love this club and love this country
but I don’t think about my future. My future
