Shielding Gas
Argon and helium first used for gas metal arc
Argon used more than helium on ferrous metals to
keep spatter at minimum
Also heavier than air so good weld coverage
Shielding Gas
Helium added to argon to increase penetration
Hydrogen and nitrogen used for only limited
number of special applications
Carbon dioxide has following advantages:
Low cost
High density, resulting in low flow rates
ER - 70S - 6
Chemical Composition
6 = high silicon
Electrode
Solid Electrode
Minimum ultimate tensile
strength of the weld metal
Umumnya dioperasikan
menggunakan voltase yang
rendah dengan diameter
elektroda yang kecil.
PROGRAM STUDI TEKNIK DESAIN DAN KONSTRUKSI KAPAL - PPNS
Perkapalan
Dapat digunakan untuk mengelas material yang tebal hingga 1 inch
Dapat mengelas di luar workshop dengan menggunakan flux cored
welding wire
Electrode Extension
Length of filler wire that extends pas contact tube, also
called the stickout
Area where preheating of filler wire occurs
Controls dimensions of weld bead since length of extension
affect burnoff rate
Stickout distance may vary from 1/8 to 1 1/4
As electrode extension increased, preheating of wire
increases, thus less welding current required from power
source at a given feed rate
Penetration Comparisons
Wire-Feed Speed
Fixed relationship between rate of filler wire burn off and
welding current
Electrode wire-feed speed determines welding current
Decrease in speed results in less electrode being melted
