Assignment 1
Basic Properties of Fluids
Fluid Statics
1) A Newtonian fluid having a specific gravity of 0.92 and kinematic viscocity of 4
x 10-4 m2/s flows past a fixed surface. The velocity profile near the surface is as
shown in the Figure Q1 below. Determine the magnitude and direction of the
shearing stress developed on the plate. Express your answer in terms of U and ,
with U and expressed in units of meters per second and meters, respectively.

2) Derive an expression for the change in height h in a circular tube of a liquid with
surface tension and contact angle , as in Figure Q2. Suppose that radius, R =
1 mm, find the capillary rise of water-air-glass interface if = 0, = 0.073 N/m
and = 1000 kg/m3.

3) Determine the elevation diference, h, between the water levels in the two open
tanks shown in Figure 3.

4) The rectangular gate CD of Figure 4 is 1.8 m wide and 2.0 m long. Assuming the
material of the gate to be homogeneous and neglecting friction at the hinge C,
determine the weight of the gate necessary to keep it shut until the water level
rises to 2.0 m above the hinge.

5) Assume that the concrete dam shown in Figure 5 weighs 23.6 kN/m 3 and rests on
a solid foundation. Determine the minimum coefficient of friction between the
dam and the foundation required to keep the dam from sliding at the water depth
shown. You do not need to consider uplift along the base. Base your analysis on a
unit length of the dam.

6) The 5.5 m long gate of the Figure Q6 below is a quarter circle and is hinged at H.
Determine the force, P, required to hold the gate in place. Neglect friction at the
hinge and the weight of the gate.
