My mentor is Ms. Christie Delaune. Ms. Christie attended the University of New Orleans. Ms.
Christie worked for 5 years doing head, neck and lung immunology research at LSU. She then
went to nursing school at Pittsburg. She went anesthesia school in California in 2011. Ms.
Christie has worked with Clear Lake for 4.5 years since 2012.

Clear Lake Regional Medical

Center
Clear Lake Regional Medical Center is a level 2 and 3 trauma hospital. Clear Lake has been a
hospital for 40 years.

What is Independent Study

Mentorship?
ISM is a class where students can pick what they want to study for a
semester.

ISM can be for Health Science or Multidisciplinary courses

Students are required to meet with their mentor at their place of
work, for 15 hours per semester, and document what they learn,
observe, and see
By the end of the semester students will give a final presentation
about what theyve learned throughout the entire semester
ISM is a very good class to expose students to various jobs, so they
have a better understanding of many jobs, and are exposed to many
more, to help them in the near future.

Medication Awareness

Medication awareness is finding out what the patients allergies

are, reviewing their medical history and even informing them of the
risks of their surgery.
I chose medication awareness because prepping for a surgery is
one of the most important things, it can prevent complication during
and after the operation.
Medication awareness is also important in the beginning of a
surgery around the time when a patient is put to sleep using
anesthesia and many other medicines that assist with pain and
more, which have to be calculated using their age and weight.

Pre Op

Preoperative care is the preparation and management of a patient

prior to surgery
Pre op prepares the patient physically and mentally for the
operation.
The physician doing the surgery must tell the patient about the risks
and possible complications and side effects from the surgery
A written consent must be filled and signed by the patient

Understanding Anesthesia

3 types of anesthesia general, local and regional

Type of anesthesia in a surgery is determined by the estimated
length of the surgery and patient medical history
Heart rate, blood pressure and many important things are
monitored throughout the surgery

Pre Anesthesia

After securing patient on operating bed, place the Non-Invasive

Blood Pressure (NIBP) on the patient, then insert the IV.
After sedation, give patient (4) main medicines, then Bag Mask
Ventilator (BMV) then the paralytic.
Top 4 medication for Pre Anesthesia are Fentanyl, Lidocaine,
Propofol and Rocuronium

Intubation

Endotracheal Intubation is when a tube is inserted into the mouth

for surgery.
The tube is inserted with a laryngoscope and the laryngoscope
holds the tongue aside and out of the way
Endotracheal tubes can be connected to ventilator machines to
provide artificial respiration

I really want to thank my mentor, Ms. Christie Delaune, because she
accepted me to be her mentee, and she has made so many sacrifices
just so I can get a feel of what her job is like and so I can accomplish
my goals in ISM.
I would love to that all my Health Science teachers, such as Ms. Hart
and Ms. Click for encouraging me to keep going in my studies and
helping me with my studies in the Health Profession. I am also
grateful because I was selected to be in ISM, even with the
competition among my peers.
I especially would love to thank my mom, my mother exposed me to
the medical world and I fell in love with it through her. My mother
pushes me like never before because she sees the potential in me
that others may not see. My mother is the reason I met Ms. Christie,
and I know I wouldnt have been as successful as I am now with her.
