The capital, South Tarawa, consists of a numberof islets connacted through a series of caussways, located in the Tarawa archipelago. Kiribati became independent from the United Kingdom in 1979. NOVEMBER 2016 THE MooNUGHTER: 6 Annie's Corner CONCERNING GENETICS e By Anne O. Stout Ly Has anyone seen the ads which start by showing what appears io be older photos... generations of a familly? The photos are supposed to be focusing on the notable genetic trait of a double chin, | didn't notioe the double chins. As one interested n genetics and genealogy, | was impressed by the collection of photos. Worrying about traits like a double chin seems insignificant to me. Coneems over more serious heallh issues being passed on such as heart canditions, skin conditions, Parkinson's Disease, Dementia, etc. are important. Knowing your family's neaith hestory i good, but be proud of genetic rats The ad indicates that to take away the double chin you need injections, Bul what's not lear is..Where does it go? How does it work? But the ad did make me start thinking about family traits and genetics in my family | have a niend who has two webbed toes on each fool. Keeps her from wearing toe socks, but otherwise a genetic trait that doesn't hurt anything, My hair color and aye color are all family alts; should | try to change all of them, and why? Traits nassed on by previaus generations can be very interesting. It's interesting how some genetic traits surface a couple of generations later, Recessive traits explains somewhat how two neown-eyed parents have a blue-eyed child Genetics make me think of a deck of cards; you shuffle and stari handing them out, not knowing who wil get what. Noticing 3 trait passed on is cod! too, ike giggling when nervous, stuttering, or other personal traits. Sometimes characteristics show up later in life, like my mother’s tendency to get headaches from others perfumes or aftershave. | now hawe this trait. I's interesting watching my own children, now adults developing their own traits 2s well as those af past family members. When you come trom a large family ke mine, the shuffling gets even more interesting, like your child looking very much Eke: your cousin's child. This is due to the same genetics being shuffled and the owners get similar hands. When | Ieamed my children were going to have RH factor I gat nervous until leamed more about it; the family also learved more about their own health. Like two parents who are positive wil have children that are positive, but since | am negative that meant one of my parents had fo be negative, even though my mother thought she and Dad were both positive. We leamed my father was negative and out of three brothers, one of them s negative. NOVEMBER 2016 to Call for pickup 642-3658 ‘THe MooNuGHTER Having an RH factor baby is not a big deal today, but was in my mather's day, so she was concamed about me and the child at first. Yet just last month, our eyes were on Hurricane Matthew as it rolled up the lower east coast ina flurry of gusty winds and heavy rain. We watched on TV as the sea reared up in angry waves, and reporters, danned in sturdy rain gear spoke into microphones of eminent dangers, area evacuations, and important safety measures to be taken. The weather channel became the dominant channel in millions af homes, and the colors of the hurricane path-a kind of moving art work, studied and reviewed endlessly. And then, the hurricane was gone. Matthew went out to sea and no one watched where he spent his last breath, The mess made by all that huffing and puffing became an ald story, mostly forgotten, definitely deleted as news worthy. That is honestly reasonable, for there is an insatiable desire for fresh news. But here is the part that many who were in the path of viable destruction will bring into this month to their upcoming Thanksgiving table. There will be countless stories told of persons propelled to action in time of need, of helping hands reaching aut to bring safety and restoration to friends and strangers alike—- stories alive with descriptive adjectives, of wide-eyed wonders of narrow escapes, of hidden fears revealed, and odd segments where laughter and tears combined together—an unrehearsed time where love in all its messy glory showed up, and arising from it, deep gratitude. His home was probably a very simple, country cottage, and He was taught to work hard and help Joseph in the carpenter shop. Most Jewish boys of that time went to school at the village house of worship, called a “synagogue.” Here they were taught from the Law of Moses and the books of the prophets. Since each book had to be copied by hand in those days, the students had none of their own and they had to learn their lessons by heart. Jesus also went to the synagogue with His family on the Sabbath each week for worship. Again, the Old Testament was read and explained, so it is easy to understand how many Jewish boys knew much of the Old Testament by memory, ‘The biggest occasion of the year was the time of the Passover, when Jews from everywhere went to Jerusalem ta celebrate the sacred feast and remember the time when God brought their peaple out of slavery in the land of Egypt. When Jesus was twelve years old, His parents let Him make the trip to Jerusalem with them for the first time. Together with others from Nazareth, they made the sixty-mile trip in several days, some walking and some riding donkeys in a large caravan, Along the way, others going ta worship joined the group, Finally, they saw Jerusalem spread out before them, What an impression the great city and the splendi Temple on Mount Moriah made on the young boy! Already Jesus’ heart was full of love for God, His Father, and the desire to do His work. Seeing the house