    Dream Theater began searching for a new drummer in 2010 after Mike Portnoy announced he was leaving the band. They auditioned several drummers before selecting Mike Mangini. The band then entered the studio in early 2011 to begin writing and recording their new album without Mangini, instead programming drum parts for him to learn. Mangini added his own style to the parts. The album was mostly written in the studio collaboratively without Portnoy.

    relationshipsinotherprojects,burnout,andhisdesireforabreakasreasons.[1]Elaboratingonthesituationfor
    MusicRadar,JohnPetruccirevealedthatoriginally,Portnoydidnotwanttoleavethebandheonlywantedtotake
    afiveyearbreak.OnlyaftertherestofthebandrejectedhisproposaldidPortnoydecidetoquit.[2]
    PetruccihascalledPortnoy'sdepartureoneofthehardestthingsDreamTheaterhavehadtoface,andspeakingof

    AlittlemorethanamonthafterPortnoy'sdeparture,DreamTheaterbegan
    auditioningforanewdrummerinNewYorkCity.Thedrummersinvitedto
    auditionwereMikeMangini,DerekRoddy,ThomasLang,VirgilDonati,
    MarcoMinnemann,AquilesPriester,andPeterWildoer.[3]InApril2011,
    thebandannouncedthatManginiwasthedrummerselectedviaathreepart
    YouTubedocumentaryseriescalledTheSpiritCarriesOn.[4]
    ShortlyafterManginijoinedDreamTheater,Portnoyemailedtheband
    askingtorejoin,buthisattemptwasrebuffed.[5]Reflectingonhisarrivalto
    theband,ManginitoldNoisecreep,"AsIseeit,asIlookback,Ireally
    thinkwhathappenedwasthatthisbandkindofstartedover.Theywereina
    newplaceastheylookedforadrummer,andIwhengotthenews,afterthe
    shockworeoff,IknewwhatIwantedtodowhichwasjustbasically

    drummerfollowingarigorous
    auditionprocess.

    Writingandrecording
    OnJanuary3,2011,DreamTheaterenteredCoveCitySoundStudiostobeginworkingonanewalbum.[7]
    AlthoughJohnPetruccibroughtindemos,riffs,andsongsfromhome,thealbumwasmostlywritteninthe
    studio.[8]WritingwascompletedonMarch2anddonewithoutMikeMangini.Thebandmadedemosforallthe
    songswithdrumsalreadyprogrammed,thensentthemtoManginiwholearnedthepartsand"addedhisown
    stuff."[2][9]ReflectingonthewritingprocessforRockYourLife,JordanRudessexplainedthattheband'sapproach
    wasmoreopentohiskeyboardsthaninthepast,andthatafterMikePortnoy'sdeparture,heandPetrucci"became,
    like,free."[10]JamesLaBrieandJohnMyungeachcontributedmoretothewritingthantheyhadinrecentyears.[11]
    OnApril14,LaBriebegantrackingvocalsandthealbum'smixingandmasteringbyAndyWallacewerefinished
    byJune28.[12][13][14]LaBrierecordedallthealbum'svocalsinCanadawithRichardChycki.Originally,LaBrie
    plannedtoonlyrecordthealbum'sfirsttwosongsawayfromNewYorkCity,butafterflyingtheretofinishthe
    remainderofthevocals,decidedtogobacktoCanadabecause"itjustdidn'tfeelright."[11]
