Project Introduction and Purpose Paper
Orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities in the teeth and jaws with the use of braces,
retainers, and other instruments. Without these instruments, straightening teeth becomes nearly
impossible. There are many different types of braces and retainers used in the orthodontics
industry today, but the one I would like to focus on is known as the Essex retainer. Since the
beginning of this ISM class, orthodontics has been my field of interest. I am driven by challenges
and helping others. I enjoy making people happy by making them healthier and boosting their
self-esteem. Orthodontics is a career field that provides me with these opportunities. I have seen
the miracle work of braces and retainers, but patients do not realize that even after undergoing
their treatment of braces, the teeth will still move. If they do not wear the retainer as instructed,
the teeth will shift, and they will lose their million dollar smile. Because of this, I grew interested
in learning the process of making an Essex retainer so I can better understand its importance and
function.
My internship with Bailey Orthodontics has solidified my interest in dentistry as a chosen
career field. Through my involvement with the practice and interactions with my mentor, I have
gained a better understanding of the educational requirements that are necessary for admission to
dental school. It is clear that a degree in biomedical sciences will be beneficial for preparing me
to pass the DAT. My goal this semester focuses on a better understanding of the specific
instruments and appliances used in the treatment of orthodontic patients. This will include a
better understanding of the type of braces utilized, why and how particular instruments end up
selected, how they are constructed, and the comparative advantages and disadvantages of each.

With my mentor I will identify the key appliances used within her practice, including the
variations between the types of braces provided, rubber bands, wires, retainers, forsus, herbst, lip
bumpers, bonds, and spacers. I will research each item and clearly define its design, purpose, and
function. I will then learn the step-by-step process for creating an Essex retainer. I have chosen
an Essex retainer as my product because of its often use in the aftercare of orthodontic treatment
to maintain the position of the teeth. After completing this project I hope to gain better
understanding and familiarity with the technological devices used in orthodontic treatment and
gain the knowledge to educate others.