of worship and the priests and observing the solemn feast of the Passover made His desire more intense. He lingered around the Temple, held by His attraction for God's house. This is true on the surface, but this Bitle berg was ° very instrumental in developing Thoga County and the surrounding area. One of the amazing things about this litte settlement is the number of churches serving the believers of a highar power. There are four churches within a one-mile stretch. One-of them was the Catholic Church, which, a short time ago, closed its doors — not due to mambership, but for the Lack of a priest. As more and more members of the Catholic faith sattied near Candar, and with no mode of transportation available axcept horse drawn rigs, @ trip to these services was.a slow and tedious: venture. In and around 1870, tha Kehoe family, living at 23 Church Street in Candor, invited the priest in Owego use of their home as a place to celebrate Mass from time to time for the benefit of Catholics living there. Father Francis Clark accepted the invitation and with only a kitchen table to serve 3s an altar for holding vestments of the church, ha performed Mass. People came from all over towm, some having to leave their place of residence befare dawn to arrive on time for Mass, Amazing but true - services in the home known as a “Mass-house’ lasted for nearly 60 years, The membership mached an amazing 110 in the 1920's, A majority of the members were Polish farmers desiring a place of thei awn to worship in their native tongue. A Polish Conventional Franciscan Priest named Father Stephan Musielak arrived to convince the area's Polish Cathalics they needed a place of their awn to canduct worship services, To consolidate this congregation, he started offering Mass al the Nagel home at 80 Nagel Hill Road, between Catatonk and Owego. There was some disagreement 35 to whare to build a new church. Seme wanted it to be located in Candor, some in Owego, and others in Newark Valley. Soan a compromise location in Catatonk was agreed upon and. in 1930 construction began, Due to limited finances, most ofthe labor and materiats were donated. Not only was it instrumental in maintaining the financial stability for the local church, but also helped in fostering good relationships with the general public. Many locals attended this church and have since gone on to their reward. Unfortunately, just a few short years ago, the church was closed and parishioners transferred to other churches. According to his brother, Floyd, Wileox had turned down a considerable sum of money from a leading national magazine far the publication rights to his story ~ this in spite of Gary not being especially affluent. He also refused payments for lectures of his experience, He graciously consented to psychiatric study and freely gave permission for publication of this story in a scientific journal with the understanding that his current address would not be revealed. NOVEMBER 2016 THE MOoNLIGHTER: 20 CAVST NATION Indigecous People ofthe land who never became citizens Taking from the Animal World The fur trade in itself aletad the relationship of Indian peoples. to the natural world. The change was not so simple as an abandonment of old beliefs, In the 18* and earty 19° centuries, beaver was much diminished over all of North America. Sea otters virtually disappeared from the Pacific Coast. The range of bison dramatically decreased. White-tailed deer almost disappeared from southeastem forests. Indian peoples were: not responsible for all of this decline, but 2s hunters in the fur trade, they were implicated in much of i. They were implicated not because they abandoned their old values, but bacause they retained them. These values no longer produced the results they once had. The fur trade demanded that indians kill animals for their fur and hides. Indians were already hunters accustomed to killing — the fact of kiling was not new, They took this killing quite seriously. The death af an animal was not a small thing. They understood the necessity to kil in particular ways. Indian beliefs and customs with respect to animals varied enormously across North America in the 16° century, but there were common patiems. Virwually all Indian peoples regarded animals not as some subordinate order of beings put at the service of humans, but as other-than-human persons, with whom human beings established relationships. To capture the essence of this older world, & Nomlaki Indian of California said, “Everything in this world communicates, just as we are naw ~ the trees, rocks, everything. But we cannot understand them, just as the white people do not understand Indians.” The profound nature of Indian identification with the animats and plants of their world was fundamental to their whole view of life, Animals could and did communicate. Indians mada hunting holy, given instructions on the nules and rituals necessary 10 kill he animal. Prayer, pleading, and reverence were as necessary fo the hunt as a bullet, arrow, or spear. Only rarely and relatively late did Indians see the fur trade as a cause in the depletion of game, They believed that folowing the proper rituals would guarantee the animals return. The white man, not having these beliefs, also continued to kill, bringing many animals to the brink of extinction. In 1807, The Trout, an Ottawa holy man, conveyed to the Indians of the region a message from the Great Spirit: ‘You complain that the animais of the forest are few and ‘Scattered. How should it be otherwise? You destroy them yourselves for their skins only and leave their bodies {0 rot or give the best pieces to the Whites. ! am displeased when I ‘sae this, and take them back fo the Earth that they may not ‘come to-you again.
