Foreword
This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS SC 21A, Fire safety Fire
fighting equipment, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance
with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement.
This document was published in May 2010.
This document supersedes SANS 1128-1:2008 (edition 2).
A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment
No. 1.
SANS 1128 consists of the following parts under the general title Firefighting equipment:
Part 1: Components of underground and above-ground hydrant systems.
Part 2: Hose couplings, connectors and branch pipe and nozzle connections.
Annex A forms an integral part of this document. Annex B is for information only.

Introduction
This part of SANS 1128 allows only a 65 mm instantaneous connection as the standard final stage
connection on any hydrant installation. This standardization is necessary to ensure that, in cases of
emergency, firefighting equipment from different suppliers, or from local authorities or municipalities
that have components of differing types, can be used in the affected area.
Although a variety of intermediate connections is allowed, the final outlet should still be in the form
of a 65 mm instantaneous connection. However, where a local authority does not incorporate a
65 mm instantaneous connection as the final stage connection, it is suggested that the authority
should acquire and keep in proper working condition the necessary adapters to convert a sufficient
number of its hydrants to the standard final outlet in an emergency.

When tested in accordance with 8.2 at an inlet pressure of 150 kPa, a hydrant valve shall deliver at
least 1 200 L of water per minute.

7.2 Resistance to hydraulic pressure

When a component is tested in accordance with 8.3 at a water pressure of 2 000 kPa,

b) in the case of a valve,
1) there shall be no sticking, jamming, or binding of the spindle, and
2) the seat shall not leak or weep.

8 Inspection and methods of test

8.1 Inspection

clauses 6 and 7 for which tests to assess compliance are not given in 8.2 to 8.4 (inclusive).

8.2 Capacity test for valves

Connect the inlet of the valve to a suitable water supply and, with the valve in the open position,
increase the inlet water pressure to 150 kPa. Measure the rate of delivery and check for compliance
with 7.1.

8.3 Pressure test for components

8.3.1 Connect the inlet of the valve to a suitable water supply.
8.3.2 In the case of valves, with the gate or clack (as relevant) in the open position, fill the
component with water, ensuring that all air is expelled.

8.3.3 Blank off the outlet, apply a hydraulic pressure of 2 000 kPa, and maintain this pressure for
5 min.

8.3.4 While under pressure, check the body for compliance with 7.2(a).

8.3.5

Without reducing the pressure, close and open the valve and check the spindle for
compliance with 7.2 (b)(1).

8.3.6 Completely close the valve by hand and, without reducing the pressure, remove the blank
from the outlet and check the seat for compliance with 7.2 (b)(2).

8.4 Burst test for above ground-hydrant valves

8.4.1 Apparatus

8.4.2 Procedure
8.4.2.1 Assemble the male component to the outlet of the valve under test and connect the inlet to
the pump.
8.4.2.2 Fill the valve with water, ensuring that no air is occluded.
8.4.2.3 Open the valve and increase the water pressure to 5 000 kPa, and maintain this pressure
for 5 min.

Annex B
(informative)

Quality verification of firefighting equipment

When a purchaser requires ongoing verification of the quality of firefighting equipment, it is suggested
that instead of concentrating solely on evaluation of the final product, he also direct his attention to the
manufacturers quality system. In this connection, it should be noted that SANS 9001 covers the
provisions of an integrated quality system.
