Programme Proposal - Documentary

Director

Charlie Livesey

Date

1/11/2016

Programme
Subject
Provisional Title

Dog Pregnancy
A Dogs Life

Rationale
Target audience:
Age
Gender
Lifestyle Grouping
Social Class

What research did you do:

To help you understand
the subject area and
identify narrative
opportunities

The age of my target audience is going to be around

25+ this is because it will be made specifically for
adults even though there will not be any gruesome
scenes shot during the documentary however the
language used and the topic of dog pregnancy itself
will only be intriguing to adults as young children
would rather watch cartoons than watch a factual
documentary especially on a subject of birth. My
gender is going to be both genders as both can like
dogs and it is not classed down to one gender liking
them and one not however females might be more
interested to watch it as they can actually give birth
themselves and they might be interested to see
what the process is like for dogs more than men.
The social class and lifestyle grouping also doesnt
matter as anyone can have a dog, even if your rich
or homeless.
The overall message is to see the struggles and the
good times of a dogs pregnancy but its really to try
and get the public to see what people who breed
dogs for a living are doing to these animals.
It will say how people see dogs and how dogs are
treated by people but it will also touch on peoples
relationships with dogs and how far that stretches.
Also it will touch on all the different situations that a
dog pregnancy can have and what situations the
dog in the documentary Taylor went through
personally
Around 5 to 10 minutes
The program will be shown on the television as that
will probably be where most people will go to watch
it from the ages 25+ however I will also put it on the
internet also since there will be some people
interested on there as well since the internets
popularity is growing at a fast rate
I did a lot of research on the internet on the different
stages of dog pregnancy and I also asked around at
a local vet just some specifics I also have first hand
accounts of what people have seen when witnessing
a dogs pregnancy

Constraints:

There won't be much legal constraints on this as

Overall theme:
What is the basic
underlying message.
What does it need to say
about:
People
Situations
The world we live in
How long will it last:
How will the programme be
seen:
On television
On the internet
On DVD

Legal
Ethical
Representation

the music I will be using will be free to the public

and all of the actors will have signed forms to be in
the documentary. They will all want to be
represented in a good light. There will be no bad
ethical problems as the only thing I could think of
would be showing the pregnancy itself and that will
not be shown

The first part of the story will be me going to the

house where the dogs are,
Then it will be me meeting the dogs and an
interview with the owner
The owner will give the good and bad side of the
story bad side first
Then we will go on a walk with the dogs up
dovestones and give statistics through a voice over
Then some one on one time with the dogs
Locations will be owners house and various others
around audenshaw to get some shots of the journey
there. Another location will me dovestones where
the dogs will walk this is a hilly area
The narrative will be linear and singular however the
narrative will have some closure and some open
narrative to it as the story of the pregnancy of the
pups lives is just beginning
My documentary is going to be a mix of fly on the
wall and reality as its about a serious topic which is
the dog pregnancy but will also document the lives
of the mother and the pups.

The tone will be a mixture of serious and light

hearted this is because I want to show the good and
bad side of dog pregnancy and the two sides will
need different tones to them
The narration will be a participant commentary

The pace of mine will be fast as thats how the lives

of dogs are but I also want to include some time
lapses and this will also give it a fast feel
Some of the shots will be used by a tripod and some
will be handheld as to give a sense that you are
actually there. I will use various different types of
camera angles so mid shots close ups but the main

focus will be closeups and also some timelapses.

The look of the documentary will be in high

resolution with lots of color it will be filmed on
location not in a studio and there will be some found
footage and montages with timelapses as well.

The lighting I will use will be the light that is

available at the time. This is simply due to I dont
have the lighting available to pull off mood light
The sounds used will be background music for the
montages and some music so not to keep the
interview looking bland, there will also be a voice
over and maybe some sound effects used if needed
when editing
The majority of the scenes will be straight cuts but I
would like to experiment with different transitions in
editing also at the end there might be a fade away.
