Mrs Kick-a lot-Shoes

Lesson Plan
AusVels

Recognising the most common sound made by each letter of the alphabet,
including consonants and short vowel sounds

Talking about the meanings in texts read

Read predictable texts, practising phrasing and fluency, and monitor

meaning using concepts about print and emerging contextual, semantic,
grammatical and phonic knowledge

Attempting to work out unknown words by combining contextual,

semantic, grammatical and phonic knowledge

Learning Focus: To familiarise children with the oo sound and how it is used in
both verbal and written context as well as creating their own character
interpretation.
Resources: Mrs Kick-a lot-Shoes big book, whiteboard, whiteboard marker,
worksheets
Time: 1 hour

Beginning
Prepare resources before lesson
Whole group lesson
1. Children to sit on carpet
2. Re-enforce positive behaviour through praise (5Ls, use Star of the Week
as helper)
3. Children to move in closer or move away from other children if talking or
distracted
Middle (30minutes)
1. Put on the I.C.T resource for children (The read along CD)
2. Play the read along CD on the whiteboard, children to sit on carpet and
watch
3. Explain that we are listening to the book to see that there are many
different ways that a book can be read other than the way in which the
teachers read as well as the fact that there are many different formats in
which we can read, not just through books.

4. Once children have listened to the book, then turn to face the smaller
whiteboard and discuss what they thought and how they felt about the
book.
5. Explain that they are to go back to their desks to complete the Kick-a lotshoes activity.
6. Model the activity by cutting out the witch shape and sticking it on the
board, ask a child to come and draw her shoes. This is the activity they will
be completing individually in their scrapbooks.
7. Continue explaining that once they have finished this activity they are
then to write as many oo words around the witch in their scrapbook as
they can think of
8. Then begin to discuss the oo sound in the book and what words they
know that begin with oo.
9. Write these on the board as well as getting the children to write on the
board
10.Once you feel that students understand the activity get one person from
each desk to collect materials and collect the scrapbook tubs.
11.Then dismiss all children to work on the task
12.Stay on the carpet with children who require additional help as well as
listening out for children who need help at their desk. Monitor working
noise in room.
End (20minutes)
5 minute warning

Children to pack up resources and move back to the carpet ready for
snack time

Questions to consider
How to I cater to early finishers? How do I make it harder for stronger students?
How to make it accessible for developing students?
How to make the lesson engaging throughout? Consider questions to ask

Reflection on Teaching

I felt that this lesson went better than the previous Big Book lesson (Mrs
Wishy Washy) however there were still some areas for improvement

For example many of the children finished the activity quite early whereas
some were barely finished. Its quite challenging to cater for such a wide
range in learning ability and I definitely feel that it would take me a lot
more practice to learn how to best cater for this divide. I really want to be

able to challenge the more advanced children as well as help the children
who might need more assistance.

I find it difficult to explain the difference between oo sounds and ou

sounds, and many others sounds such as this, I would like to develop
more strategies to better be able to understand how to best explain this
concept to the children

Next time I would like to have a further extension activity and better incorporate
the ICT in the lesson
