coverband.PetrucciattendedBerkleeCollegeofMusicinBostonwithchildhoodfriendJohnMyung(bass),
wheretheymetfuturebandmateMikePortnoy(drums).WhileinBerkleetheyoftencoveredtwooftheirbiggest
influences,IronMaidenandRush.Thesethree,inadditiontoKevinMoore,formedthebandMajesty.Because
therewasalreadyanotherbandwiththesamename,thegrouplaterbecameDreamTheater.
WhilePetrucciismostcommonlyassociatedwithDreamTheater,heisalsointheprojectbandLiquidTension
Experiment,andhasappearedasaguestonrecordsbyotherartists,suchastheAgeofImpactalbumbythe
Explorer'sClub.
Petruccihasreleasedaguitarinstructionalvideo,RockDiscipline,whichcoverswarmupexercises,exercisesto
avoidinjurywhileplaying,alternatepicking,sweeppicking,chordsandothertechniquesfordevelopingone's
guitarplaying.Petruccialsohasabooknamed"GuitarWorldpresentsJohnPetrucci'sWildStringdom",which
wascompiledfromcolumnshewroteforGuitarWorldmagazineunderthattitle.
In2001,JoeSatrianiandSteveVaiinvitedPetruccitotourwiththemonthepopularG3guitartour,whichexposed
himtoamassivenumberofnewfansandinspiredasoloalbum.Thealbum,SuspendedAnimation,wasreleased
onMarch1,2005,andwasavailablefororderfromhiswebsite.Petruccialsoappearedonthe2005and2006G3
tours,andin2007,wentonG3touragain,thistimewithPaulGilbertandJoeSatriani.InarecentvideowithLarry
DiMarzio,Petrucciannouncedthatheisworkingonafollowuptohis2004album,SuspendedAnimationanda

PetruccialsowroteandrecordedtwoinstrumentalsoundtracksongsforaSegaSaturngametitledDigitalPinball:
Necronomicon.Eachtrackisroughlytwominuteslong,andarenamedsimplyPrologueandEpilogue.Inaspoof
rockband,NightmareCinema(whichwastheDreamTheatermemberschanginginstrumentsforagig),heused
the"alternatestagename"JohnnyJames.
In2012,PetrucciwasinvitedonceagaintojoinJoeSatrianiinhisG3tourwithSteveMorse.HisDreamTheater
drummerMikeMangini,andhisformerG3bassplayerDaveLaRueaccompaniedhimonthetour.
DreamTheaterbandmateJordanRudessrevealedinaninterviewthatPetrucciisapracticingCatholic.[7]He
currentlylivesinSt.James,NewYork,withhiswifeRenaSands,aguitaristintheallfemaleheavymetalband
Meanstreak,andtheyhavethreechildrentwinsSamanthaandRenato,andKiara.HeistheuncleofJakeBowen,
aguitaristintheprogressivemetalbandPeriphery.Heisalsoanavidfanofbodybuildinganddedicatesmuchof
hisofftimetoweighttraining.HeisavotingmemberofNARAS.[8]

alternatepickingwhich,ashehimselfclaims,requiresa"strongsenseofsynchronizationbetweenthetwo
[playing]hands."Johnisnotableforfrequentuseofthesevenstringelectricguitar,whichhesaysheusesasa
writingtool,takingadvantageoftheextendedrangeforheavierriffingandtoplayextendedrangerunsaspartofa
